The Morning After

The smell of rich espresso and fresh rain woke Elena the next morning. For a split second, she forgot where she was, reaching out for the familiar, worn linens of her old apartment. Instead, her fingers brushed against ultra-premium silk sheets. The reality of her new life rushed back in an instant. She was in Alexander Knight’s penthouse. She was officially a billionaire’s contract fiancé. Elena sat up, looking around the massive, sunlit guest suite. True to his word, Alexander’s team had moved her entire life into the east wing overnight while she slept. Her design sketches, fabric samples, and reference books were neatly arranged in the built-in studio corner. It was a flawless transition, executed with terrifying corporate efficiency. After a quick shower, Elena dressed in a sharp, ivory tailoring suit, her own design, squaring her shoulders in the mirror. If she was going to play the role of a powerful man's future wife, she was going to look the part. When she walked downstairs, she found Alexander standing by the massive glass walls, a tablet in one hand and a cup of black coffee in the other. He had already discarded his suit jacket, his crisp white shirt sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing lean, vascular muscles. He turned as her heels clicked against the marble, his dark eyes doing a slow, appreciative sweep from her shoes up to her face. "You look immaculate, Elena," Alexander said, his voice a low, gravelly baritone that vibrated right through the quiet room. "Good. Because our engagement just hit the front page of the Wall Street Journal, and the media is already circling the building." Elena felt a knot form in her stomach. She walked over, looking at the tablet he held out. There it was—a high-resolution photo of them from the gala last night, captioned: “Ice King Melts: Billionaire Alexander Knight Announces Shock Engagement to Designer Elena Vance.” "It's everywhere," Elena whispered, her heart hammering. "Marcus is going to lose his mind." "Marcus is currently dealing with a forensic audit of his entire firm," Alexander replied with a cold, dismissive shrug. "He’s irrelevant now. Our current priority is my family. My uncle, Richard Knight, has just called an emergency board meeting for two o'clock today. He suspects this marriage is a stunt to protect my inheritance, and he's bringing a high-profile reporter to lunch beforehand to grill us." Elena braced herself, leaning against the marble kitchen island. "A grill session. Fantastic. What’s the story, then? How did the ruthless Alexander Knight fall in love with a bankrupt designer?" Alexander walked over, closing the distance between them until he was standing close enough for Elena to see the golden flecks in his dark eyes. He reached out, his long fingers gently tucking a stray lock of hair behind her ear. The touch was light, but it sent a violent jolt of electricity straight down her spine. "We met six months ago at a private gallery opening," Alexander murmured, his voice dropping into a dangerous, seductive rhythm as he rehearsed the lie. "It was love at first sight, but we kept it quiet to protect your privacy while you built your firm. I couldn't bear the thought of the media suffocating you." Elena swallowed hard, her breath hitching at how convincing he sounded. "You're a very good actor, Mr. Knight." "It's not acting, sweetheart. It's preparation," Alexander whispered, his gaze dropping to her lips before flashing back to her eyes. "Richard is going to watch us like a hawk today. If he catches even a single second of hesitation between us, he will use it to tear Knight Enterprises apart. When we walk into that restaurant, you aren't just my partner. You are the love of my life. Understood?" Elena looked into his intense, unreadable eyes and nodded slowly. She had survived Marcus’s betrayal, but surviving the intense, suffocating focus of Alexander Knight was going to be an entirely different challenge.
