Chapter 11: Somebody But Not Everybody
It’s the Org Fair day on our school and I didn’t expect that the whole school administration would support it by giving us a half-day of classes though it is only intended for only us freshmen. They said that this is the day for us to choose our Organization so that it could help us adjust faster in the collegiate environment. Of course, for me, I wouldn’t like the idea of getting involved on such things but this is a compulsory social activity. If there is an organization dedicated about anti-socialism, then count me in! Maybe it’s called Anti-Social Society, then it will be called Anti-soc soc in short. Well it’s not absurd. I’ve seen a lot of weird organization (and names) as I stroll by each booth set out on our Activity Field. There’s an org exclusive for Psych majors like me. There’s a K-Pop dedicated org, also. Actually, I’m considering them.
Oh, I’ve seen also an org for Japanese lovers, which instantaneously made me remember Nikolas. I thought he was the President but I only saw a bunch of geeks of anime and manga or Otaku or whatever. I’m quite impressed by their dedication as some even dressed up like the anime. One that striked out is a guy who has pink hair, fake of course, and wears only a vest for tops revealing his good-looking abs and constantly shouting “Oi Happy!” and laughing. He’s both hot and not at the same time. And then I imagined Nikolas dressed as him.
“Hey miss, are you interested on our org?”
“Huh?” I turned around.
“You’re standing on our booth for like a minute,”
“Jasper! This is your org?”
“Yeah, so are you interested?”
“Am now,” I mumbled.
“What?”
“Nothing,” my heart fluttered. I feel so nervous when I’m talking to Jasper. It’s like I’m talking to the supervisor of something and if I say something wrong I’ll be condemned. “So, what is your org about?” wait, did I say it right?
“Our org is called Volunteer Society. We usually create events like gift-giving, medical mission,”
“Medical Mission? Wow,”
“Yeah. You know it feels nice to see someone smile because of what you did. It’s amazing,”
“Yeah?”
“Yeah,” Jasper showed his crooked smile and it literally made sense to me what he had just said. I feel nice inside.
“So what’s your org short for?”
“It’s VolSoc,”
“Excuse me?” I asked to check if what I heard is right.
“VolSoc,”
I did hear it right! I tried to cover my mouth but my laugh bursted out.
“Why are you laughing?” What is it? Did I say something funny?” Then I started to laugh even more! I thought he was joking but to know that he wasn’t, made it more funnier.
“Could you say it again? The name of your org?”
“VolSoc?” I laughed again until my tummy hurts. “What’s funny about-oh-”
“Oh what?”
“No!”
“Oh yes!”
“Elois, you naughty girl!”
“Naughty? You’re the one who’s thinking about it!”
“I thought you were pure and innocent. Man!”
I stopped laughing. “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t made fun of your org’s name.”
“Yeah, you should be ashamed of yourself!” he joked. “It’s not even close to,”
“I know,”
“So you’re interested?”
“I don’t know. VolSoc sounds so manly to me. Like I need to have balls to do it,” I squinted at while I say it then I laughed again. This time, Jasper is laughing with me.
“Come on you gotta try,” Jasper placed his hand on to my shoulder. Not that I’m cool with him holding my shoulder but hey he’s holding my shoulder! “We’re having a volunteer project where we’re going to teach kids on the nearby orphanage. Tomorrow, we’ll have a meeting and we’ll be prepping up all the things that we need like art materials and bunch of other stuff. So are you game?”
Tomorrow. Just like what the crazy Nikolas told me, when the flash flood would occur, me and Jasper were together. Is this it? Is this how it would happen? Nikolas is really from the future? No. “No, I don’t think I’m good for tomorrow.” I relayed Jasper the “unfortunate” news.
“Why? Are you busy tomorrow?”
“Well not exactly,”
“Then what’s hindering you?”
“Bad weather I guess, and I have a class”
“Bad weather? Look at the sky Elois, it’s very sunny.” I did stare at the sky. Unlike the past two days, the sky is clean with no clouds at all. “And don’t worry. Your classes won’t be interrupted. You can join me on my team. We’ll be the ones who would be buying treats for the kids and we’ll do it by 5 so technically all of us don’t have classes anymore.”
“I don’t know,” I still hesitated. The fact that I’ll be joining Jasper’s team would spike Nikolas’s prediction made me doubtful.
“Okay, Elois. Our org’s name is Volunteer Society after all. Volunteer means free-will,” I could sense a tone of disappointment from his voice. And not only that, he also removed his hand from my shoulder.
“No, Jasper, please don’t think that I don’t want to volunteer,”
“Then why can’t you come?”
Why can’t I come? Because I’m avoiding a prediction of a person who I think has loose screws? If I can’t come then I might as well have believed him. But if I did come, then I’m skewing the probability of Nikolas’s prediction up. Either way, volunteer or not, Nikolas’s prediction should pass to the assumption that there would be flash flood and I would be with Jasper.
“Is Leslie going to be there?” I asked. If Leslie is with us, then Nikolas’s prediction would be wrong. He didn’t say that me, Jasper and Leslie were together.
“Do you want her to be there?”
I nodded.
“Okay. I’m going to call her and if she agrees to go, would you come?”
“Yes, I promise.”
Jasper took out his phone and walked away a little from me. I get it that he wanted his call to be private but his voice is too loud for me not to overhear it. “Come on lil’ sis. For your sweet and handsome brother,” he said. I stifled my laugh so he won’t be uncomfortable. “Oh you will? You’re the best!”
“So how’d it go?” I pretended not to have any idea.
“She said yes!” he answered excitedly. “That means I’m going to see you there, huh?”
“I guess you would,”
“Trust me, you won’t regret attending our event,”
“May I ask though why you’re having an activity early on the semester?”
“Well this activity is really for potential recruits for our Organization. This is how we orient them on the work-load and the experience we can offer to them,”
“How about Cole? Is he part of this Organization?” I asked out of the blue.
“Cole? You wish. That dude doesn’t even have a heart,”
“Doesn’t have a heart?”
“Nah, I’m just kidding. Or not. Cole is complicated you know.”
“You’re only telling me now?” I joked.
“I don’t even think he’s capable of love.”
“Come on, everybody can love,”
“But Cole does not belong to the everybody. He is somebody but will not belong with everybody, He’s not your average guy,” I felt my chest tightened a little bit. “Hey cheer up. Cole has the best roommate in the world, remember? He’s complicated but comprehensible” Jasper must have felt my emotions.
“So tomorrow?” I assured.
“Yeah, tomorrow. See you by 5?”
I gave him another nod and then I walked away. When I looked back, I saw him doing some dance which made me giggle once more.
On my way home, I didn’t expect the person that me and Jasper just talked about- Cole. He was wearing a sweatshirt even though the weather is sunny and the temperature is above the comfortable room temp. If I would assume what he said to me last night, then this Cole is the “present Cole” not the “future Nikolas”. Which means I have no reason to talk to him. That’s why I was surprised when he called out my name.
“Elois!” he repeated this time more intentful.
“What is it?”
“It’s me Nikolas.”
“Yeah, I know.” I lied. I’m kinda confused.
“You remember last night?”
“I think it’s best for you if I don’t.”
“Elois, I’m serious.”
“I thought you’re not Cole of the present when it’s morning,” following this line of reasoning made me only suspicious that he’s just playing a prank last night or he’s just out of his mind.
“That’s not completely true. I could only travel back in time if the present Cole is asleep, remember?” he say the word ‘remember’ as if he had explained it to me a thousand times and I should have gotten it already.
“Cole please, not this again. Tomorrow, okay? I’ll talk to you if what you predicted comes true,”
“If it’s not?”
“I don’t know, Cole. You can maybe seek help from professionals,”
Cole closed his eyes then talked. “I’ll add more definitive proof to make you believe, okay?”
“Definitive proof?”
“Tomorrow’s winning lotto number,” My eyes widened. He’s really betting on this one. “That means, the odds of getting the winning number is 1 in 8,145,060 or 0.0000122773804%. If I’ll give you those numbers would you believe me?”
“Yeah, I guess so. You know, there’s a higher chance that I’ll be hit by a lightning than having your prediction true.”
“Correct. So that way, you’ll be sure enough to find me. One condition again though,”
“What?”
“You cannot buy a lotto and win this yourself. You’ll change the future and that would be drastically terrible.”
“Yeah sure of course,” I acquiesced. On second thought what if he’s right?
“Okay the winning numbers are 02-18-08-24-30-45,” Cole recited as I jot down each number on my notebook. These are the winning numbers. I laughed a little on my head thinking that Cole had really lost it. But also, I want to admit, I’m excited to know if these numbers are his winning numbers to make me believe at his impossible declarations.
