***Kai***
~I found myself in total darkness, standing ankle deep in a cool pool of water. Looking down I realized I was staring at my feet, not Ghost’s paws. Ghost? I tried to call to him. But I could not feel his presence. Not knowing what else to do, I started to walk.
I could hear my own footsteps splash with each step, as the water seemed to have no end, never growing in depth, nor decreasing. I traversed this dark plain for what seemed an endless amount of time, I became lost in the emptiness, but after a while something seemed to change. Off in the distance I thought I saw a blue light begin to glow. I followed it, with its intensity growing the closer I came to its origin point. Once I came upon a small island raised above the water, I found what was creating the light. Upon the island sat a massive tree with shining blue orbs hanging from its branches like fruit from a tree. This is from where the light had been emanating from. I walked up closer to it to inspect further, and touched one of the orbs. I found it to be similar in consistency to glass, yet it was warm to the touch. Yet the moment I did place my hand upon it, an image of a black wolf appeared within its walls. Suddenly I became aware of his name. Shadow. It almost seemed as if he bowed his head towards me, and then the image disappeared.
“Ah, I see you’ve met Shadow.” A melodious voice said from directly behind me. I turned to see a beautiful woman with long black hair that somehow also gave off a blue glow. She wore a long flowing blue dress that trailed behind her as she walked. Next to her was Ghost. What was he doing there? Where was I? The woman chuckled.
“Don’t worry Kai, you are safe, and so is Ghost. Do you know who I am?” I’ve read of encounters with a woman described like the one in front of me, but could it be?
“Moon goddess.”
“Ah, yes, that is the name some have mistakenly called me by, but please, just call me Selene.”
“Is that not who you are? A goddess?” I asked confused.
“Only the Creator is God, my siblings and I are but his children sent to do his will, though some have strayed over the years and let themselves be worshiped as gods. But that is not important right now. We don’t have much time and I have much to tell you. Come.” She motioned for me to follow her. We walked behind the tree and I found the island seemed to grow in size as we walked. Instead of just one tree, there were a hundred more going up a hill, and a gazebo with benches in the midst of a beautiful flower garden. We made our way over to one of the benches where Selene sat, and she motioned for me to do the same.
“Now Kai, I bet you are wondering where you are and why you are here.”
“Well, yea I am.”
“This is a realm between realms, it is where the moon's light touches the earth and disappears into the shadows. It is a place where new souls wait to go to earth to find their mates and finally be complete. It is where Ghost was before you were born, waiting for you to arrive.” Ghost walked up to her and she lovingly ran her hands through his mane. He laid his head on her lap as she continued to pet him while he purred for her. She was quiet for a bit before she looked at me.
“And I am sorry Kai, but you are about to embark on a very difficult but necessary journey. One that may see you lose the mate you just found.”
“What! What do you mean I might lose her? I just found her!” The main thing I have wanted since I was 18 was to find my mate. How could I lose her before I’ve even had a chance to enjoy her?
“It will depend on her choices. But what I need you to know is that the fate of all is at risk, and what Jane is about to go through will determine the outcome for not just the shifters, but all beings on the earth. You are going to have to be very strong Kai. She is going to need you to be by her side, you are the only one who will be able to save her, so stay close!”
“Save her? What is coming, how can I prepare? What do I need to do, please, tell me how I can save her. I don’t want to lose her so soon.” I begged Selene.
She looked at me sadly. “There is a war coming, long ago prophesied, but few still know of its words. Seek out the professor in the maze, tell him I sent you and he will help you on your path.” Selene looked to the sky, which seemed to be getting lighter by the minute. “I don’t have any more time. Kai, you have already learned of some of your heritage, the professor will know more, ask of that as well. It will be important for you to know later.” She seemed to be fading away as the light got brighter. Not only her, but the entire Island. Even the bench beneath me started to dissipate before my eyes, I stood up in shock before I fell through to the ground.
“Oh and Kai, one more thing!” She said, as not only was her image barely more than mist, but her voice seemed as if it came from far away. “8 years ago. . . she lived!” And with that she was gone, along with everything else. Only Ghost and I remained. I bent down on one knee and wrapped my arms around his giant neck and wept. She lived!~
I awoke to the morning sun shining bright in my eyes, and quickly got up from beneath Jane's window and ran for the shelter of the trees before I could be spotted. Ghost? Did you know?
“Not that she lived. I would have searched the world for her.” And then he went quite yet again. Continuing his silence with me.
I walked further into the shadows, until I came across the protection detail I had ordered Jason to send. After Giving them a command to stay with Jane wherever she went, I ran back to my pack. I had much to do, but first I wanted to talk to my dad about all of this. Maybe he would be able to shed a light on this mystery professor in the maze. Or about anything Selene said really. It was all so much to take in. But the most confusing part was if my friend that I thought was killed as a child lived, and back then I was sure she was my mate. How can Jane also be my mate? Whatever it ment, I had to find her.
