Chapter 3

”How about now, you are not with you family this time?” his friend asked. He just celebrated his birthday on his dorm with his dorm-mates. “Forget about them. I don’t really care. They even did to find me especially this time. That is my birthday.” Kurt said, and mocking himself out on his bed. “Maybe they find this time. How can you know that they find you if you did not give them your address?” Hearing this from his friend, he realized everything that he did wrong. He didn’t doubtly went out in the dorm leave his friends eating. He just wearing his brown short and a white sleeveless, obviously he didn’t wear off his school uniform. He run going outside the building. And have a ride with a taxi going to their room.

He take forty minutes of ride, he paid five hundred pesos bills with the taxi. And quickly getting inside the house. There, when he opened the door. He was surprised when both his parents are alone and sad staring the foods in the table being prepared for his birthday. When his mother and father know that he’s coming, they give him a huge and deep hugged and kiss on his forehead while his mother is crying in front of him. Kurt can’t stop his emotion, so he cried out and replied with a hugged. What an emotional birthday? “I thought you were not coming?” his mother cried out, kissing on his head. “We prepared foods for you, because we know you were about to come. And thanks, God because you are here.” His father bring him in front of the table and introduce the foods on it. Not too many, but enough for them. “Sorry, for everything! Promise this time I will change and I will not scold you anymore. Promise.” His father hugged him too deeply. Kurt get affected on what his father talking about. And it is one of his wish, that his father will accept him and follow what he want.

He didn’t know he already cried. Secretary Erica and Assistant Yap, shocked on why Kurt is crying with no reason. But it because he imagine as what he have done in the past. He stopped for a while when he remember his father. His father has an illnesses, a heart disease and it soon to be died. They didn’t bring it in the hospital as what his father requested. He is too old already to have some rest. But Kurt want to pay all of his debt on his father. He quick going out on his office, leaving his two staff without knowing the result and was shocked. The cake they have bring for Kurt thanksgiving is nothing and useless. They can’t eat it without Kurt, that is why they put it on his table and leave it alone.

Kurt too fast to get in his home as quick. He want to meet his father since two weeks past, he didn’t ever visit it. He get inside in his room father, when he’s trying to open the door, he heard his mom crying. So, he’s curious about it that is why he think that his father is already dead. He open the door too badly, and like shedding his tears slowly when he saw his father didn’t breathe normally. He hugged it and kiss on the forehead. He just miss his father. He feel that his father getting weak, and it make him panic. “Mama, we should bring him in the hospital.” he shouted, because he do not know what to do because of being panic. He cried, and he does not mind of it whoever watching. He carried his father going out in the room. And get in the car, because he need to bring it in the hospital.

While he is driving, he keep on crying and wipe it. While his mother keep on rubbing his father chest to breath normally. He was not able to call the ambulance because he forgot to bring his cellphone and left it in his office. He drive fast, overtaking some cars who are too slowly.

They get in the hospital while carrying his father. And it was get by some nurse using the rolling bed, and bring it on the operation. While seeing all the doctors, who are panic wearing their doctor suit and face mask while running through the ICU. He meet Nadia who is one of them, since she is the one will perform the operation. Kurt hold his hand to stop her and Nadia shocked on what he was doing. “What are you doing?” Nadia curiously asked, while on her face show on how she panic.

“Please save my father.” Kurt cried out and hold out Nadia’s hand. Nadia run through the ICU, she never answer him.

Kurt is on the visitor’s waiting area with his mother. His mother hugging him while he is crying. His mother keep on combing Kurt hair using fingers and wiping Kurt tears that are dropping on her duster. His mother trying to calm him down, but he never stop on crying. It’s normal, since his father is on critical condition. And he get can’t over this if his father will die. So, he keep on praying and asking God’s help.

Almost five hours, they are waiting on the visitor’s area. Kurt keep on walking vice versa. His mother tried to settle him down but he never listen. He keep on walking. Six hours passed by, still the operation is not yet done. Seven hours. Eight hours. Nine hours. And Ten hours, Nadia went out from the ICU. She face Kurt on his mother while wearing off her gloves and face mask in front of them.

“Doc, how’s my father?” Kurt said, while pulling in Nadia’s hands. He keep on pulling it.

“He’s alright. But you are not allowed to visit him.” Nadia said that made Kurt and his mother surprised and curious. So this time he hold out Nadia’s hand. “You keep on pulling me, my hands getting hurt.” She added and rubbing her hand that is hurt.

“What do you mean?” Kurt blankly replied.

“He’s fine. You are not allowed to touch the patient because he got an illness that is transmitted and it’s dangerous. We will going to put in the private room where no one can touch it but you can speak it and see it but far from him. And you need to consult first to some nurse to have some face mask and they will give you a medicine that is against this virus.” Nadia said.

“What kind of illness he has?” Kurt’s mother asked.

“We are on study yet. From now on, we are not able to know what kind of virus your husband has. We only detect this virus during the operation using on the monitor. And we are able to see the virus on how it spread on his veins out from his body. So, this time we are now on a thorough examinations to know what kind of virus on and we are able to know what kind of medicine we can give to the patients.”

“Do whatever is that, just to save my father. Please. “Kurt cried on in front of Nadia.

“As a doctor, we will do our responsibility. Just keep on praying and be strong. Because we keep on doing our best just to save him. Actually, this is my first time encountering this kind of patient. I have to go.” Nadia said and leaving them both.

Kurt bumped himself on the bench. Dragging his head too bad. He is insane right now. And he does not know what to do on it. He is out of his mind this time. Kurt you should be strong. Your beauty will be useless if you will do it always. It can damage your health.

Nadia was on the on the balcony of the hospital. Having some fresh air, because she spend her time ten hours on the operation just to save Kurt’s father. Actually, his father almost died during the operation but because of Nadia, she able to bring back its life.

Kurt see her on the balcony, so he approach her and to have some talk. He also want to thank Nadia for saving his father and keep him alive even though this time his father was on the critical condition. He bring with him a two cups of cappuccino. He give one to Nadia. At first Nadia did not accept it but he was force by Kurt, so she don’t have a choice but to accept it. They have a one-on-one-talk.

“Thank you for saving my father.” Kurt started to talk because no one of them who talk.

“Your welcome.” She simply replied without even looking at Kurt.

“Are you mad or what?” Kurt asked and it made Nadia face at him.

“No—she smiled.

“Actually, I am not just here to thank. But I am here to forget as what happened to us.”

“Did something happened to us?” Nadia innocently asked. She wink but not in a good way.

“Did you forgot, about the accident happened that you almost killed me.” sipping his coffee.

“Uh… is that what you mean? Okay, sure.” She replied. When Nadia move herself backward. She slip her feet and make her almost fall in the floor but Kurt catch her. And they almost kiss each other, touch their nose on their position. And her coffee fell off on her doctor’s suit. And it takes five minutes.

But Nadia is one who ruin their position. She stand that nothing’s happened. She fixed her messy doctor’s suit. She’s tend to leave Kurt but Kurt hold her hand and pulled her out, and they was able to hug each other. Another sweet position, they almost touch their lips but not their nose anymore. And another shocked for Nadia.

Nadia push him out but too hard. She’s getting mad this time. She stared at Kurt too badly. “What?” Kurt cutely asked.

“What do you want from me?” she getting mad.

“That is not an intention. You can leave now.” Kurt give his handsome look. He glared at Nadia too sweet.

“It’s better.” She strictly replied and leave Kurt rejectedly.

“Geez. Thanks to me, because you are beautiful.” He cutely said on his own.

Nadia is on her room. She always imagining as what happened to her with Kurt last time. Honestly, she can’t forget about it. She always thinking of it. Imagining Kurt’s face make her smile widely. But what does it mean? Is she in love or what? She touch her nose because it touch on Kurt nose. She rub it repeatedly. What an obsessed? She keep on rolling herself on her bed, like she get can’t over with this. Am I in love? She said on her own. She’s getting insane right now. Her night becomes and unforgettable. Actually, Kurt was the first guy who turn her and made her being like this, who is obsessed but not really. Maybe she is now starting on falling in love. She start on opening her heart for someone. But let’s see if she’s ready. She is like a woman who is stuck in barrel and can’t get out. Which in a small world her life turning around special to mention, Kurt.

When she trying to close her eyes to sleep, someone caught her attention and she was not able to sleep. She open her eyes widely, and nodding. She remember Luke. Almost two weeks, Luke didn’t show himself to Nadia and as well as Nadia didn’t chat him or what. She just forget about it because she’s too busy. “You’re not a true friend.” Kylie’s voice, she heard about. It’s just her imagination, actually Kylie is not around and with her. She always on hearing this hatred from out of nowhere. She bite her nails on her fingers and thinking what to do. But still, she didn’t think what to do.

She woke up around seven o’clock in the morning. She is now prepared as a doctor, which is wearing a doctor’s suit and with a stethoscope hanging on her neck. She walk through her patient room, since she need to visit it first before she will going to go in the testing room to test the blood of Kurt’s father to know what virus it has. And they can able to examine it after. While walking on the hallway through, she meet Kylie who is bring with a back-up but this time Kylie is not wearing a nurse suit. So, Nadia thinking and curious of it. Kylie just walking like she didn’t see Nadia. But Nadia stopped her.

“Where are you going?” Nadia asked staring at Kylie who is not looking at her which she’s looking on her way.

“None of your business. I already sign a resignation paper.” She simply replied without any emotion.

“What do you mean.” She’s getting more curious. Her face show that she seek an answer.

“I’m going to leave in this hospital. I’ll be applying as Luke assistant secretary. It means I’ll be working with him. And not a big deal since he is my friend, and we can find time to have some fun and forget everything that make us burden. Actually, why I’m leaving this hospital because I can’t really get over the situation especially we always meet.” She said and stared at Nadia so irritatedly.

“So, you are trying to leave me?” she asked.

“Why not? I’m just going back if everything will turn to be okay.” Kylie answered.

“You should not do this, Kylie. If you leave me, I’m going to be alone.” She hold Kylie’s hand and begging her not to leave her.

“It’s better. So you can able to think of your own mistake.” Kylie reject Nadia’s hand who is holding on her wrist. She leave Nadia without even saying goodbye. She just leave Nadia without reaction. Nadia can’t think of it seriously. She drop her tears down on her face. She have a seat in a bench along the hallway. While crying, she always wipe it. She’s getting upset this time as what Kylie said. Both her friends are now leaving her in a midst. She will be alone forever if they will not settle down this problem.

She don’t have a choice, so she stop on crying. Going inside on her patient room. She find on how her patient enjoying games on her cellphone. The same routine, she check the patient pulse and temperature. She just let the patient playing games especially on the cellphone that is really prohibited for the patient because of its radiation. She is upset and sad this time, so she was not able to stop her patient. She have her seat in front of the patient and taking down notes about the temperature and pulse beats of patient on the patient daily records.

“Did you cry?” the girl asked, and stop on playing.

“Nope.”

“Oh…Your eyes goes bubbly. I think you cry. What happened?”

“Just forget about it. Just my asthma.”

“You have an asthma? Why you did not cure it especially you’re a doctor?”

“I’m too busy. And I need to cure you first after mine.” She rub her patient forehead because it’s getting sweat. “This time you become normal. And tomorrow will be the operation.”

“You should not do it. Just let me to die.” The girl stop Nadia on rubbing her forehead.

“No. I’m going to save you and that’s the final. Whatever happened? You should fight for it because your parents is hoping for your operation that it will be successful later on.”

“I’m not going to leave this time.”

“You can’t leave me this time since you are the one who remain as my friend. If you will leave me, I’ll be sad and alone.” The girl stared at her seriously. It’s like she is interested and curious about Nadia being said.

“That is why you cry because your friends leave you?” the girl said and hold Nadia’s wrist.

“Yes. They leave me because I am bad but actually I’m not like that. I want you to stay with me and help me after I help you.” Nadia dropping her tears on her face. She’s now crying and being an emotional.

“Since you treat me as your friend. I promise you not to leave you and I’m going help you after.” A girl said and wipe down Nadia’s tears.

“You should, since I am not the only one who hope that. There is your other friends and your family. They hope for your good health.”

“Sorry for everything. Which I want to die. I realized that is not good, since someone’s needing my help and my smile.” The girl get emotional it cried but not really too much.

“You should.” Nadia hug the girl.

Today, is the finalization of the case. Prosecutor Kurt is preparing his documents and as well as Prosecutor Lee. They are now inside in the session hall. When, the judge bang the gavel on its table, it made everyone settle down, and silence around the session hall. Both of them are asked to have their go in front for finalization. Everyone are excite especially the family of the victim to know the result. It goes creepy around. And both suspect are nervous, and can’t settle down.

“Judge Lim. I am here for the finalization. For two consecutive days of due process, I already have the result. And it is not bias, actually. If bias you can reject and get my license as a prosecutor…” he glance around. “….According on my study, using the evidence I have shown last two days. It proves that they are really the suspect of killing the victim…” he pointed out the two suspect and stared at them too badly.”…As the Prosecutor, and according on the deliberation we had last time with the victim’s family. If I can prove that they are really the suspect. They will be imprison within ten years. So, I already prove and there is no doubt. They are really the suspect.” It made everyone surprised as what Kurt said and explain. Prosecutor Lee can’t react on it. He’s getting mad right now with Prosecutor Kurt. He doesn’t know what to do and can’t contradict with Prosecutor Kurt. So, he don’t have a choice. Both suspect are getting sweat and nervous.

After the session, Kurt went at his office and throw himself down on his swivel chair. He’s stress and depressed on what happened during the due process. His secretary and assistant are not around because they are given task by Prosecutor Kurt, which to entertain the family of the victim. And made them to settle down, and the burial of the victim. Since they just use to cremate it. And they are assisted by his assistant and secretary.

He took a deep breath and wear his tuxedo and put it on his table. He raise his foot on his table and crossing it, just like he is resting. And after he yawn.

After being alone, he remember as what happened to him with Nadia to the hospital. He laugh at it. Because he can’t get over as what Nadia’s reaction. Actually, the first scene was not his intention but on the scene is his intention. He just want to test Nadia, on how sweet she is. He is very thankful with Nadia, after saving his father even though his father was still on a critical condition. He is worried on it and afraid of what happen to his father after. He won’t to miss it. So, he’s driving through the hospital to see his father but not only his father as well as Nadia.

He come in the hospital, bring a bucket of coffee—one for him and for Nadia; just an offers. He keeps on smiling and thinking on what might happen to him after. He use the elevator instead the stairs since it is on the third floor. On the elevator, he always fix himself while facing his reflection on the elevator. He raise his wristwatch to check the time, but seeing it is not a big deal for him because he just smile and glared.

He put his left hand into his pants pocket while on the right hand hanging a bucket of coffee. He walk like famous one, such everyone stared at him and surprised it’s because on his beauty. Instead of going to his father, he just went to the receptionist and asking where is Nadia. “Did you know where Professor Nadia is?” he put the bucket of coffee on the uppercase and lean it.

“I don’t know, Sir. I think she was on her patient right now. She always going there to check it.” One of the receptionist answered. And stared at Kurt while her eyes sparkled like a fireworks.

“Thank you!” he wink. And the receptionist reacted so much, and giggling like an obsess bird. “Can I ask the number of the room?” he added.

“Room 142.”

He went there to see Nadia. Going there, he feel nervous and shyness since he doesn’t know what might happen if Nadia will reject him or summoned. He just prepared himself, in a way of rolling his collar and necktie. He clear his throat before he open the door. Nadia surprised after Kurt appearance. Nadia just stared at him surprisingly like nothing’s happen. But Kurt surprised as well when he heard Nadia’s patient speak—“I think he is perfect for you!” Nadia put her pointing finger to make the girl silent. She feel ashamed as what the girl said. When Kurt heard it, he feel like someone’s hugging him smoothly. And his hearts doesn’t beat normally. Like a big impact of what he heard for him. He’s getting his feelings to Nadia.

“What brings you here?” a simple replied of Nadia. She step forward to Kurt and crossing her arms like she will going to push Kurt away. She just raise her left eyebrow.

“I just want to meet you this time. Because after you save my father, I am going to pay you back.”

“I’m not asking a payment. Unless about the bill in this hospital. But it was not my responsibility at all. If you will just going to pay the bills here in hospital, you can go to the cashier and pay there, not me.” her eyes lit up.

“No, it doesn’t what I mean. I mean, I’m going to give you this coffee. I bring it for you.” he held the cup of coffee to Nadia. But Nadia stared at it too badly. “No need, it getting cold. And disgust to drink. If you will going to give me a coffee, it should be hot not cold.” Nadia rejected.

When Nadia move going back to the patient, Kurt hold it tightly like he’s stop Nadia from leaving him. He pulled her to face him seriously. “I need to talk to you.”

“I don’t want. I’m busy this time, because today is the surgery of my patient. I am going to make the patient calm down before the surgery. So, you need to go out and don’t disturb me.” she pushed Kurt out the room.

Kurt was just leaning his back to the wall. Putting his both hand on his pocket while waiting for Nadia inside. He will never leave until they cannot talk. It is important? I think it is not but Kurt look seriously on it.

A minute goes by, some nurse and doctor run through the room where Nadia is. Pushing a rolling bed and look panic. He curious on what happen. He think blankly this time, and he don’t know everything. And after, He saw the patient lying on the rolling bed going out from the room who is unconscious, while Nadia is performing CPR, going to the ICU. Kurt followed it, but it is not allowed and restricted area to get inside unless you are a doctor. So, Kurt just stand outside and wait for some update.

After Nadia, pushing Kurt to went out. She was shocked when the patient getting unconscious and its temperature and pulse monitor doesn’t beat normally. And she get panic. She called some rescue to help the patient. While waiting the rescuer are on their way, she’s performing CPR to get back the pulse of the patient. Going out from the room, she saw Kurt who is outside. She never look at it since Kurt is staring at him. She think, that maybe Kurt is waiting for him outside and she get irritated and mad to him.

In the ICU, she gathered some doctors and nurses for the surgery. While she was her hand thoroughly since she is the one will perform the surgery. The patient had a heart cancer, so they will going to transplant another heart for the patient to survive. And it is there choice and no other way, to save its life. She wear her hair net, face mask, hand gloves and as well her members.

Before she will start the surgery, she perform CPR for the patient to turn its pulse. “Sixty degree….push.” she commanded. “…………seventy degree….push.” And the patient turn to normal but not really. Since its pulse turns normally, they will going to start the surgery.

“Sharp knife.” She commanded.

“Here!” she slice the chest of the patient with ten inches to see the heart inside.

“Scissors.”

“Here—

“Sanction.” The heart beat weakly, and abnormally.

“Sharp knife.” She cut the veins around the heart carefully. And get off the heart out from the body and put in the bowl with cold water.

Everyone’s panic and frightened since the pulse rate monitor doesn’t function anymore. The bloodlines doesn’t show normally. She put the inhaler and dextrose to the patient to help the patient breath. “We have thirty minutes to put the heart.” She said. And asked some nurse to get the heart from the chiller for the transplant. “Twenty five minutes. Faster.” She get the heart in the chiller and put it directly on the position. The blood are running out so they need to make it fast. “Twenty minutes.” Everyone get panic since there is an allotment for the transplants.” God.” Nadia said. She connect every veins to the hearts she’s replacing. “Fifteen minutes left.” She said, and quickly connecting the veins. “Needle, please.” She commanded. She stitch the veins to connect each other. “Ten minutes.” The patient shaking its body and like being possess. Every shocked of what happened, and afraid of what might happen after this surgery. “Five minutes.” Nadia getting sweat. It flowing around her neck down on her chest and breast. “Sanction, please.” She get the sanction and pushed it inside the heart to make it beat. “Sixty degree.” She commanded and pushed the sanction. “Seventy degree.” Pushed again. “Gosh, it’s four minutes left.” One of the nurse said. Nadia keep on pushing the sanction on the heart to make it beat. She’s sweating so much. But the pulse doesn’t beat and as well as the heart. “One minutes.” She keep on pushing it. “Fifty seconds………thirty seconds………ten seconds….” She keep on pushing it. “Time is up!”

Unfortunately, and sad to say that they are not able to save the patient’s life. Everyone are shocked and surprised of what happened. Everyone dropping their tears, but Nadia cried because she can’t imagine of what she did. She does not able to save and help the patient. She wipe her tears and going out from the ICU. She leave everyone who are fixing the patient soulless. Nadia wear off her hand gloves and face mask and throw it away on her way while she is crying too badly.

She’s crying while walking out from the hallway. Silence meet her. Just few are around and of course they are surprised as what happened to Nadia. Nadia keep on walking going to nowhere. She doesn’t know what to do.

But this time she went in the rooftop and burst her emotions. She shouted, scream, and cried while kneeling herself down the ground. Punching her chest too badly.
