The Lines We Cross

579 Words
The flashing blue and red lights of the police cruisers cast rhythmic shadows against the bedroom walls of the Knight Tower penthouse. It was past midnight, but neither of them had even thought about sleeping. Elena sat on the edge of the plush leather sofa in the main living area, a soft cashmere blanket draped over her shoulders. She was staring blankly at the marble floor, her mind replaying the terrifying speed with which Alexander had dismantled Marcus. A soft clink of glass broke her trance. Alexander stepped into the room, holding two glasses of ice water. He had swapped his torn tailored shirt for a simple, form-fitting black crewneck that hugged his chest, looking slightly less like a distant corporate king and more like a man who had just crossed a dangerous line. He sat down next to her, leaving just enough space to be polite, but the sheer heat radiating from him filled the gap instantly. He handed her a glass. "The police just confirmed it," Alexander said, his deep baritone unusually quiet. "Marcus is being held without bail at the Manhattan Detention Complex. Between the corporate fraud, skipping bail, and breaking into your apartment with a deadly weapon, he’s looking at a minimum of fifteen years." Elena took a slow sip of water, feeling the cool liquid soothe her raw throat. "Fifteen years. Yesterday morning, I thought he was going to take everything I owned and leave me in the streets. Now... he’s completely gone." She turned her head to look at Alexander, her eyes wide and vulnerable. "Thank you, Alexander. You didn't have to do that. It wasn't in the contract to protect me from a crowbar." Alexander set his glass down on the coffee table with a deliberate snap. He turned his body fully toward her, his dark eyes locking onto hers with a sudden, burning intensity that made her pulse skyrocket. "Forget the contract, Elena," he murmured, his voice dropping into a rough, dangerous whisper. Elena blinked, her heart hammering against her ribs. "What?" "You heard me," Alexander said, leaning in closer until she could smell the faint scent of rain and cedar on his skin. He reached out, his large, warm hand sliding behind the nape of her neck, his thumb caressing her jawline. "When I saw him raise that iron against you, my inheritance didn't cross my mind once. The board didn't matter. The press didn't matter. The only thing that mattered was making sure he never breathed the same air as you again." Elena’s breath hitched, her hands instinctively rising to press against his chest. But she didn't push him away. Instead, her fingers curled slightly into the fabric of his black shirt, feeling the rapid, heavy thudding of his heart matching her own. "Alexander... we can't," she whispered, even as her gaze drifted down to his lips. "If we cross this line, there’s no going back to a business arrangement." "Good," Alexander growled softly. "Because I’m tired of pretending." He closed the remaining distance, his lips capturing hers in a deep, fierce kiss that completely consumed the room. It wasn't the polite, calculated kiss they had shared at the gala for the cameras. This was raw, possessive, and loaded with weeks of buried tension. Elena let out a soft sigh against his mouth, her arms sliding up around his neck as she completely surrendered to the heat. The fake engagement was officially dead. The real game had just begun.
