Chapter 28 - You Lost her
****Ryder’s POV****
As we’re leaving Alpha Blakes’ office, I mind-link Amber letting her know I’ll meet her upstairs in a second. Tapping Jessica on the shoulder, I signal her to follow me.
“Hey, I have a question for you.” I watch as you arches a perfectly tweezed eyebrow at me. D*mn, she really does have as much sass as Amber.
“What’s up?” I awkwardly ask while scratching the back of my neck.
“I’m not sure if it’s the same in lycan packs, but I’m pretty sure you know that in werewolf packs, the gamma protects the luna with their life for their entire life.” She nods her head in understanding. “Well, you’ve done so much for not only the pack but for Amber even before we told you everything. Would you be my gamma when I take my position as Alpha? I know you’re someone I can trust to keep her safe, and that won’t betray mine or her trust.” Why am I so shy right now?
“Probably because you’re asking her sister to play a major role without knowing if she’s willing.” My wolf says this as if it’s a fact.
“Wow, I wasn’t expecting you to ask me that. I would be honored to be your gamma.” I was shocked to see she didn’t have a mischievous look in her eyes. “Now, if you don’t need me anymore, I’ll be heading to my adoptive mom’s house.” After saying that, she turned around and walked away. I took a deep breath and tried to ready myself for this conversation with Amber.
***Jessica’s POV***
I’ve been texting and calling my adoptive mom, Rebecca, but she’s not answering. Something in my head has my lycan pacing back and forth. Upon reaching my house, I get this uneasy feeling. I paused briefly and scanned the area, but everything appeared calm.
“Is it me, or is it a little too calm right now?” My lycan sounded uneasy, and I could tell her she felt conflicted, which could mean two things. One, she’s being dramatic. Two, someone used a charm of some form that’ll calm my human side.
“You, of all people, should know I’m not dramatic. You just don’t take sh*t seriously.” She scoffed at me. I swear she can be so sassy sometimes, and I think that’s one of the many things I love about her. I opened the door, and before I could walk through the door, I was hit with this rotten smell of decay. It took everything in me not to throw up right there. A glass break scream escaped me once my eyes landed on the decapitated head of my mom. I stood there frozen, unable to avert my eyes from her head. I noticed something on the wall.
“I didn’t say you could tell anyone. Your poor mother had to pay for your stupidity.” This message was written in her blood. What type of sick bastard does this to an innocent person?! I pulled out my phone, trying not to drop it because my hands were shaking so much. I decided to FaceTime Amber since I don’t trust my voice. Much to my relief, she answered on the third ring.
“Hey, girl wh- Jess, what’s wrong? Her voice was laced with worry, and as soon as I heard her, I started sobbing my eyes out. I flipped the camera to show her what I walked in on. She dropped the phone, and I could hear her running, followed by the sound of her throwing up. Ryder picks up the phone, and I see his face hardened.
“Can you tell how long she’s been dead?” I wanted to scream for asking me that so soon, but I knew he was in Alpha mode, which meant no time for grieving. Sniffling a few times and wiping my eyes, I could take the time to look at her.
“Um, I would say it's not too recent since there are two or three maggots around, and it smells like someone set sh*t on fire in here.” I couldn’t think of how to describe how awful it smelt. Soon Amber takes the phone, and she has tears in her eyes. Rebecca treated her like she was another daughter.
“Who could have done this?!” She screamed this. The pain and agony were evident in her voice. More tears began to flow freely down her face.
“I did it.” A masked figure appears behind her and hits her over the head, rendering her unconscious. “If you don’t want your sister to end up like Rebecca on the next full moon, come to the woods behind your high school gym. You better come alone, or I won’t hesitate on chopping her head off too.” Before I could say anything, the call ended. I screamed so loud I didn’t hear the glass shattering. I felt something powerful stirring inside me. My body felt like it was vibrating. A feral growl tore through me as my breathing grew heavy.
“Amber, calm down. That person wants you to get mad and act without thinking.” His voice sounded like it was far away from me.
***Ryder’s POV***
“Amber, calm down. That person wants you to get mad and act without thinking.” I was trying to calm her down, partially because she doesn’t make good decisions when she’s mad and because she was sort of scaring me.
“Awe, is the big bad alpha scared of his itty bitty mate?” I swear my wolf picks the worse moments to be an a*s. In my mind, I see Jake stretching before shaking out his fur.
“F*ck you too, but I hate to break it to you, buddy. That wasn’t me.” If wolves could smirk, I know he would be.
“It was me that said that.” Slowly I turned around and saw
Amber still standing there. Her eyes opened as if she was acting out a horror movie scene. I was expecting her caramel doe eyes but was met with piercing red eyes. It’s her lycan!
"I'm sorry, my name is Alex, and I'm her lycan. I'm not staying for long because it's not time for me to emerge. Please understand this, whoever took Jessica will have to deal with me. When I say me, I mean lycan me because I don't play about my family. It doesn't matter who it is. Anyone can catch these claws, and that goes for man, woman, and child."
