Hazel’s pov
I could only nod, unable to find my voice. Willow guided me away from the crowd, her arm never leaving mine. It was as though she was afraid I might collapse if she let go. She led me through the forest, the sounds of the pack fading into the background as we went deeper into the trees.
"This can’t be real, right?" I asked her in a whisper, my voice filled with emotion. "How could he do this to me, Willow? I thought he loved me…"
Willow’s grip tightened on my arm as we walked. "I know, Hazel. I know how much this hurts. But I believe that we can fix this. I’ll talk to him, and convince him to reconsider. He’s just… overwhelmed right now."
I looked at her, hope flickering weakly in my chest. "You really think he’ll change his mind?"
"Of course," Willow said firmly, her expression determined. "You two have been together for so long. He’s just scared of the new responsibility, but once I talk to him, he’ll realize what a mistake he has made."
I nodded, trying to hang onto that small spark of hope. "Okay… okay. What do we do?"
Willow smiled, that familiar, reassuring smile that had comforted me through so many tough times. "Come with me to the old clearing. It’s quiet there. I’ll send for Jack, and we can talk this out, just the three of us."
I had some doubt, the ache in my chest making it hard to think clearly. But Willow’s voice was so soothing, so convincing. She was my best friend, if anyone could help me, it was her.
"Alright," I agreed, my voice barely above a whisper. "Let’s go."
We continued through the forest, the trees closing in around us as we made our way to the clearing. The air was thick with the scent of pine and earth, the moonlight filtering through the canopy in silvery streams.
I followed Willow silently, my heart heavy with grief, yet holding on to the hope that maybe, just maybe, things could be fixed.
We arrived at the clearing, a small, secluded spot deep within the forest. The moonlight bathed the area in a pale glow, casting long shadows across the ground. I glanced around, the quietness of the place unsettling.
"Willow… are you sure about this?" I asked, a hint of doubt creeping into my voice.
Willow turned to me, her smile still in place, but something in her eyes had changed. Before I could process it, I heard movement behind me. I spun around, my instincts flaring, but it was too late.
A group of men stepped out from the shadows, their faces obscured by the darkness, but I could see the glint of weapons in their hands. Panic surged through me, and I turned back to Willow, only to find her expression had turned cold, calculating.
"Wil..Willow… what’s going on?" I stammered, my heart racing as I took a step back.
Her smile twisted into something cruel, something I’d never seen before.
"Oh, Hazel, you really are too stupid for your own good," she spat, her voice dripping with disdain. "You actually believed I’d help you? That Jack would reconsider? You’re even more pathetic than I had imagined."
The blood drained from my face as the reality of the situation crashed down on me. This wasn’t a misunderstanding. This was a trap, a carefully laid trap by the two people I trusted most.
"No…" I whispered, shaking my head in disbelief. "No, this can’t be… Willow, why? Why are you doing this?"
She laughed, the sound sharp and mocking. "Because, Hazel, I’m tired of living in your shadow. Tired of being the ‘best friend’ while you get everything handed to you. The Alpha position, the respect, the love of the pack… and Jack. But not anymore. Jack is mine now, and so is everything else."
I could feel my heart being ripped from my chest. I stumbled back, but the men behind me blocked my path, their presence looming over me like a dark cloud. "Please, Willow," I begged, tears streaming down my face. "We’ve been through so much together. Don’t do …"
But Willow’s eyes were cold, devoid of any warmth or compassion. "Hazel, you’re nothing now. Just a broken Alpha with no power and no mate. You’re useless to everyone, including yourself."
She stepped closer, her face twisted with a cruel smile. "And now, you’re going to die out here, alone, forgotten. While I take everything that should have been mine."
The men closed in, their weapons gleaming in the moonlight. I fought against the rising panic, my mind racing for a way out, but I was surrounded. Betrayed, outnumbered, and powerless.
As they advanced, I could see the satisfaction in Willow’s eyes, the triumph as she watched me fall. The betrayal cut deeper than any blade ever could. I had lost everything. My pack, my position, my mate and now, I was about to lose my life at the hands of the person I thought was my friend
‘You can’t die like this Hazel,’ Mia, my wolf told me. ‘We can take them on. Let me out.’
A growl of pure agony and rage tore from my throat as they lunged at me, but then I felt my wolf coming out to defend me. I changed into a beautiful white wolf in the blink of an eye and struck one of the men with my claws, ripping his throat. He fell with a scream and the others became scared.
“Don’t tell me, you can’t handle one she-wolf. Come on, kill her.” Willow screamed at the men.
They came at me together, hitting me with their weapon and I fought back with every ounce of strength I had left. But it wasn’t enough. I was overwhelmed, my body weakening with every blow, and soon the world around me faded into a blur of pain and despair.
The last thing I saw before darkness claimed me was Willow’s face, her cruel smile seared into my memory as the world slipped away. I changed back into my human form as I lay there dying.
