CHAPTER 5
***Kai***
It didn’t take long for me to figure out what she meant by not working well with others. I thought maybe she was a klutz, especially after this morning. However, that wasn’t it at all. She was just very aggressive when it came to playing. She was constantly coming over to me to get the ball when I easily had it, slamming into me. And she hit hard. She could probably even knock over some shifters. Lucky for her, I’m not your average shifter. I also kind of liked her slamming into me. Everytime she did I felt the sparks and wanted more.
I found myself purposely putting myself into her way so that the next time she ran into me she almost fell over. However I caught her with my arms and held on to her for a while longer, enjoying the sensation of her skin on mine. Taking in a deep breath of her delicious scent as it was so close to me. As I stared into her beautiful hazel eyes I forgot all about the game.
“Sorry, I did warn you though.” She said as I gazed at her. “Hummmm?” I questioned her, forgetting about everything but her and that she was in my arms right now.
“Earlier, I said. . . I might, I might run you into the ground.” She said as if it were a struggle to talk. Ah that’s what she is talking about. Now I remember.
“Darling, you can run into me all you want, but I’ll never let you fall.”
Slowly I stood her upright but kept my arms on her still. I felt like I could stare into her eyes for the rest of eternity. But she wouldn’t understand this bond yet, and El was right earlier when she said Jane could get scared off. Struggling to let go, I took another step away from her.
“Shall we continue?” I asked.
Nodding her head in agreement, she moved back into her own position. However now she seemed to be more aware of where I was and didn’t run into me again. Too bad, I enjoyed it. I guess I’ll have to find another way to get close again. We played the game for maybe another half an hour when suddenly I heard Jane's stomach rumble. Jeff from the other side of the net paused his serve and stared at Jane.
“Dang girl, is that your stomach?” Jeff said in incredulity. Melanie walked over and slapped Jeff over the head. “Owwwww, why do you always have to be so violent!” He said as he rubbed his head.
“Why do you always have to be such an i***t?” She shot back, rolling her eyes.
Jane’s cheeks turned a bright shade of pink in embarrassment. She covered her stomach with her arms and looked away towards the ocean. “You heard that huh.” She said, “Guess I should have had a bigger breakfast.” She forcefully laughed.
Just then Jeff's stomach growled as well, louder than Janes. He looked down at his own stomach and started to talk to it. “You betray me! Don’t you know I’m this close to kicking Alphas butt!”
Melanie's eyes bugged open wide as she grabbed Jeff by the arm and started to walk in the direction of the driftwood where El was. “I think we should call a timeout and get some lunch, what do you think Kai.” I shook my head in disappointment, I loved Jeff like a brother but sometimes he just didn’t think.
“Jeff! She won’t understand what you mean by Alpha! Cut the crap and keep our world out of it!” I yelled at him through the mind link.
“Sorry Alpha! But man, that girl is brutal! I thought I was playing against one of our warriors, not some human chick!” He had a point. She was rather strong and aggressive for a human. Even just playing volleyball. I had to wonder what she would be like in a fight.
Responding to Melanie I said “Sounds good, I could go for something too.” Looking over at Jane I asked her, “Would you like to join us? We have more than enough to share.”
“That’s okay, I brought my own.” She said.
She followed Jeff and Melanie back to the beach spot and I walked behind her. I couldn’t help myself and was in the perfect position to stare right at that lovely derriere of hers. With it slightly poking out of her bikini bottoms, I was able to notice where her tan lines were. My gaze traveled all over her body as we continued to walk over to the driftwood, and I came up with a plan. If I could just get closer to her, the mate bond should start to work and she won’t be able to stay away from me. I would love to be able to lather that sunblock all over her luscious body. But how do I get to that point? I never really had to try with a girl before. They have always just thrown themselves at me.
“Hey Jane, have you had a chance to check out Salt yet? They have some amazing dishes. Come here and take a bite of this sandwich,” El said as Jane walked over by her.
“Nah I’m good. I have something in my bag that I brought with me.” She again turned down the food.
“Seriously, come here and take a bite.” El demanded. Jane looked defeated and grudgingly walked over to El and took the sandwich from her to take a bite. I could tell by the way her face looked that she was really enjoying the food, but trying not to let it on.
“There, I took a bite, thanks.” She said as she wiped some of the food off the corner of her mouth and then ate it. Licking her finger right after, oh the things I could do with that mouth.
“And. . . .did you like it?” El asked.
“It’s fine, but I’m just going to stick with my protein bar I brought. You can keep it.” She can’t be serious. That’s all she was planning to eat?
I reached into the cooler and pulled out another two sandwiches and 2 apple cranberry juices and walked over to where Jane was digging into her bag. Standing in front of her and blocking the sun, she looked up at me.
“Yes? Can I help you?” She asked.
“Yup, you can eat this.” I put the sandwich and juice on the towel next to her. “After a workout like we had playing volleyball, you need more than just a protein bar. Please, take this. Seriously, we have more than enough.” She glared at me.
“I said I’m good. I don’t need that much.”
“What are you on some sort of diet or something?” She was perfect, she didn’t need to lose weight, if anything she could gain some.
“It’s not really any of your business if I am or not.”
“Well trust me, your body needs the fuel. So eat up.”
“Will you leave me alone if I take it?” She said irritatedly.
“I’ll stop bugging you to eat.” I sure as hell wasn’t going to leave her alone, she was mine now.
She glared at me but took the food and started to unwrap it, making a point to take a big exaggerated bite. Satisfied, I sat down on the edge of the towel next to her and started to eat my food.
“What are you doing?” She asked. Yes, I purposely sat on her towel.
I shoved a huge amount of sandwich into my mouth, prohibiting me from being able to speak. “Hummm? Mmamhhfhfffffhh.” I mumbled while pointing to my mouth.
She rolled her eyes. “Yes, it’s very cute when a grown man talks with his mouth full. Wouldn’t you be more comfortable over there?” She pointed to another spot on the driftwood that looked made for sitting. I swallowed my food and looked her dead in the eyes.
“Nah, I’m good. I think this is a great spot.” I smiled a huge grin at her, and then proceeded to re-stuff my face with food. I motioned to her that she should keep eating too, which after another glare at me, she did take another huge bite.
“So Jane, I know you were over by the outlet mall earlier this morning, were you going to go to Salt before we startled you?” Mealanie asked.
It took her a minute to swallow her food before she could answer. “Yes and no, I was thinking about checking it out, but really I had planned on doing some school shopping today. I’ll probably head back over there once we're done eating. That is if I’m allowed to?” She asked while giving El a questioning look. Noooo, that will ruin my plans! I need to find a way to keep her on the beach longer.
“Melanie, find a way to keep her with the group! I need more time!” I mind linked her. She completely ignored me and closed the link down. As her Alpha I should be mad. I could even force her to comply. But I didn’t like being that kind of a leader. I wanted my people to follow me because they respected me, not because they were forced to do so.
El looking rather embarrassed said “Yea you're good. Your head doesn’t hurt at all does it?”
“No, it only hurt for a few minutes after I hit it, but that was it really. Everything feels great now.” She says as she rubs her head. “Nope, don’t feel a thing.”
“Wait, you were going to go shopping? For supplies or clothes, please say clothes!” Melanie jumped in the conversation excitedly.
“Is she okay?” Jane asked El.
El rolled her eyes at Melanie. “Yea, she just really likes shopping.”
Jane’s mouth made a big O as she turned back to Melanie. “I already got my school supplies, but I was hoping to find some new clothes.”
“EEEEEEEEEEE. Let’s go shopping together! Come on El, we can look for something to wear for tonight!” Melanie said rather excitedly.
“I thought it was just like a bonfire party, why would I need a new outfit?” El complained.
“Why wouldn’t you! Don’t you want to look cute? Maybe you’ll meet someone like I did a year ago.” Melanie says while gazing lovingly at Jeff.
“Uggg, that’s just what I need, another Jeff in my life.” Jeff chucked his water bottle at El. “Hey! Watch it!”
“You know you love me.” Jeff said while laughing at El.
“Anyways, what were you planing to wear tonight.” Melanie asked El.
“Umm, jeans and a hoodie?”
“Nope! Even if you don’t want to go with Jane, I’m going to take you shopping. So what’s it going to be. Just us two? Or all three?” She asked while looking at El and Jane.
“Hey, what about me? Don’t I get to come watch?” Jeff asked while winking at Melanie. She giggled and smiled back at him. I could get behind that, yes I would definitely love to see her try on clothes, maybe sneak into that dressing room. . . .
“Aaaah babe. I love ya but sometimes a girl just needs to be with other girls. I’m sure you and Kai can figure out something else to do.” Melanie looked pointedly at me and glared. Why do I feel like she’s trying to keep me away from Jane? She should be helping me to get closer to her. “So what do you say Jane. Girls shopping day?”
Before Jane could respond I had to try to put a stop to this. It would ruin my plans. I just found my mate and I didn’t want to part with her already. “Or. . . we could all just relax here at the beach and you ladies could go do your shopping trip tomorrow. You could even go into one of the bigger cities, Salem, or Portland, I could drive.”
“No that won’t do, I have to work tomorrow.” Melanie said
“Take the day off. I’m sure the salon can manage without you for one day.” She glared at me again. If she could shoot daggers out of her eyes I’d be dead by now.
“Uh, no? That’s not how it works Kai. People actually book appointments for my services. I can’t just cancel on them to go shopping.”
“El and I can’t tomorrow either, we have orientation for school on that day. It’s why I was doing my shopping now. It’s my last day to get anything done before school starts.” Jane explained.
“Isn’t it a little early for the fall semester to start at the community college?” I asked. I thought it didn’t start until the end of September.
Jane looked over at me with a weird look on her face. As if I had grown a second head or something. “What? That’s where you're going right?”
“Noooo, I’m starting my senior year at Paravetiti Academy with El. How old did you think I was?” She’s still in High School!!! Damn that makes things more complicated. If she were a pack member it wouldn’t be a problem. But a civilian, or civi as I like to call them makes it all the more difficult. Not to mention her attending that particular school could become a problem.
“I don’t know, but not still in High School. How old are you?”
“I’ll be eighteen in a little over a month. How old are you?” She asked.
“Twenty.”
“Good for you. Now that we got that cleared up. Girls shall we go? I’m driving.” She seemed irritated. While Melanie jumped up in excitement, Jane stood up and started to pack her things, which were not much. When she went to get her beach towel she seemed to realize I was still sitting on it. “Do you mind?” She asked me while tugging on the towl.
“Nope, not at all. I think I’m enjoying sitting on it.” I said while flashing her my dazzling smile. She seemed to be taken aback for about 10 seconds before the irritated look returned. She then gave one rough tug of the towel and yanked it right out from under me while causing me to flip part way onto my side. “What the hell!” I said falling over into the sand. She shouldn’t have been able to do that.
“Well I guess you should have moved.” She tossed her towel over her shoulder and with a bag in one hand and flip flops in the other she started to walk back up the beach towards the parking lot.
The girls were quick to pick up their own things and started to follow her. “What your not going to help pack up?” Jeff asked Melanie.
“I think two big strong shifters can handle it.” Melanie said as she bent over to give Jeff a kiss goodbye. “Oh and Kai, I think you might want to re-evaluate your approach with Jane. I don’t think she is taking to it as well as you hoped. In fact I think it’s having the opposite effect.” She said. Then her and El left while Jeff and I were left alone on the beach.
“Dude, you need some help with your skills? You don’t know how to pick the ladies up or what?” Jeff said.
“What do you mean. I’ve never had a problem before.” I said while Jeff laughed out loud.
“Yea, but that’s because they all came on to you! Man don’t you know never to talk to a girl about her weight?”
“I didn’t. And she needed to eat. You heard her stomach growl.” I think everyone could hear it.
“You asked if she was on a diet. That’s the same thing as asking about her weight. You probably made her think she was ugly or something.”
“s**t. I f****d up didn’t I.” How was I going to fix this.
“Yea you did. But cheer up. You’ll get a chance later tonight to make it better. And you better leave on more stable ground because once that girl gets to Paravetiti, someone else will try to get her. She’s hot man. I mean I only got eyes for Melanie, but that doesn’t mean I can’t see what's right in front of me. Mate bond or not, if she’s not feeling it, you're not getting it.”
I let out a big sigh. I had my work cut out for me. Maybe Melanie did me a favor after all by getting Jane away. It will give me time to come up with a new game plan. “Alright, let's get this crap packed up. I want to do a run before the party tonight and make sure the area is clear and safe before our pack members get to the meeting place.”
“Alright bro, a run sounds good. Maybe it will help clear your head. I’ll get the volleyball net down, you get the cooler?” I nodded my head in agreement.
Jeff was right about others finding interest in Jane. Of course any red blooded male, even the blue ones would see how hot she was. After tonight, I wouldn’t have many opportunities to see her again. Unless. . . . .
“Hey Jeff, do we still have that invitation from the Paravetiti Academy?” I yelled at him as he was packing the net up. He looked over at me with a wicked grin.
“Ahhh hell yes! This is going to be epic!” I smiled as I began to plot my next move.
