Ripples In Still Water

1641 Words
Hana’s usual morning routine—waking up early, preparing breakfast, and walking to school alone—was all the same. Yet, today, everything felt different. The world seemed sharper, more vivid, as if the colors had been dialed up a notch overnight. The sky was a deeper shade of blue, the chirping of birds crisper, and the school gates loomed larger, more imposing than ever. She couldn’t shake the nervous energy that had taken residence in her chest since her study session with Ryuji. It was a strange, fluttery feeling that made her both excited and uneasy. She tried to push it down as she walked into Sakuragaoka High, but it refused to be ignored. As Hana reached her classroom, she hesitated at the door, taking a deep breath to steady herself. Her eyes darted to Ryuji’s desk out of habit, only to find it empty. A small pang of disappointment echoed in her chest, but she quickly pushed it aside, scolding herself for the foolishness of it. She made her way to her seat, trying to blend into the background like she always did, but something felt off. She noticed more eyes on her today, whispers trailing her every move. It was subtle, but it was there, like a ripple spreading across still water. Yumi was already at her desk, leaning back in her chair with an expression that Hana couldn’t quite decipher. “Morning, Hana,” she said, her tone light but with an undercurrent of curiosity. “You okay? You look a bit… off.” Hana shook her head, forcing a smile. “I’m fine. Just didn’t sleep well.” Yumi studied her for a moment longer before nodding. “Alright, if you say so.” She glanced around the classroom, then leaned in closer, lowering her voice. “So, how was it? Your study session with Mr. Popular?” Hana felt her face heat up, the memory of yesterday’s meeting flashing through her mind. “It was… fine. We got a lot done.” “Fine, huh?” Yumi teased, her eyes twinkling with mischief. “Come on, Hana. I need details. Was it awkward? Was he nice? Did he—” “It was just a study session, Yumi,” Hana cut in, her voice firmer than she intended. “Nothing special.” Yumi blinked at the sharpness in Hana’s tone, her teasing grin fading slightly. “Okay, okay. I’m just curious. I mean, it’s not every day you see someone like Ryuji Takeda hanging out with, well… you know.” Hana knew what Yumi meant, even if she didn’t say it out loud. Someone like him, with someone like her. It was an odd pairing, and everyone at school seemed to think so too. “I know,” Hana replied, her voice softer now. “But it’s really just a school project.” Yumi nodded, though she didn’t look entirely convinced. “If you say so. But if anything happens, you know I’m here, right?” “Of course,” Hana said, offering a small smile of gratitude. Yumi had always been there for her, her one constant in a world that often felt cold and distant. Just then, the classroom door slid open, and Ryuji stepped in, immediately drawing the attention of everyone inside. He walked with that easy confidence Hana had come to recognize, his presence commanding without trying. His gaze scanned the room, and for a brief moment, their eyes met. He smiled—a small, warm smile meant just for her—and Hana felt her heart skip a beat. He made his way to his seat, greeting a few classmates along the way. Hana noticed how the others responded to him, the way they gravitated toward his charisma. He was like a sun, and everyone else were planets caught in his orbit. As the teacher entered and the class settled down, Hana tried to focus on the lesson, but her mind kept wandering back to Ryuji. She found herself glancing in his direction more than once, each time quickly looking away when she realized what she was doing. When lunchtime arrived, Hana was relieved to escape the confines of the classroom. She made her way to the school’s rooftop, her usual sanctuary where she could eat in peace. The breeze was gentle today, and she welcomed the cool air against her skin as she unpacked her lunch. She was halfway through her meal when the door to the rooftop creaked open. Hana looked up, expecting to see Yumi, but instead, she found Ryuji standing there, his tall frame silhouetted against the light. “Mind if I join you?” he asked, holding up his lunch bag with a grin that was almost sheepish. Hana’s heart leaped in her chest, caught off guard by his presence. She nodded slowly, gesturing to the empty spot beside her. “Sure.” Ryuji walked over and sat down, the silence between them stretching out as he unpacked his lunch. Hana watched him out of the corner of her eye, wondering why he had sought her out. The rooftop was her private space, a place where she could escape the chaos of school, but now, with him here, it felt different—charged with an energy she didn’t know how to handle. “Nice spot you’ve got here,” Ryuji said after a moment, breaking the silence. He looked out over the school grounds, taking in the view. “Quiet. Peaceful.” Hana nodded, her fingers fiddling with the edge of her bento box. “Yeah, it is. I like the quiet.” “Me too,” Ryuji said, surprising her. “You wouldn’t think it, but I do.” Hana looked at him, curiosity piqued. “Really? You always seem… comfortable around people.” Ryuji laughed softly, though there was a hint of something else beneath the surface—something darker. “Comfortable, maybe. But that doesn’t mean I always like it. Sometimes it’s nice to just… get away from it all, you know?” Hana did know. It was why she came up here every day, why she preferred the solitude of the library over the bustling cafeteria. But hearing Ryuji say it, hearing that he understood, made her see him in a new light. “Why did you come here, Ryuji?” she asked before she could stop herself. Her voice was soft, almost tentative, as if she were afraid of the answer. Ryuji turned to look at her, his eyes meeting hers with a seriousness that took her by surprise. “I wanted to see you.” Hana’s breath caught in her throat, her mind racing to make sense of his words. “Why?” “Because…” Ryuji hesitated, searching for the right words. “Because I like spending time with you, Hana. You’re different. You’re not like everyone else.” Hana felt a strange mixture of emotions at his words—flattered, confused, and scared all at once. “Different how?” “You’re real,” Ryuji said, his voice steady and sincere. “You don’t put on a show, don’t pretend to be someone you’re not. You’re just… you. And I like that.” Hana didn’t know what to say, her mind swirling with thoughts and emotions she couldn’t quite grasp. No one had ever said something like that to her before, and it left her feeling exposed, vulnerable. “I don’t know if that’s a good thing,” she finally whispered, her gaze dropping to her hands. “It is,” Ryuji insisted, his tone firm but gentle. “Trust me, it is.” They fell into a comfortable silence after that, each lost in their own thoughts as they finished their lunch. Hana found herself sneaking glances at Ryuji, trying to understand this boy who had somehow entered her world and turned it upside down. When the bell rang, signaling the end of lunch, Ryuji stood up and stretched, his smile returning. “Thanks for letting me crash your spot, Hana. Maybe we can do this again sometime?” Hana nodded, though she wasn’t sure if she was ready for that just yet. “Yeah, maybe.” Ryuji gave her one last smile before heading back down the stairs, leaving Hana alone once more. But the solitude felt different now, not as comforting as it once was. She couldn’t stop thinking about his words, about the way he had looked at her, seen her. For the rest of the day, Hana moved through her classes in a daze, her mind constantly drifting back to that rooftop conversation. She knew her life was changing, that something was happening between her and Ryuji that she couldn’t quite define. As the final bell rang and the students began to leave, Hana found herself lingering in the classroom, her thoughts still tangled. She didn’t notice Reina Aoyama approaching until the girl was standing right in front of her desk, her arms crossed and a cold smirk on her face. “So,” Reina drawled, her tone dripping with condescension. “You and Ryuji, huh? I didn’t realize he was into… charity cases.” Hana flinched at the venom in Reina’s voice, her heart sinking. She had been dreading this moment, knowing that Ryuji’s attention would eventually draw unwanted eyes her way. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Hana said quietly, trying to keep her voice steady. Reina’s smirk widened, clearly enjoying Hana’s discomfort. “Oh, come on, Hana. Don’t play dumb. Everyone’s noticed how he’s been hanging around you. But let’s be real—he’s way out of your league. It’s just a matter of time before he gets fed up with you and leaves you like nothing, you trash!” Hana's eye's widened upon hearing this.
