The next day, Hana Kuroda found herself in unfamiliar territory—walking beside Ryuji Takeda as they headed to their first study session together. It still didn’t seem real. Even after a night of tossing and turning, replaying their conversation over and over in her mind, she couldn’t make sense of it. Why had he chosen her, of all people, to be his partner?
They made their way down the corridor, the buzz of the other students filling the air around them. Hana kept her eyes trained on the floor, aware of the curious glances being thrown their way. She wasn’t used to this much attention and felt the weight of it pressing down on her like a heavy blanket.
Ryuji, on the other hand, seemed completely at ease, his usual smile firmly in place as he chatted casually about the project.
“So, I was thinking,” he said, his voice breaking through Hana’s thoughts, “we could meet at the library after school today and start planning things out. It’d be good to get a head start, don’t you think?”
Hana nodded, her throat tight with nerves. “Yeah, that sounds good.”
They reached their classroom, and as they walked in together, the chatter of their classmates momentarily quieted, eyes following them with a mix of curiosity and surprise. Hana could feel her cheeks burning under their scrutiny. She hurried to her desk, dropping into her seat and opening her notebook as if it could shield her from the attention.
Ryuji, however, didn’t seem fazed at all. He gave a quick wave to a group of boys who called out to him before heading to his seat, which was just a few rows ahead of hers. Hana watched him for a moment, wondering how he managed to be so confident, so unaffected by what others thought.
Her thoughts were interrupted by the arrival of Yumi Saito, who plopped down into the seat next to her with an exaggerated sigh.
“Hana,” Yumi whispered, leaning in conspiratorially. “What’s going on? I saw you walking in with Ryuji Takeda. Are you two… like, a thing now?”
Hana’s eyes widened in horror at the suggestion. “No! We’re just partners for the class project.”
Yumi raised an eyebrow, clearly unconvinced. “Just partners, huh? Because it looked like you two were getting pretty cozy.”
Hana felt a wave of embarrassment wash over her. “It’s not like that,” she insisted, her voice barely above a whisper. “He asked me to be his partner, that’s all.”
Yumi glanced over at Ryuji, who was now engaged in a conversation with the boy sitting next to him. “Well, whatever it is, you should be careful, Hana. He’s popular, and that kind of attention… it can be overwhelming. I don’t want you to get hurt.”
Hana appreciated Yumi’s concern, but she wasn’t sure what to say. She hadn’t asked for this attention, hadn’t wanted it, but now that it was happening, she wasn’t sure how to handle it.
“I’ll be fine,” Hana said softly, though she wasn’t entirely sure if she believed it herself.
The rest of the school day passed in a blur, with Hana barely able to focus on her classes. Her mind kept drifting back to the library, to the thought of spending more time with Ryuji, just the two of them. The idea filled her with both excitement and dread, a strange combination of emotions she wasn’t used to feeling.
When the final bell rang, Hana gathered her things and made her way to the library, her heart pounding in her chest. As she entered the familiar space, the scent of old books and polished wood enveloped her, offering a small measure of comfort.
Ryuji was already there, sitting at a table near the back, his textbooks spread out in front of him. He looked up as she approached, offering her a warm smile that made her stomach flip in an unfamiliar way.
“Hey, Hana,” he greeted her, gesturing to the seat across from him. “Glad you could make it.”
Hana sat down, her fingers fumbling slightly as she pulled out her notebook. “Sorry, I hope I didn’t keep you waiting.”
“Nah, I just got here myself,” Ryuji said, waving off her apology. “So, I was thinking we could start by brainstorming some ideas for the project. Do you have any thoughts on what we should do?”
Hana hesitated, unsure of how to voice her ideas. She had a few concepts in mind, but the fear of sounding stupid held her back. She wasn’t used to sharing her thoughts with others, especially not with someone as popular as Ryuji.
Seeing her hesitation, Ryuji leaned forward slightly, his expression encouraging. “It’s okay, Hana. Whatever you’re thinking, just say it. There’s no wrong answer here.”
Taking a deep breath, Hana nodded and opened her notebook to a page where she had jotted down some notes. “I was thinking… maybe we could do something with art. Like, a presentation that combines visual elements with whatever the topic is. It could be something unique, something that stands out.”
Ryuji’s eyes lit up as he listened, clearly intrigued by the idea. “That sounds really cool. You’re really into art, right? It makes sense that you’d want to incorporate that into the project.”
Hana nodded, feeling a small spark of confidence flicker inside her. “Yeah, I’ve always loved drawing and creating things. It’s… it’s how I express myself, I guess.”
Ryuji smiled, his gaze softening. “That’s awesome, Hana. I think it’s great that you have something you’re so passionate about. We should definitely go with your idea—I’m sure it’ll be amazing.”
Hana felt a warmth spread through her at his words, a feeling of validation that she wasn’t used to. Most people didn’t take her seriously, didn’t care about what she had to say, but Ryuji… he was different. He listened, really listened, and that made her feel something she hadn’t felt in a long time—seen.
As they began discussing the details of the project, Hana found herself relaxing more, the initial tension easing away as they worked together. Ryuji was easy to talk to, his friendly demeanor putting her at ease. He didn’t push her to speak more than she was comfortable with, didn’t make her feel like she had to be someone she wasn’t.
As they continued to brainstorm, Hana learned more about Ryuji as well. He shared bits and pieces about his life—his family, his previous school, and how different things were now that he had transferred to Sakuragaoka. Hana listened intently, fascinated by the glimpse into his world, a world so different from her own.
“I guess it’s been an adjustment,” Ryuji said, his tone thoughtful as he leaned back in his chair. “It’s hard to leave behind everything you know and start over somewhere new. But… it’s also been kind of nice, in a way. A fresh start.”
Hana nodded, understanding more than he realized. “Sometimes, a fresh start is what you need.”
Ryuji looked at her, his expression unreadable for a moment before he smiled. “Yeah, I think you’re right.”
They continued working for the next hour, their conversation flowing easily as they developed their ideas for the project. Hana found herself enjoying the time they spent together, the way Ryuji made her feel comfortable in her own skin, something she hadn’t experienced in a long time.
As the afternoon light began to fade, casting long shadows across the library, Ryuji glanced at the clock and sighed. “I guess we should wrap up for today. But I think we’ve made some good progress.”
Hana nodded, a bit reluctant to see their study session come to an end. “Yeah, I think we have.”
Ryuji began packing up his things, but before he stood up, he looked at Hana, his expression serious. “Hey, Hana… thanks for today. I know this is just a school project, but I’ve really enjoyed working with you.”
Hana felt a strange mixture of emotions swirl inside her—gratitude, uncertainty, and something else she couldn’t quite name. “I’ve enjoyed it too,” she said softly, her voice barely above a whisper.
Ryuji smiled, his eyes warm and sincere. “I’m glad. I’ll see you tomorrow, okay?”
Hana nodded, watching as he left the library, his footsteps echoing softly in the quiet space. As the door closed behind him, Hana sat there for a moment, her heart still racing from the intensity of their time together.
For the first time in a long time, Hana Kuroda didn’t feel invisible. And that scared her more than anything else.
