Before we went back to the Boulder Creek Pack, I found myself following the mate bond pull and before I knew it I was sitting in a parking lot in view of a boutique shop. Jeff kept bugging me to get out of there, warning me that if Jane caught us it would just make things worse. But I couldn’t help it, I just wanted to be near her. I could breathe easier when she was nearby.
Jeff finally convinced me to get out of there but as I was getting ready to pull out I finally saw them exit the store. Looking in my rearview mirror I saw Jane looking happy, with a beautiful smile on her face. Satisfied, I finished pulling out of the parking lot and headed down the road to go home.
“Dude, that was so close! Melanie knew we were there! What if Jane could sense the mate bond too. You would be screwed man!”
“Did she mindlink you? What did she say?” Maybe she said something about Jane.
“Only to stay away, that it was her girls day. And to tell you to stop being a stalker or Jane will never accept you as her mate.” Damn that’s harsh.
“Am I really being that bad?”
“Well, I mean kinda. Look at it from a civi’s point of view. You just bump into a strange guy, who can’t keep his hands off you, or keep his distance, and shows up every place you go.” Jeff said.
Yea that didn’t sound too great. “Well then how is it going to look with us showing up to the party tonight?”
“Maybe we go, you do your hello nice to see ya again bit, and then keep clear of her? Give her some space?”
“You mean keep my ass away from her? Do you remember when you first met Melanie? You two couldn’t be pulled away from each other for the first week!” I had to send them to one of our beach houses because they were bumping like bunnies so much.
“Oh that was a great week.” Jeff said with a stupid grin on his face.
“My point exactly. So how do you think I feel? Every instinct in me is telling me to go grab her and mark her right now.”
“The difference is she doesn’t know about our world. Melanie at least knew some. Those in the tribe tell stories about our shifters and have their own stories and cryptids as well. Jane is coming into this blind. You're going to have to give her some time.” Damn he was right. I wish he wasn’t, but I can’t change what she is, or isn’t. Ghost started whining in my head. “Ghost, do you have something to add? You finally going to start talking to me again?”
“Don’t piss mate off. Mate needs more time.” Then he cut me off again. Well it seems all are in agreement here. So as hard as it is going to be, I guess I will have to keep my distance for awhile.
“Damn this is going to be hard.” I said to Jeff.
“I’m here for you bro!” Jeff said as he lightly slapped my shoulder.
“I just wish I had some sort of distraction. Something to help keep my mind, and body off of her.”
“Wait, didn’t you want to tell me something earlier this morning? Before we left the pack house?” Jeff questioned me. That’s right, I completely forgot about that in the midst of finding my mate and then coming to the realization she was human.
“Yea I did, it was about my family lineage. Just so I don’t repeat anything. What do you know about how the pack started, and where my family came from?” No use telling him something he already knows.
“Not much, just that your great something granddaddy came over from Africa sometime in the 1800’s and settled over here. Creating the first pack in the area. Later going to Hawaii on a diplomatic supply run or something and found our first Luna.” That was about what most knew.
“Well, I found some old journals, and ledgers dating back to the 1700’s. It seems back in Africa the shifters were starting to be hunted when in animal form for their pelts. A fur trader had come because of stories he heard of giant sized animals and their beautiful coats. My ancestor joined the hunting team in an effort to lead them away from the shifter community. There was some mention of the origins of my family not turning from human to animal, but the other way around.”
“Woah, you mean your ancestors were Anihomi?” Not many knew that term. I’m glad Jeff did. Hard to explain to some what Anihomi was. From what I knew they were animals first who were transformed into humans. There was no sharing of spirit like we do now like with Ghost and I. It was just one spirit, one soul. It seemed they were stronger than the shifters who shared a spirit.
“Yea, and stranger still, it seemed like they were the last of their kind. They escaped the fall of some ancient kingdom where they were the guardians of a special kind of royal line. It sounded like the vampires had something to do with the destruction of the kingdom.”
“Dude, maybe that’s why you're so freaky strong!”
“Oh it gets more freaky.” Even I couldn’t believe the next part I found.
“What could be more freaky than that!” Jeff exclaimed.
“Well, remember how you said my great something grandpa went to Hawaii?” Jeff motioned with his hands for me to continue. “Well it turns out his mate was rather special too. She could shift into other animals, but not land animals. She was a descendant from a demigod and could take the form of animals from the sea, like sharks.”
“Dude! Your swimming!” Jeff hit me across the arm hard causing my driving to swerve for a second. I glared at him in warning, he just shrugged his shoulders.
“Yea, I was thinking about that too.” My ability to hold my breath underwater was a lot longer than even olympic swimmers. I always just attributed it to being a strong shifter, but now I was wondering if it was something more. Even I had a hard time believing the information I found. I needed to talk to my dad about this and see if knows anything about it. If he does, he’s been rather tight lipped my entire life.
Just then we pulled up to the gate protecting my pack grounds, the guards already having it open and ready for us to pull through. We continued down the road passing homes, and little shops, much like the main streets you see in movies. Our own little town, complete with a school and a pack hospital. Further down and away from the main part of town was our pack house. It was modeled after the old plantation hotels in Hawaii, similar in architecture to the current Moana Hotel in Honolulu.
The main floor of the house had a front entry lounge with comfortable seating and a huge fireplace and a baby grand piano. There was also a cafeteria and kitchen and a smaller private dining room that sat up to 30, a huge ballroom for gatherings and 2 additional large meeting rooms. We had our own full gym and sports court in the house even though a larger athletics facility was in town. It included a pool and sauna which I used daily. On the opposite side of the house we had a full movie room that seated up to 40 people at a time, a game room with pool tables, air hockey, a video game lounge area with multiple TVs set up, and most recently a VR room.
The second floor were rooms for the single pack members, or those waiting for private housing outside of the pack house. Once a pack member reached the age of 16 they usually moved into one of these rooms. The third floor held the guest suites for visiting pack alphas and their own pack members. The fourth floor was divided into two separate wings. The first held my office and that of the future Luna, as well as offices for my beta and a few other offices, we also had a few conference rooms on that floor. The second wing was for the beta and his family. Right now it was just being used by Jeff and Melanie, but I’m sure there would be some little wolves to fill it up soon too.
The 5th and last floor was just for the alpha and his family. It had its own kitchen with an eat-in breakfast nook, and a formal dining room. But I preferred to eat outside on the veranda most days when I didn’t eat in the cafeteria. It also had a living room, media room, and private library, with additional rooms, it also had 5 guest suites and the alpha suite. Currently my parents were in one of the guest suites while they had a house built for them closer to town. I was happy with it, because once they left that floor would feel very empty. Though maybe now that I’ve found my mate it won't be empty for long. That is if I don’t screw it up.
We had an underground parking garage with dedicated spots for all in the house, but instead of pulling in there I parked in front of the house as we would just be leaving again soon. Jeff and I both got out of the car and headed towards the woods.
“I’m gonna run for a couple hours and hope it helps calm me down for the party later. You running with me or going off on your own.” I asked Jeff.
“Oh i’m with you all the way bro. I’ve always got your back.” I nodded once at him in conformation as we both started to take our clothes off to shift. Shifting into Ghost was as painless and as easy as thinking. One moment I was in my human shape, the next I was flying through the forest, the ground disappearing beneath my paws. I relaxed as I let Ghost take over, the trees passing by in a blur. The only real thing I was registering was Jeff’s wolf Shadow, keeping up behind me. We ran through the creek and past our pack territory up the mountain into the Valley of the Giants. Passing under the cover of some of the tallest and oldest trees in the area.
I lost myself in the run, forgetting all my worries and focusing on just being one with nature, one with Ghost. Letting wind blow through my fur. I lost all track of time until Jeff mindlinked me to let me know it was getting dark and we should head back. It surprised me because I had not even realized how much time had passed. But he was right, we did need to get back as we had other things to do tonight.
Arriving back into our own pack grounds, we made our way to where we had left our clothes. Shifting back into human form, we quickly dressed and headed into the pack house. Walking in we came across many pack members who were preparing to head out to the joint party, mainly singles hoping to find a mate. Even though the Grand Ronde tribe were not shifters, they did have a special ability that allowed them to be transformed into one if they were paired with a shifter mate. It had something to do with the magic in their blood passed down through the ages. It’s how Jeff was able to transform Melanie with his bite.
Jeff and I headed to the private elevator reserved for the alpha and beta families, heading to our own respective floors. “Meet you back downstairs?” Jeff asked.
I nodded in agreement as Jeff exited the elevator and the doors closed. Heading up to my own floor, I quickly grabbed something to eat from the kitchen, then made my way to shower and get ready. Struggling with how to dress, as I wanted to impress Jane, but not seem like I was trying too hard. I settled on jeans and a plain tee shirt and threw my leather jacket over my arm. Heading back down I found Jeff already waiting for me by the side of my car.
“Let's do this.” I said as we both got in the car. For better or worse, tonight could be life changing.
