Liu Junlan called her homeroom teacher, Zhao, briefly outlining the troubling situation before asking if they could meet in person. Nearby, Jia Dalong's frustration boiled over; why was she dragging her feet at such a critical time? He snatched the phone and spoke urgently into the receiver, “Zhao, I’m Jia Luanluan’s father. This concerns my child's life; I need to see you right away.” The conversation felt awkward—Dalong had never met Zhao—but he didn’t care. Luanluan was his precious daughter, and anything that threatened her was a matter of life and death.
On the other end, Zhao agreed to meet him in her office, noting the crumpled paper balls scattered around her desk, which hinted at the possibility of Luanluan being involved in early romance or unrequited love. “At this age, feelings can be intense and pure,” Zhao advised. “You parents need to guide them, relieve their psychological pressure, and be careful not to scold…”
“But we don’t even know if this is true! Even if it is, who is the boy? What’s their relationship? We need to understand first,” Dalong urged. Zhao thought for a moment before mentioning, “Luanluan is cheerful, outgoing, and well-liked by many boys… There are a couple she’s particularly close with.”
Junlan interjected, “Has she shown any unusual emotions lately? Like being distracted in class or acting downcast?”
“Not at all. Luanluan has been perfectly normal and her grades are stable. If she were struggling, her performance would reflect that,” Zhao assured them.
Dalong shot a glance at Junlan. “Let’s stay focused. Who are the boys Luanluan is close to?”
After a careful assessment, Zhao identified a likely candidate: Guo Hao, a tall, handsome boy who sat behind Luanluan. He was not only wealthy but also excelled in academics, though there was still a slight gap between their grades. Guo Hao was known for his basketball skills, and each time he played, many girls, including Luanluan, would come to cheer him on, captivated by his charm.
There were plenty of girls secretly infatuated with Guo Hao, but he only seemed to have eyes for Luanluan, often turning to her for help with schoolwork. “At this age, it’s not uncommon for feelings to develop between friends,” Zhao remarked thoughtfully.
“But even if they do have feelings for each other, Luanluan shouldn’t be having dark thoughts,” Liu Junlan replied, her anxiety bubbling over. “That boy must have done something to hurt her!”
Jia Dalong clenched his jaw. “How about this, Zhao? Can you give me Guo Hao's parents' contact information? I’ll reach out to them to get the whole story before we decide what to do next.”
Zhao hesitated. “I’m not sure it’s wise to confront them directly. What if there’s a conflict…”
“Don’t worry about that, Zhao,” Junlan interjected. “We’re just trying to solve a problem, not start a fight. This is for the sake of our children, and we’ll keep our heads.”
By the time they returned home from school, it was nearing noon, and Luanluan was still out. The couple managed a quick meal before diving back into the discussion. Dalong had climbed the corporate ladder at a public company, overseeing dozens of employees. Normally consumed by work, he now found it hard to focus, knowing his beloved daughter was in distress. “I can earn back my salary and bonuses, but if something happens to her, what’s the point of all my hard work?”
They strategized on how to approach Guo Hao's parents. Zhao provided them with the mother’s phone number, suggesting that women might communicate better. When the call connected, Junlan introduced herself politely, explaining she was the parent of Guo Hao’s classmate and wanted to discuss their children.
On the other end, Guo’s mother was dismissive, her tone dripping with condescension. “Just tell me over the phone. I’m busy—I’m not one of those housewives who has nothing better to do than monitor their husbands and kids.”
Junlan felt her blood boil but forced herself to remain calm. “This is about your son’s future.”
Guo’s mother snorted. “What a joke! My son’s future is already secured. His father and I have paved the way for him.”
Junlan pressed on, “I suspect your son is involved with my daughter. As parents, we need to intervene before it affects their grades. If they don’t focus, they might not get into high school…”
“Fine,” Guo’s mother cut her off. “Let’s meet at two o’clock this afternoon in the small square west of Jinxiuhua Garden. I only have half an hour.”
Her brash attitude left Junlan feeling uneasy. So what if she had money? Did that give her the right to disrupt someone else’s family? Where was the fairness in that?
At two o'clock in the afternoon, Liu Junlan and Jia Dalong arrived promptly at the meeting spot. Ten minutes later, a flamboyantly dressed, overweight woman strode toward them, her head held so high she seemed ready to topple backward. Junlan instinctively knew this must be Guo Hao's mother.
Before she could approach, the woman shot her an arrogant glance. “You must be that girl’s parent. You’d better keep your daughter in line—she shouldn't go chasing after every boy just because he comes from a good family. My son is going abroad for his studies; if you ruin that, you’ll regret it.”
Beside her, Dalong’s fists tightened in anger. If she weren’t a woman, he would have struck her by now. How dare she belittle his precious daughter like that? Junlan sensed the fury radiating from him and tugged at his arm, signaling him to remain calm. Right now, they needed to focus on finding a solution.
“Guo Hao’s mother,” Dalong said, forcing himself to keep his voice steady, “my daughter has been very upset lately, and we’re worried for her safety. I think it’s important for you to talk to your son and encourage him to concentrate on his studies rather than getting involved in distractions…”
Guo's mother bristled, her voice rising sharply. “Watch your tone! Who’s messing around here? Who’s to say who’s pursuing whom? Tell your daughter to stay away from my son!”
Her blood-red lips twisted in disdain, igniting Dalong's anger further.
He could no longer bear it and yelled at Guo's mother, "What's wrong with your family being rich? I don't care. I'm telling you, little bastard, if you dare to get close to my girl again, be careful or I'll kill him..."
Guo's mother was angry. She waved her strong arms at Guo Hao with a fierce look on her face: "Oh, I have lived for most of my life, and no one has dared to talk to me like this. If you dare to touch my son, I will wipe out your whole family..."
Liu Junlan was afraid that Jia Dalong and Guo's mother would fight, so she stepped forward and stood between them.
Unexpectedly, she was hit on the forehead by Guo's mother's waving thick arm. Liu Junlan cried out in pain.
She was furious. Not only did he insult her daughter, but he even dared to hit her. She couldn't stand it anymore!
Liu Junlan reached out to grab Guo's mother's fat face.
Guo's mother was not the one who would suffer a loss, so she immediately started to fight with Liu Junlan.
Jia Dalong pretended to stop the fight, but he actually grabbed Guo's mother so that Liu Junlan could beat her up.
As a man, he couldn't go up to fight with a woman. In fact, he wanted to scratch Liu Junlan's fat face for her.
But Liu Junlan was too stupid. Even if Jia Dalong was trying to take sides, she didn't get much advantage.
The onlookers called the police, and ten minutes later, the three people were taken to the police station together.
