Work Pressure Squeezes Elena

1333 Words
The week after her argument with Julian felt different. Not because everything was suddenly fixed. It wasn’t. Elena knew one conversation could not erase years of fear. She knew one apology could not magically repair everything Marcus had broken. Healing was not that simple. But something had changed. For the first time, Elena stopped pretending that she was fine. She had finally admitted the truth. She was scared. Scared of being hurt again. Scared of trusting someone. Scared that something good could disappear the same way everything else did. And Julian understood. He did not suddenly become more demanding. He did not ask for constant reassurance. He did not make her prove that she cared. He simply stayed. His messages were still the same. Hope your meeting goes well today. Don’t forget to eat. The weather looks bad. Take an umbrella. Small things. Normal things. The kind of things that slowly reminded Elena that love did not always have to feel like a storm. Sometimes it could feel like peace. But even with Julian trying to give her peace, life did not slow down. Monday morning arrived with a problem waiting for her. A major client presentation. One of the biggest accounts her company had been chasing for months. The type of meeting that could change her position in the company. The type of opportunity she had worked years for. Elena stood in front of the mirror that morning adjusting her blazer. She looked confident. Professional. Ready. That was what everyone saw. Nobody saw the tiredness behind her eyes. Nobody saw the thoughts that kept running through her mind. Nobody knew that before sleeping last night, she had stared at Marcus’s last message for almost ten minutes. Can we really not talk? I think you owe it to what we had. She had not replied. But the words stayed. That was the problem. Marcus did not need to be physically present anymore. He had already learned how to take up space in her mind. At work, Elena walked into the meeting room with the same confidence everyone expected from her. Her coworkers looked at her. The client representatives looked at her. She smiled. She spoke clearly. She answered every question. She handled every challenge. The Elena everyone knew appeared. The strong one. The woman who always had a solution. The woman who could walk into pressure and make it look easy. By the end of the presentation, the client smiled. “This was impressive, Elena.” She nodded. “Thank you.” The team congratulated her afterward. Lara hugged her. “I swear, I don’t know how you do it.” Elena smiled. “Practice.” But inside, she felt empty. Because nobody saw what happened when the performance ended. Nobody saw how exhausted she was from constantly holding herself together. Nobody saw that being strong all the time was becoming tiring. Later that afternoon, her phone rang. Her mother. Elena stared at the screen. For a moment, she considered ignoring it. But she answered. “Hi, Mom.” “Hello, dear.” Her mother’s voice sounded warm. But Elena already knew. There was always something behind that tone. “How are you?” “I’m fine.” A pause. “You sound tired.” “I’m just busy.” Her mother sighed. “You always say that.” Elena closed her eyes. Not today. Not after everything. “Mom…” “I’m not trying to pressure you.” Elena almost laughed. Because every conversation started that way. “But you know we worry.” “I know.” “You work so hard.” “I know.” “But life is not only work, Elena.” The words hit harder than her mother intended. Because they sounded too close to everything Marcus had said. You care more about your career than anything else. You push people away. You are too focused on yourself. Her grip tightened around her phone. “I have to go, Mom.” She ended the call before her voice could break. For several minutes, she sat alone in her office. The same question returned. Was she the problem? Was she too independent? Too focused? Too difficult to love? She hated that Marcus had planted those thoughts so deeply. A few hours later, Elena walked out of the office. She expected to go home. She expected a quiet evening. But outside the building, she saw Julian. Standing there. Holding two cups of coffee. Her heart immediately softened. “You’re here.” He smiled. “I figured you would need this.” He handed her a cup. She looked down. Her favorite order. Of course. “You remembered.” Julian looked surprised. “You say that like I forget everything else.” A small laugh escaped her. The first real one that day. They walked slowly together. For a while, neither spoke. The city moved around them. People rushing home. Cars passing. Lights turning on in buildings. Finally Julian looked at her. “Big day?” She smiled slightly. “You already know.” “Lara told Sofia.” Elena laughed. “Of course she did.” “She said you were amazing.” Elena looked down at her coffee. “I did well.” Julian noticed her tone. “But?” She sighed. “But I don’t know why doing well never feels enough.” The words surprised her. Because she had never said them out loud. Julian stayed quiet. Letting her continue. “I spent years trying to prove myself.” She looked ahead. “To my company.” “To my family.” “To Marcus.” Her voice became softer. “Even to myself.” Julian listened. No interruption. No fixing. “I thought if I became successful enough, nobody could make me feel small.” She looked at him. “But somehow I still feel like I have something to prove.” Julian stopped walking. “Elena.” She looked at him. “Your worth is not something you earn after a good presentation.” The words were simple. But they reached somewhere deep. “You were valuable before you got the promotion.” “You were valuable before people praised your work.” “You were valuable before Marcus chose to hurt you.” Her eyes became emotional. Because nobody had ever said it that way. Julian continued. “I love that you are ambitious.” A small smile appeared on his face. “I love that you care about your career.” “But I don’t want you to believe that you only deserve love when you are perfect.” Elena looked away. Because that was exactly what she did. She worked harder when she was hurting. She achieved more when she felt rejected. She built walls and called them strength. “I’m trying,” she whispered. Julian nodded. “I know.” They continued walking. This time, Elena felt lighter. Not because all her problems disappeared. They didn’t. Marcus was still there. Her family was still complicated. Her fears were still real. But for once, she did not feel like she had to carry everything alone. That night, Elena returned home and placed her work bag down. She looked at the shelves Julian helped build. She smiled slightly. Then she checked her phone. Another message from Marcus. I hope you’re doing okay. She stared at it. Before, that message would have controlled her whole night. Now she simply looked at it. Then turned the phone face down. For the first time, she realized something. The past could knock. But she did not always have to open the door. She made tea. Sat on her couch. And allowed herself to rest. Not as a manager. Not as the woman everyone expected her to be. Just Elena. A woman still healing. A woman still learning. A woman slowly understanding that she did not have to earn love. She was already worthy of it.
