Thomas you need to marry her ''

my head snaps towards him at this and judging by the looks on everyone's faces I can see that this statement shocks all of them as well. Why on earth is this guy bringing up marriage at a time like this. Like what on earth is going through his head? I'm about to say something but Damien cuts me off and goes on to explain his point.

“If you marry her you guys will become one and no one here will be able to kill her because that will then basically mean she is one of us”

I look over at Thomas who is just standing there, obviously deep in thought. His arms are folded and his one hand is rubbing his chin as he looks down at the ground. He then suddenly snaps his attention over to me and looks straight into my eyes, his expression still serious and his eyes

deep in concentration. my stomach for some unknown reason does a little flip. I can feel my face flush and I look down to try and save myself from embarrassment.

“OK that makes sense but why must I specifically be the one to marry her” Thomas says and I look up to see he is looking at Damien as he says this.

Damien smirks at this and tries not to

laugh before responding.

“Because it is your fault that she is stuck here. The least you can do is help prevent her from getting killed” he pauses a moment and his expression turns more serious. “You said so yourself, it is only a matter of time before someone finds out she is not from here and they will for sure inform the council or authorities. We have no idea when we will be able to get Dawn back home and the only way we know we can keep her safe is if she marries one of us.”

I really don't understand how marrying one of them will prevent me from getting killed. It just makes no

sense.

“Ok but how on earth will marrying Thom..” I stop myself before I say his full name. Maybe I shouldn't just assume he will be the one I marry “one of you” I correct myself “prevent me from being killed?” To my surprise Aurora speaks up then.

“In our world marriage is not taken lightly. Marriage is seen as something that makes two people one. Yes physically you remain two separate people but spiritually you become one entity and that is something taken seriously here. Marriage allows you to have a person who is yours and you are theirs and you two together help each other in every aspect of life. If you marry Thomas you will be seen as a part of him and therefore a part of this world which means the people here will have no means to kill you. They wouldn't want to kill you because by law that would be a crime as they will basically be murdering one of their own ”

I stand there silently just taking in everything Aurora has said. Like it all kind of makes sense but im only 19 and they expect me to just simply get married. Well then again it will only be a temporary thing and just until they help me get back to my world. Still this can’t seriously be the only way to ensure I don't get killed. I'm surprised they are even thinking of going this far to help me. Like why haven't they killed me themselves? I realize that I probably shouldn't trust any of them. I'm not sure if I really know their true motives.

“Why are you guys willing to go this far to help me? Also if you guys are such skilled fighters couldn't you just protect me from anyone trying to kill me?” Thomas is the one who replies to this.

“You see Dawn, if we intervene and try to stop anyone from killing you, which will likely be the council's authorities, we will be turning on our own. We will be taking the lives of our own people who are simply doing what they have been commanded to do. Also if we take the lives of our own, the council will stop at nothing to take us down for our crimes. The reason I am willing to

marry you is because this was my mistake and so you shouldn’t be the one paying for it”

My heart skips a beat at that. Did he basically just propose to me? Wait but no just a second ago he was asking why he had to be the one to marry me.

“Oh” is all I say to this. I really don’t know how else to reply to what he said.
