Chapter 16—The Child They Feared

1330 Words
Selena read the transcript three times. Then a fourth. Then a fifth. Each time the words felt worse. If Selena finds out about the baby, everything is ruined. The sentence haunted her. Because she couldn't stop thinking about one question. What baby? She sat alone in her office long after everyone had gone home. The city lights glowed beyond the floor-to-ceiling windows. Usually the view calmed her. Tonight it did nothing. Her thoughts were a mess. The recording had changed everything. For years she had believed one simple truth. Adrian left her. Now she wasn't sure of anything anymore. A knock interrupted her thoughts. She already knew who it was. "Come in." The door opened. Adrian stepped inside. His expression looked just as terrible as she felt. Neither greeted the other. There was no point. The recording was all that mattered. "You look exhausted," he said quietly. Selena laughed without humor. "So do you." For a moment they simply stared at one another. Years ago that silence would have been uncomfortable. Now it felt strangely natural. Both were carrying the same burden. The same questions. The same fear. Adrian finally sat across from her. "What do you think the recording meant?" Selena shook her head. "I don't know." The answer frustrated her. Because she hated uncertainty. Hated feeling blind. Especially when Aria was involved. The thought of her daughter immediately tightened her chest. A baby. A hidden baby. A secret worth destroying lives over. She suddenly felt cold. "What if it was Aria?" The words slipped out before she could stop them. Adrian froze. The room became silent. Because both of them had already considered that possibility. Neither had wanted to say it aloud. Until now. "She wasn't born yet." Selena nodded. "I know." Her voice trembled slightly. "That's exactly what scares me." Adrian stared at her. Then realization slowly crossed his face. "You think someone knew." Selena swallowed. "Maybe." Neither spoke. The possibility was horrifying. If someone had known about Aria before she was born... Then this wasn't about the wedding. It wasn't about Cassandra. It wasn't even about Selena. It was about her child. And suddenly every threat made far more sense. The next morning Adrian called Marcus before sunrise. Marcus sounded half asleep. "Tell me you found something." "Actually..." The hesitation immediately got Adrian's attention. "What?" Marcus sighed. "I found something strange." Adrian sat upright. "What kind of strange?" "The inheritance documents." For several seconds Adrian didn't understand. Then he frowned. "What inheritance documents?" "The Vale family trust." Adrian's confusion deepened. "My grandfather's trust?" "Yes." Now Marcus had Adrian's full attention. The Vale family trust controlled billions. Properties. Investments. Companies. Most heirs never saw the complete document. Only the lawyers did. "What about it?" Marcus was silent for a moment. As though deciding how much to reveal. Then: "There were amendments made shortly before your wedding." Adrian's heartbeat quickened. "By who?" "Your grandfather." That surprised him. His grandfather had died six months after the wedding. The old man had been stubborn. Brilliant. And notoriously secretive. "What kind of amendments?" Marcus exhaled. "I'd rather show you." Two hours later Adrian was sitting inside the offices of one of the city's oldest law firms. Marcus stood beside him. Several thick files rested on the table. The senior attorney looked uncomfortable. Very uncomfortable. Adrian immediately noticed. "What's wrong?" The attorney cleared his throat. "These documents were sealed." "Clearly not anymore." The lawyer glanced at Marcus. Then opened one file. Inside were dozens of legal papers. Trust records. Asset reports. Inheritance agreements. Most looked routine. Then Adrian saw a date. One week before his wedding. His pulse accelerated. The attorney pointed toward a section. "Your grandfather made substantial changes." Adrian scanned the page. His confusion deepened. Then his eyes widened. A new beneficiary. Unnamed. Unidentified. Protected under confidentiality clauses. "What is this?" The lawyer looked uneasy. "We were instructed not to disclose the identity." Adrian's patience snapped. "My family's trust is under attack." The lawyer flinched. "Who is it?" The attorney slowly opened another file. Then stopped. His face lost color. Marcus noticed immediately. "So did Adrian." "What?" The lawyer swallowed hard. "There should be another page." The room went silent. "What do you mean?" "The page is missing." By noon Adrian was furious. Missing pages. Hidden beneficiaries. Secret amendments. The deeper they dug, the worse everything became. Someone had been burying evidence for years. And whoever it was had access to powerful people. Powerful enough to manipulate legal records. As he left the law office, his phone rang. Selena. He answered immediately. "What happened?" Her voice sounded strained. "Can you meet me?" Adrian's stomach tightened. "Why?" A pause. Then: "I found something." Thirty minutes later Adrian arrived at Selena's office. She looked pale. More shaken than he had seen her in years. Even during the school incident. Even after the threats. This was different. Fear. Real fear. She handed him a folder. "Look." Adrian opened it. Inside were medical records. Old ones. Five years old. His pulse accelerated. "Where did you get these?" "My former doctor." The answer confused him. "What am I looking at?" Selena pointed to a date. The week before the wedding. Adrian frowned. Then realization hit. Pregnancy records. Selena's pregnancy records. His heart nearly stopped. Because there, highlighted in yellow, was a note. Patient advised to exercise caution due to potential external stressors. Adrian frowned. "What does that mean?" Selena handed him another page. His stomach dropped. A report. Someone had accessed her medical file. Repeatedly. Without authorization. Before the wedding. After the wedding. Even after she disappeared. The room suddenly felt too small. "Who?" Selena's eyes filled with anger. "I don't know." The answer terrified both of them. Because it meant someone had known. Someone had been watching. Even before Aria was born. That night neither slept. Adrian sat in his penthouse staring at the city. The recording played repeatedly in his mind. The baby. The trust. The medical records. None of it made sense separately. But together? Together they formed a pattern. One he couldn't quite see yet. His phone buzzed. Marcus. Again. "What now?" Marcus sounded breathless. Like he had been running. "I found the missing page." Adrian shot upright. "What?" "The trust document." His heart began pounding. "Where?" "Someone archived it incorrectly." Adrian didn't care how. Only that they had it. "Send it." Seconds later an email arrived. Adrian opened it immediately. The document looked ordinary. Legal language. Financial clauses. Inheritance conditions. Then he reached the final section. And froze. For several seconds he simply stared. Unable to process what he was reading. Because suddenly everything made sense. And nothing made sense. His grandfather had created a separate trust. One worth hundreds of millions. A trust protected by extraordinary conditions. A trust created specifically for one person. One future heir. One child. The child's name wasn't listed. Only initials. At least initially. Then Adrian reached the final page. The page added years later. His blood ran cold. A handwritten amendment. Signed. Witnessed. Legal. Valid. And attached beneath it A name. A single name. Adrian's hands began shaking. Impossible. Absolutely impossible. His grandfather died before Aria was born. So how could her name be there? How could anyone know? The phone slipped slightly in his grasp. Across town, Selena's phone rang at the exact same moment. She answered immediately. "Adrian?" His voice sounded strange. Almost shocked. Almost frightened. "Selena." Her stomach tightened. "What happened?" Several seconds passed. Then Adrian finally spoke. And the words changed everything. "You need to see this." "What is it?" More silence. Then: "Your daughter's name." Selena froze. Every instinct screamed danger. "What about her name?" Adrian looked down at the document again. Still unable to believe what he was seeing. Then he whispered the words. "Aria's name appears in a secret Vale family trust document." And for the first time, both of them realized something terrifying. Someone had been planning for Aria long before she was ever born.
