That night, Elena rested little. She stayed awake, eyes open, thoughts racing through the dark hours without pause.
Each time her eyelids dropped, the image reappeared without asking. Then darkness did not help at all.
Her mother standing beside Adrian Vale.
The same Adrian everyone feared.
It was Adrian, the one students mentioned in hushed tones across campus - speaking his name too clearly felt like inviting something sharp into the air.
Light from the morning sun crept past her curtains, yet still couldn’t lift the weight pressing on her heart. Though bright outside, something deep within stayed dark and tangled. A quiet ache sat where comfort should have been. The room warmed up slowly, but her insides remained cold. Daylight reached the floorboards without reaching her thoughts.
Elena perched on the corner of her mattress, eyes fixed once more on the screen in her hand.
Messages stayed put. They hadn’t moved at all.
Real.
Not a dream.
Almost touching the image, she paused, thoughts rushing in. A quiet moment stretched while doubts took shape inside her head.
Her Mother Knew Adrian?
Who could have missed speaking of him until now?
Who sent those messages, then?
Out of nowhere, a sharp rap at the door broke through her daydream. She blinked, startled back into the room.
Into the room came Sophia, not pausing at the door.
Out of nowhere, her voice cut through the quiet. That face - like you haven’t slept in days.
Her grin felt heavy, worn out already. "Morning right back at you," she said
“I called you five times last night.”
“I fell asleep.”
Sophia sat down next to her, eyes tight with doubt. The mattress dipped under her weight.
“You’ve been acting weird since yesterday.”
Elena hesitated.
Faster than a thought, she held words meant for Sophia. Quiet moments stretched while secrets waited behind her lips.
Yet she froze mid-step.
Fear.
Could it be real, those words sent across? Maybe truth hides where we least expect.
Suppose those nearby actually had secrets they kept close. Maybe silence hides more than anyone guesses.
“I’m fine,” Elena said, too soft to be true.
For a second, Sophia just looked at her, then let out a breath that sounded like giving up.
“Well, whether you’re stressed or not, you’re still coming to class today.”
Elena groaned softly.
“I don’t feel like going anywhere.”
“Tough luck. Attendance matters.”
Even with thoughts swirling nonstop, Elena let Sophia pull her toward campus.
Laughter spilled through the corridors while students rushed by, their voices bouncing off lockers. Noise clung to every corner of campus where footsteps mixed with chatter. Hallways pulsed under a steady stream of bodies drifting between classrooms. Some paused mid-step to talk, others kept moving without slowing down.
Everything looked normal.
Too normal.
Meanwhile, Elena felt like her entire world was cracking apart.
Inside the Theatre Arts building, voices began to murmur along the walls. The hall breathed sound before they took their first step forward.
Girls straightened instantly.
A few learners reached for their devices. One by one, screens lit up in quiet hands.
Out of the way they scrambled, fast. One step ahead, everyone seemed to jump back at once.
Fingers clamped hard around Elena's wrist, Sophia didn’t let go.
Her voice trembled, soft but sharp with surprise.
Elena frowned. “What?”
Sophia turned her eyes to the doorway.
“Adrian Vale is here.”
One moment it was there, next - gone. The space near Elena emptied without warning.
Slowly, she turned.
There stood the man.
Tall.
Cold.
A man wore a dark suit, setting him apart from the crowd. His clothing drew eyes while others blended in. Sharp lines of his jacket cut through the dull tones around him. People nearby seemed softer, less defined. The fabric held shadows close, like it was meant to be noticed.
Stillness stayed on his face when a few teachers nodded hello. Quiet came before their voices.
What scared Elena more than anything wasn’t him being there.
It was his eyes.
Right away, when he walked into the hall, his eyes found her without delay.
As if his steps had led him only toward her.
Something clenched inside Elena, sharp and low.
No.
Maybe it just happened that way.
Sophia leaned closer. “Why does it feel like he’s staring at you?”
Her eyes darted elsewhere just a moment later.
“He’s not.”
Yet she spoke as if unsure of herself.
Footsteps dragged behind Adrian like shadows as he moved down the hall. Quiet settled around his shoulders without effort.
He held power like it was something alive, close, hard to let go of.
Footsteps near, her pulse jumped. Closer now, each beat louder. Near enough to touch, fear gripped tight.
Out of nowhere, his steps came to a halt just inches from where she stood.
Nothing moved in the hall. Silence settled like dust on still air.
For a moment, Elena could not remember the way air moved in and out. Her chest stayed still, like it had forgotten its job.
Fear crept in as his face came into sharper view.
Sharp jawline.
Dark eyes.
Stillness sat on their face, yet it carried weight. Quiet did not mean safety.
Just silence between them, then. The air stayed heavy without words.
His eyes lingered a moment on the chain at her throat, cold metal catching the light. A pause settled before he looked away.
His expression changed.
Just slightly.
Yet Elena saw it.
“You should be careful wearing that,” he said quietly.
His deep voice sent chills through her body.
Frowning slightly, Elena reached for the necklace without thinking. Confusion flickered across her face.
Her mother once held it close. The past lives within its shape.
Just as she opened her mouth, Adrian moved to the side, then kept moving down the path.
Just like that.
Whispers burst out among the students right away.
“Oh my God, he talked to her.”
“Does he know her?”
“What was that about?”
Sophia looked completely stunned.
“Elena,” she whispered slowly. “Why did Adrian Vale just warn you about your necklace?”
Her lips parted, yet silence filled the space where speech should be.
Something awful sat inside her, quiet but certain. She could feel it long before words gave it shape.
Adrian recognized it.
So that was how he came to know her mother.
