Chapter 4

The plane touched down in Shanghai, the city’s skyline glittering under the night sky. Lily stepped off the plane, her heart pounding with a mix of anticipation and dread. She was no longer the naive woman who had trusted Ethan and Margaret blindly. She was Jessica Xu now, a woman with a mission—to reclaim her life and expose the truth. Alexander Shen waited for her at the airport, his tall frame standing out among the crowd. He nodded at her as she approached, his expression unreadable. “Are you ready?” he asked, his voice calm but firm. Lily nodded, her resolve hardening. “I’m ready.” They drove through the bustling streets of Shanghai, the city’s energy a stark contrast to the storm brewing inside Lily. She stared out the window, her mind racing with plans and possibilities. She had to be careful, strategic. One wrong move, and everything could fall apart. “Ethan and Margaret are hosting a charity gala tonight,” Alexander said, breaking the silence. “It’s the perfect opportunity to make your move.” Lily’s stomach churned at the thought of facing them again, but she pushed the fear aside. “What’s the plan?” Alexander handed her a folder. “You’ll attend as my guest. I’ve arranged for you to wear a disguise—just enough to keep them guessing. The goal is to plant doubt in their minds, to make them question whether you’re really dead.” Lily flipped through the folder, her eyes scanning the details. The gala was being held at the Grand Shanghai Hotel, one of the most prestigious venues in the city. Ethan and Margaret would be there, along with the city’s elite. It was the perfect stage for her return. “And then what?” Lily asked, her voice steady. Alexander’s lips curved into a faint smile. “Then we watch them unravel.” The Grand Shanghai Hotel was a vision of opulence, its grand ballroom filled with the city’s most influential people. Crystal chandeliers sparkled overhead, and the sound of laughter and clinking glasses filled the air. Lily stood at the entrance, her heart pounding as she adjusted the delicate mask that covered half her face. The disguise was subtle but effective—enough to make her unrecognizable at first glance. Alexander offered her his arm, and she took it, her grip firm. “Remember,” he whispered, “stay calm. Let them come to you.” They stepped into the ballroom, and Lily’s eyes immediately found Ethan and Margaret. They stood at the center of the room, surrounded by admirers, their smiles bright and confident. Seeing them again sent a wave of anger through her, but she forced herself to stay composed. As they moved through the crowd, Lily could feel the weight of their stares. Whispers followed them, curious and speculative. “Who is she?” someone murmured. “She looks familiar.” Lily kept her head high, her expression neutral. She was no longer the woman they had betrayed. She was someone new, someone stronger. Ethan’s eyes flickered toward her, and for a moment, their gazes locked. Lily’s breath caught in her throat, but she didn’t look away. She saw the moment recognition dawned in his eyes, the color draining from his face. Margaret noticed his reaction and followed his gaze. Her eyes widened in shock, her hand flying to her mouth. “Lily?” she whispered, her voice barely audible. Lily smiled faintly, her heart racing. The game had begun. Ethan recovered quickly, his mask of confidence slipping back into place. He excused himself from the group and made his way toward Lily, his steps deliberate. Margaret followed close behind, her face pale. “Do I know you?” Ethan asked, his voice smooth but laced with tension. Lily tilted her head, her smile enigmatic. “I don’t believe we’ve met. I’m Jessica Xu, a friend of Alexander’s.” Ethan’s eyes narrowed, his gaze searching hers. “You look… familiar.” “Do I?” Lily replied, her tone light. “I get that a lot.” Margaret stepped forward, her voice trembling. “You… you look just like someone we used to know.” Lily’s smile widened. “Is that so? I hope she was a good person.” Margaret’s face paled further, and she took a step back. Ethan placed a hand on her arm, his grip tight. “Let’s not bother our guest,” he said, his voice strained. “Enjoy the gala, Miss Xu.” Lily nodded, her smile never wavering. “Thank you. I intend to.” As they walked away, Lily could feel the tension radiating from them. She had planted the seed of doubt, and now it would grow. The rest of the evening passed in a blur. Lily mingled with the guests, her charm and poise drawing attention. She could feel Ethan and Margaret watching her from across the room, their unease palpable. Alexander stayed by her side, his presence a steadying force. “You’re doing well,” he murmured. “They’re rattled.” Lily nodded, her eyes scanning the room. “But it’s not enough. I need them to admit what they did.” “Patience,” Alexander said. “They’ll slip up. And when they do, we’ll be ready.” As the gala drew to a close, Lily felt a sense of satisfaction. She had taken the first step toward reclaiming her life, and there was no turning back. The drive back to Alexander’s penthouse was quiet, the city lights casting a soft glow over the car’s interior. Lily leaned back in her seat, her mind replaying the events of the evening. She had faced Ethan and Margaret, and she had held her ground. But the battle was far from over. “What’s next?” she asked, breaking the silence. Alexander glanced at her, his expression thoughtful. “We wait. They’ll make a move soon, and when they do, we’ll be ready.” Lily nodded, her resolve hardening. She had come too far to back down now. She would see this through, no matter what it took. As they pulled up to the penthouse, Lily felt a sense of determination settle over her. She was no longer the victim. She was the hunter, and Ethan and Margaret were her prey. The game was far from over, but Lily was ready to play.
