Chapter 2

****Kai**** My beta and his mate were being annoying again. It was too damn early in the morning for this crap. The last thing I wanted to do was come downstairs for breakfast to see them all over one another. Do they really need to eat breakfast in each other’s laps? They must have felt my glare because no sooner did I think of it then the little she wolf jumped off her mates lap and took the seat next to him. Yea, that’s right. Big scary alpha is in the room. I made my way over to the buffet and piled my plate high, then grabbed a second plate and did the same. Two cups of chocolate milk later and I was plopping myself right in front of the two love birds. “You know. . .” My beta Jeff began “Shut it.” I yapped back at him, not letting him speak. I thought when I turned 18 I’d find my mate. Two years later and I still haven’t found her. My worst fear was that I lost her 8 years ago. I never knew for sure. But when I was around her back then, even as a child, I felt a bond. I was sure we were meant for each other. Then I got word one day that she and her family had been killed. They never found her body, but her blood, there was so much blood. My dad couldn’t keep me away from it, even at the age of 12 I was stronger than him. I would have ripped to shreds anyone who tried to harm her or her family. But she was gone. And my pack was pressuring me to take a chosen mate so they could have a Luna. “I’m just saying, you could be doing the same thing if you took a chosen mate. Then you’d understand.” Jeff said. Did he not hear me the first time? “I said shut it.” I said again louder. “There is a joint gathering tonight with the Grand Ronde tribe. Maybe you can find someone there.” He tried again. I was not in the mood for this crap at all. The last two months I had been feeling extra grumpy for some reason and this little punk just pushed the wrong button. “Training grounds! Now!” I shouted at him with my alpha timber. Leaving my two plates of food barely touched and only one glass of chocolate milk emptied. He jumped up out of his seat and flew out the double doors making his way outside. I followed him and still beat him there. “Since you seem to need a lesson in obedience, I’ll have to beat it into you.” I growled at him. “Yes alpha!” He yelled back at me. He took his shirt off and stood in a fighting stance. I didn’t even bother. I doubt I’d even break a sweat. Only one person has ever been able to take me down, and she’s gone. “Attack!” I commanded him. He came after me fast and hard, trying to knock me off balance. I had to give it to him, he actually made me budge. That’s why he was my beta, my second in command. He wasn’t just my best friend, he was also the second strongest in the pack. Though he could still be an asshole. He quickly flew behind me and grabbed me around my chest. “What do you think you're doing, giving me a hug?” I asked him. I heard him laugh and the next second he was picking me up feet and all off the ground and slammed my ass on the dirt. What the hell. I was so shocked at what he just did I didn’t even notice him putting me in a choke hold. I reached behind me with my arms and yanked him forwards and over my head, releasing his grip on me. I slammed him down on the ground and flipped my own body over his, pinning him immobile. “Do you yield?” I asked “I do, I give up. You’re the boss!” He choked out. “And don’t you forget it!” I answered back. I removed myself from him by rolling over and then immediately starting laughing. He stood up and watched me with a silly grin on his face as I rolled around in the dirt laughing. Once I got control of myself I stood up and slapped my hand on his shoulder, making him flinch. “What the hell man. Since when can you lift me up?” “It was only for a few seconds, but it caught you off guard, didn’t it.” He said proudly. “Yes, yes it did. But now look at us, covered in dirt. Go shower and then meet me back in the dining hall to finish our breakfast. I’m suddenly hungry again and need to speak to you about something.” I had been doing some research on my family lineage and came across some interesting things I wanted to bounce off him. But I would have a hard time thinking about it without some food in me first. Once I showered, I came back to the dining hall to find it empty of everyone and everything except my beta. “Uhh, bad news bro, they took all the food away and chef said stay away until lunch time. I guess we missed it.” I looked up at the clock that hung above the double doors of the dining hall to see it read just after 9am. Well if I weren’t a monkeys uncle. Normally I love how punctual our chef is, when I’m on time. “How about you go to Salt with me. Melanie said El wanted to go this morning so I had her come meet us here. The girls are already outside waiting for us.” Jeff said while motioning towards the outside. I did like their food, and the staff was always amazing. “Fine, but I’m driving.” I couldn’t stand his driving since he found his mate. It was like he went extra slow just to protect her. Jeff smiled and said. “Of course. I’ll warn, errr tell the girls.” And then he ran off. I went a different way through the house to get to the garage and get my favorite toy out. A few minutes later and we were flying down the highway with the girls in the backseat of my black Porsche Turbo. Soon we were pulling into the outlet mall in Lincoln City and I began to feel Ghost pacing back and forth in my mind. He’s been mainly quiet and keeping himself away from me for the last two months, and he won't even tell me why. It’s probably the reason I’ve been so grumpy. As the café came into view, so did something else. Someone was driving a 1965 Shelby Mustang in Poppy Red and they pulled in right across from the café. I had to get a look at that car. I pulled around and parked the other side and found a spot kiddy corner to it. “Bro, did you see that car!” Jeff exclaimed. “I did. I think we need to go check it out, what do you think.” “f**k yea!” Melanie slapped Jeff upside the head from behind him. “Oww. What did you do that for!” He said as he rubbed his head. “Language. Also, I don’t get why guys care so much about cars. What’s so special about them.” Melanie said, looking like she was pouting and crossing her arms. “What car?” El asked “That one right over there.” Jeff pointed to it. “Oh hey! That’s Jane!” El said happily. Jane opened her door at that moment and stepped out into the sunlight and I swear my heart stopped. She stood about 5’9” with long wavy golden brown hair that was pulled up into a ponytail high on her head. It bounced around her bare shoulders as she walked towards the back of her car. Her shorts perfectly showed off the length of her toned legs while the tank revealed her muscle on her arms as well. She had a light golden glow to her otherwise pink skin that showed she had spent some time in the sun this summer as well. I opened my door to go see this beauty and immediately was hit with the sweetest aroma I had ever smelled. It was vanilla and brown sugar and hints of cedar wood. Ghost was running around and jumping in my head making it even harder to think. I felt like I was in a trance as my body seemed to move all on its own towards Jane. Before I knew it I was standing right behind her watching her bend over into her trunk. My eyes moved downward to gaze at that flawlessly round derriere, feeling a problem begin to rise within my own lower regions. I heard El say something and before I knew it Jane was crashing her head into the roof of the trunk and was about to knock herself backwards onto the pavement. I quickly caught her, wrapping my arms around her to steady her and felt the electric currents spark all over my skin. “Mate! Mate! It’s our Mate!” Ghost was growling in my head. He was right. All the signs were there. Is this why he’s been so distant? Did he know she was nearby when I didn’t? Was I given a second chance mate? I leaned my head down to inhale her scent and couldn’t help stop myself from saying “mine” under my breath. She tried to stand up on her own so I helped her, but I couldn’t stand to break the connection so I kept one hand on her in the guise of helping. “Hi El, I’m fine. Just a little bump, I’ve had worse.” A growl escaped my lips. Worse? She’s had worse? What could my mate have been through? She must be protected. She turned around and faced me and by goddess she had the most beautiful eyes. They were a mix of brown and green with specks of gold, one might call them hazel but they were so much more than that. They also held shock at seeing me, and then a deep longing. I wanted this woman so bad. I could feel Ghost rising to the surface, and it was all I could do to hold him back from claiming her right here right now. And then I smelled her desire pooling in her nether regions and I froze. El grabbed her away from me and I had to let her. Just like I had to let Jeff pull me away from where she was. I heard El speak again as I was quickly being ushered away. “Jane, are you sure you’re okay? I think you should go get seen. How about I drive you over to Amy? I’m sure she’d want to take a look at you.” Yes, I would have to thank El later for taking care of her for me. Jeff opened the door to café Salt and the smells of coffee and food helped clean the scent of my mate away, allowing me to think clearly once again. Jeff led me to a table in the back that had a little more privacy and pushed me to sit down while Melanie got in line at the front to order. “What the hell man? You looked like you were ready to ravage her right there. Was that Ghost popping up? Your eyes turned gold. She’s not your. . .” “Mate. Jeff, she’s my mate.” I said slowly to him. He looks shocked at me, then a huge smile spreads on his face. “I knew it! I knew that’s what had to be happening! Congratulations man! Why aren’t you chasing her down right now! Is it because she’s human?” What did he say? “What do you mean human?” I asked. He looked a little surprised as he answered. “I could smell it all over her. It was a little weird actually, she had a stronger human smell then most. Usually those who live by the rez are more muted but not her.” I hadn’t even noticed that she was human. I was so entranced with her that all I could smell was the vanilla/brown sugar/cedar wood scent. Her mate sent. But she wasn’t her. Her scent was like fresh rain, and lightning. The one I lost. Could I really have another mate? Or is this one my true fated mate. I needed more information. “What do you know about her.” “Not much actually. What I know I got from Melanie. Here she comes, why don’t you ask her yourself?” He motioned to his mate walking over to our table. She sat down next to Jeff and he wrapped his arm around her. “What’s going on guys?” She asked quizzically. “What do you know about this Jane girl.” I asked straight forward. She raised an eyebrow at me before responding. “Well she just moved here a couple months ago. She lives with Amy Holt. They moved into Amy’s dad's place after he passed away in June. Then Amy got a job at the rez clinic as a nurse. I think she’s about El’s age, other then that I don’t know much about her.” I needed more. But how could I go about it without scaring her off? If she’s human, then she probably doesn't know anything about shifters. Would I really want someone like that as my Luna? Would my pack accept her? I needed a plan. “Is Jane going to be at the joint party tonight?” I asked Melanie. “I don’t know, I don’t think El was even going to go, but I can check for you. Do you want her there?” “Yes.” “Both of them?” Hmmm, good question. El could act as a buffer for Jane and help make her more comfortable. But she could also get in the way. “Yes. Make sure they are both there.” “Alright, give me a minute.” She stood up and walked out of the café, phone in hand. Not long after she walked back in, and the food and drinks arrived with her. Melanie did a good job ordering for us. We had coffees, an assortment of bagels and breakfast burritos and even an acai bowl. “So it seems Jane refused to go back to the rez right now. Something about having a plan and sticking to it. But promised she’d go see Amy when she goes back. El is taking her to the beach but is going to keep an eye on her.” She said while eyeing me. “What beach?” “Roads end.” Melanie said, looking at me with a knowing look. “Are we going there next?” She asked. I shouldn’t, I should give her space. We never even said a word to one another. But I felt pulled to her. Like an invisible line tethering my soul to hers. “Jeff, go check the trunk and see if the beach stuff is still in there from last time. I think I need a little sun today.” He smiled as he jumped up out of his chair and grabbed my keys I placed on the table. I then had Melanie go place another order to go. Who knows, maybe someone will get hungry later. As for the beach, it’s a big one. Maybe we could just accidentally run into them.
