Sofia Notices the Shift

1547 Words
Saturday afternoon arrived quietly. Elena stood in her apartment folding laundry while soft music played from her phone. Sunlight filtered through the curtains, making the living room feel warm and peaceful. For the first time in a long while, weekends no longer felt empty. A small smile appeared on her face as she folded one of her sweaters. Without meaning to, she thought about Julian. She thought about the shelf they built together. The coffee he brought her after long workdays. The way he always remembered small things nobody else noticed. The way he somehow knew when she was struggling before she even said a word. Her phone suddenly rang. The screen lit up. Sofia. Elena immediately answered. "Hey." "Hey yourself," Sofia laughed. "Are you alive? Or has work completely kidn*pped you?" Elena smiled. "Barely surviving." "Good. Then you can survive one coffee date." Elena laughed softly. "When?" "This afternoon." "Today?" "Yes, today. Long overdue." Elena hesitated. "Sure." There was a brief pause. Then Sofia added casually, "Julian mentioned you two have been spending a lot of time together lately." Elena's heart skipped. Only for a second. But it happened. "Not that much," she said quickly. "Mhm." Sofia's voice sounded playful. But Elena suddenly felt nervous. "The usual café?" Sofia asked. "Sure." A few hours later Elena arrived at the café. Rain tapped softly against the windows outside. The familiar smell of coffee wrapped around the room. She immediately spotted Sofia sitting near the corner. Wedding magazines covered part of the table. Sofia looked happy. Excited. Glowing. The kind of glow that came from planning a future with someone you loved. For a moment Elena felt happy for her. Then she felt something else. Envy. Not because Sofia was getting married. But because Sofia never had to question whether her love would be accepted. Sofia waved. Elena sat down. The conversation started normally. Wedding plans. Work. Family gossip. Funny stories. For almost thirty minutes, everything felt comfortable. Then Sofia took a sip of her latte and smiled. "So." Elena immediately knew. Trouble. "So?" she asked carefully. Sofia leaned back. "My little brother." There it was. Elena's stomach tightened. "What about him?" "He talks about you a lot." Elena nearly dropped her cup. "What?" Sofia laughed. "Relax." "I'm relaxed." "You absolutely are not." Elena looked away. Sofia studied her carefully. "You know," Sofia said, "I haven't seen him this settled since he came back." Elena forced a smile. "He's adjusting well." "Maybe." Sofia tilted her head. "But I think you're helping." The words sounded innocent. Yet they made Elena nervous. Very nervous. She wrapped both hands around her coffee mug. Using it like a shield. "He's been a good friend." "Friend." Sofia repeated the word slowly. Elena hated how suspicious that sounded. "Yes." Sofia nodded. Then became quiet. Too quiet. Elena knew that look. Sofia was observing. Watching. Putting pieces together. "You seem happier lately," Sofia finally said. Elena stared at her coffee. "I'm trying." "No." Sofia smiled. "It's more than that." Elena looked up. "What do you mean?" "You laugh more." Sofia's voice softened. "You don't look like you're carrying the whole world anymore." Elena swallowed. Because Julian was a huge reason for that. But she couldn't say it. Not here. Not yet. Sofia continued. "And honestly? I'm glad." Elena smiled softly. "So am I." The conversation shifted again. For a while. But eventually Sofia returned to the subject. Carefully. Almost casually. "Just be careful." Elena froze slightly. "Why?" Sofia shrugged. "Julian is still figuring things out." The words sounded harmless. Yet Elena felt them. Every one of them. "He's younger too." There it was. The age difference. Again. Always the age difference. "People can misunderstand things." Elena forced a smile. "It's just friendship." The lie came out easier than she expected. That scared her. Because it was no longer completely true. Sofia nodded. But Elena wasn't sure she believed her. The rest of the coffee felt different. Every time Julian's name came up, Elena carefully edited the truth. She talked about helping each other. She talked about work. She talked about friendship. But she left out the important parts. She left out the texts every morning. She left out the late-night conversations. She left out the way her heart sped up whenever his name appeared on her phone. She left out the fact that he had become part of her daily life. And every omission felt like a lie. When they finally left the café, Elena felt exhausted. Not because of Sofia. But because hiding was becoming harder. Much harder. That evening her phone buzzed. Julian. How did coffee with Sofia go? Elena stared at the screen. Her fingers hovered above the keyboard. She started typing. She noticed things. Delete. She asked questions. Delete. I think she's suspicious. Delete. Finally she sent: Good. We talked about wedding stuff. A few seconds later he replied. Glad it went well. Simple. Safe. Yet guilt twisted inside her chest. Because she had hidden the truth from him too. The next few days felt strange. At work, Elena caught herself smiling while remembering the time Julian burned onions in her kitchen. Lara noticed immediately. "There it is." Elena looked up. "What?" "That smile." Lara pointed. "You keep doing that." Elena frowned. "Doing what?" "Smiling at absolutely nothing." Heat rushed into Elena's cheeks. "It's not nothing." Lara's eyes widened dramatically. "Oh my God." Elena groaned. "Stop." "There is someone." "There isn't." "There definitely is." Elena quickly returned to her work. But Lara's words followed her all day. Because maybe there was someone. Maybe there had been someone for a while now. She just wasn't brave enough to admit it. Two days later Sofia called again. Elena answered while walking out of work. "Hey." Sofia sounded casual. Too casual. "How's your week?" "Busy." "Same." A pause followed. Then Sofia spoke again. "Julian seems really settled around you." Elena stopped walking. Her chest tightened. "What do you mean?" "I don't know." Sofia laughed lightly. "He just seems happier." Elena swallowed. "He has friends." "Not like this." Another pause. Then Sofia asked softly, "Everything okay?" Elena knew what Sofia was really asking. And for the first time, she lied without hesitation. "Everything is fine." The guilt hit immediately. Heavy. Painful. Because Sofia had stood beside her after Marcus. Sofia had listened to her cry. Sofia had helped her survive the worst heartbreak of her life. Now Elena was hiding something from her. Something important. That night Julian arrived with takeout. He immediately noticed something was wrong. "You okay?" Elena nodded. "Just tired." Julian looked unconvinced. But he didn't push. They ate dinner on the couch while a movie played quietly in the background. Neither of them paid much attention to it. Elena kept thinking about Sofia. About lies. About family pressure. About everything that could go wrong. At one point their shoulders touched. Neither moved away. The contact was small. Yet Elena felt it instantly. The warmth. The comfort. The longing. Dangerous feelings. Beautiful feelings. Complicated feelings. Julian glanced at her. His expression softened. But neither said anything. The silence between them felt full. Like a conversation happening without words. Eventually the movie ended. The apartment grew quiet. Julian stood up slowly. "I should head home." Elena nodded. Part of her wanted him to stay. Part of her wanted him to leave before she said something reckless. She walked him to the door. The familiar tension returned immediately. The same tension that always appeared when they were alone. The same tension neither of them knew how to cross. Julian looked at her carefully. "You've been distant this week." Elena's heart jumped. "I have?" "A little." His voice stayed gentle. Not accusing. Just honest. She looked down. "Sorry." "You don't have to apologize." He paused. Then added quietly, "Just don't shut me out." The words hit her harder than he realized. Because shutting him out was exactly what she had been trying to do. Not because she wanted to. Because she was scared. Scared of Sofia noticing. Scared of her family. Scared of the age difference. Scared of how much she already cared. Julian's eyes stayed on hers. Steady. Patient. Waiting. Elena wanted to tell him everything. How confused she felt. How guilty she felt. How much she thought about him. How much she wanted him around. Instead she simply nodded. "I'm trying." A faint smile appeared on his face. "I know." The moment stretched between them. Warm. Quiet. Dangerously intimate. Then Julian finally stepped outside. "Goodnight, Elena." "Goodnight." The door closed. Silence filled the apartment. Elena stood there for several seconds. Alone. Thinking. Feeling. Her chest ached. Because something had changed. The relationship was no longer hidden inside comfortable routines and small moments. Now other people were starting to notice. Sofia noticed. Lara noticed. Sooner or later everyone would notice. And once that happened, there would be consequences. Elena slowly leaned her forehead against the door. "This is getting complicated," she whispered. But deep down she already knew. It wasn't becoming complicated. It already was. And despite all the fear growing inside her, one truth had become impossible to ignore. She was falling in love with Julian. And for the first time, that truth scared her almost as much as it made her happy.
