Julian's Jealousy (Human, Controlled)

1247 Words
The morning after the company mixer, Elena woke up with the strange feeling that something invisible had changed. Nothing dramatic had happened. No one had confronted her. No secret had been exposed. Yet she could still remember every small moment from the night before. The smile she and Julian had shared across the rooftop. The photograph. The gentle way he had moved a strand of hair from her face without thinking. Sofia's quiet questions. The curious looks from a few coworkers. None of those moments meant much on their own. Together, they had begun telling a story that Elena was still trying to keep hidden. She stood by the kitchen window, watching rain slide slowly down the glass. A cup of coffee rested untouched in her hands while her thoughts wandered back to the mixer. Her phone vibrated. A missed call from Sofia. Elena sighed. She wasn't ready for that conversation yet. She opened her messages instead. Marcus's last message still sat there unanswered. She looked at it for only a second before locking her phone again. For the first time in weeks, Marcus wasn't the loudest voice in her mind. Julian was. She remembered the way he had looked at her before they said goodbye. Kind. Patient. But quietly worried. She opened their conversation and typed a short message. Can we see each other tonight? A few minutes later, his reply appeared. Of course. I'll come over after work. Just reading those words made her breathe a little easier. The rest of the day passed slowly. At work, Elena answered emails, attended meetings, and reviewed sales reports, but she found herself checking the clock more often than usual. Lara noticed. "You seem distracted today." "I'm just tired." "You've been saying that a lot lately." Elena smiled politely and returned to her laptop. She didn't have the energy to explain that tiredness wasn't always something sleep could fix. By the time she arrived home that evening, the rain had become heavier. Instead of ordering food like she normally would, Elena opened her refrigerator. She decided to cook. Nothing complicated. Just pasta, grilled chicken, and a simple salad. As she worked, she realized something. For months, Julian had been the one looking after her. He had brought groceries. Made soup. Remembered her favorite coffee. Waited outside her office. Tonight, she wanted to do something for him. It wasn't much. But it felt like a beginning. A soft knock came just after seven. When Elena opened the door, Julian smiled. "Something smells good." "I cooked." He looked genuinely surprised. "You cooked?" She laughed. "Don't sound so shocked." "I'm impressed." He stepped inside, taking off his wet jacket. For a few moments everything felt normal again. They talked while setting the table. Julian told her about a supplier who had delayed another shipment. Elena shared a funny story about one of her junior sales executives mixing up presentation slides. They both laughed. The laughter felt easy. But underneath it, something remained unsaid. After dinner they carried their plates into the kitchen. Neither of them rushed to leave the silence. Finally, Julian spoke. "I've been thinking about the mixer." Elena stopped drying a plate. "So have I." He leaned lightly against the counter. "I keep replaying the night in my head." She looked at him quietly. "There was a moment after the photographs." He smiled sadly. "You suddenly started avoiding me." Elena lowered her eyes. "I noticed." "I kept wondering if I'd done something wrong." "You didn't." "I know that now." He paused before continuing. "But at the time..." He took a slow breath. "...it felt like you were trying to make sure people didn't connect us." The words weren't angry. They were honest. That somehow hurt even more. Elena placed the dish towel on the counter. "I'm sorry." "I know why you did it." "You do?" "You were scared." She nodded slowly. "I was." Another silence settled between them. The rain tapped softly against the windows. Julian looked toward the living room before speaking again. "I've been trying not to let this get to me." His voice stayed calm. "But sometimes..." He searched for the right words. "...sometimes I wonder if I'm standing outside a door that never really opens." Elena looked at him. "I don't understand." "I know Marcus hurt you." "I know your family worries about the age difference." "I know people talk." He smiled faintly. "I understand all of that." His smile disappeared. "What I don't know..." He looked directly into her eyes. "...is whether you'll ever stop hiding us." The sentence landed gently. But it reached somewhere deep inside her. She hadn't been hiding him because she was ashamed of him. She had been hiding because she was afraid. Afraid of judgment. Afraid of losing Sofia. Afraid of repeating the mistakes of the past. She had never stopped to think how it looked from Julian's side. "I'm sorry," she whispered again. "This isn't about apologizing." "I know." He folded his arms loosely. "I just needed you to know how it feels sometimes." Elena stayed quiet. She remembered every moment over the last few months. Julian waiting outside her office. Julian helping her build shelves. Julian bringing groceries. Julian sitting beside her during the hardest nights. He had never asked for anything in return. Yet she had kept asking him to wait. To understand. To be patient. Without realizing it, she had made patience his burden. Tears gathered in her eyes. "I've been so afraid of getting hurt again..." She swallowed. "...that I never noticed I was hurting you." Julian didn't answer immediately. He simply listened. That was who he was. "I never wanted you to feel hidden." "I know." "I never wanted you to think I was choosing fear over you." "I know." She looked at him. "But I think that's exactly what I've been doing." Julian walked a little closer. Not too close. Just enough for her to know he was there. "I'm not asking you to decide everything today." "I'm not asking you to tell the whole world." He smiled gently. "I just don't want fear to make every decision for us." Elena nodded. For the first time, those words didn't feel like pressure. They felt like truth. They moved into the living room with fresh cups of tea. The conversation became lighter. Julian talked about his business plans. Elena shared ideas for an upcoming client project. The tension hadn't disappeared. But it had changed. Instead of standing between them, it now sat beside them. Something they could face together. Hours later, Julian stood by the front door. "I should let you rest." She nodded. "Thank you for coming." "Thank you for inviting me." He opened the door and stepped outside. Halfway to his car, he turned around. Their eyes met. He lifted one hand in a small wave. Elena smiled and waved back. As she closed the door, she realized something had quietly shifted. For months, she had been afraid that Julian might leave. Tonight, for the first time, she understood something else. He had been just as afraid of losing her. Love wasn't asking either of them to be perfect. It was asking them to stop letting fear speak louder than honesty. Outside, the rain continued to fall. Inside, Elena stood by the window, watching Julian's car disappear into the night. The storm wasn't over. But for the first time, it felt like they were standing on the same side of it.
