Watching Tess leave for work felt like watching a piece of my own soul walk away. The porch still felt warm where she’d been standing, the scent of coffee and rain lingering in the air. I didn’t stay on the porch for long. My wolf was settled, but the quiet of the bungalow caused a restlessness nonetheless. He wanted to move. He wanted to reclaim the corners of our life that had been gathering dust while we were fighting a war. I grabbed my keys and headed for the truck. First stop: the lumber yard. The bright orange “government” sign that had signaled the yard’s shut down was gone.
