Alexander’s jaw tightened into stone. Before Julian could take another step toward Glory, two large men in dark suits materialized silently on either side of him, cutting off his path and physically guiding him back into the crowded ballroom.
"Ignore him," Alexander said softly, his voice clipping and laced with edge as he escorted Glory past the onlookers. "Julian thrives on chaos."
"Who was he talking about?" Glory whispered, her heart beating against her ribs as they manoeuvred through the sea of tuxedos and champagne flutes. "Who was the last girl?"
Alexander didn't answer. His fingers tightened against her lower back, a firm, non-verbal command to drop the subject. For the rest of the evening, Glory played her part flawlessly. She stood by his side, smiled on cue, and endured the curious, judging stares of the city's highest elite. Yet beneath the glittering chandelier light, the tension between them stretched tauter with every passing hour—a dangerous, silent current that grew thicker with every lingering glance and light touch.
By the time the Maybach pulled into the private underground garage of Alexander’s penthouse, the silence inside the car was suffocating.
The elevator ride up to the top floor was agonizingly slow. The moment the doors slid open into the dark, quiet penthouse, Glory turned to him, the pent-up frustration and anxiety of the night bubbling over.
"You can't just order me around and expect me not to ask questions," Glory said, her voice echoing off the marble floor as she kicked off her high heels. "If I'm supposed to be your public companion, I deserve to know what I'm walking into. Who was Julian?"
Alexander tossed his suit jacket onto a leather couch and unbuttoned the top two buttons of his collar. He turned to face her, his grey eyes shadowed, dark, and dangerous.
"Julian is a ghost from a past you don't need to concern yourself with," Alexander said, his voice low as he stepped toward her. "Your only concern is what happens inside these walls. With me."
"I signed a contract for Hope's life, not to be kept completely in the dark!" Glory snapped, taking a step forward to match his aggression, her eyes flashing with defiance.
Alexander closed the remaining distance between them in a heartbeat.
He grabbed her waist, pulling her flush against his chest. Glory’s breath caught in her throat as her hands instinctively landed against his muscular shoulders. The dark, intense heat radiating off him was overwhelming, wiping away every coherent thought in her head.
"You talk too much when you're defensive," Alexander murmured, his voice dropping to a gravelly whisper. His eyes dropped to her lips.
"Alexander—"
He cut her off, pressing his lips to hers in an urgent, bruising kiss.
A sharp gasp escaped Glory, but instead of pulling away, her fingers tangled into the soft hair at the nape of his neck. The kiss wasn't gentle; it was demanding, possessive, and electric, burning away the boundary between employer and companion. The cold, transactional reality of their deal evaporated into pure, raw heat.
Alexander let out a low groan, his hands sliding down her back to pull her impossibly closer, deepening the kiss until Glory’s knees felt weak. He lifted her seamlessly, setting her onto the edge of the nearby marble console table without breaking the searing contact of their mouths.
"Tell me to stop," Alexander rasped against her lips, his breath hot against her skin as his hands slid up the back of her silk dress, finding the zipper. "Tell me right now, Glory, and I walk away."
Glory looked up into his stormy grey eyes, her chest heaving, her core aching with a fiery need she had never experienced before. She knew she should say no. She knew this would ruin whatever emotional armour she had left.
Instead, Glory reached up, gripped his collar, and pulled him back down to her. "Don't stop."
The rest of the night dissolved into a blur of raw passion and breathless intensity. In his dimly lit master suite, Alexander took his time exploring every inch of her, unravelling her defences with a fierce, possessive tenderness that shattered Glory’s expectations. What was supposed to be a cold obligation turned into a fiery storm of touch, desperate whispers, and overwhelming sensation that left them both breathless and spent beneath the dark silk sheets.
Morning light filtered through the floor-to-ceiling windows, casting long gold streaks across the bed.
Glory opened her eyes slowly, her body aching with a lingering, deep warmth. She turned her head on the pillow.
The space beside her was empty. The sheets were cold.
Glory sat up, pulling the dark duvet over her bare chest. On the bedside table sat a small glass of water, a fresh bottle of Hope’s rare medication, and a folded piece of paper written in crisp, elegant handwriting.
Glory picked up the note with trembling fingers and unfolded it:
Dr. Harrison confirmed that Hope's morning vitals are stable. I have early meetings in Tokyo and will be gone for three days. My staff will attend to your needs. Remember the contract, Glory. Do not mistake passion for something it isn't.
Glory stared at the cold, clinical words on the page, the sharp sting of rejection cutting through the lingering physical warmth of the night before. She had given him everything, crossed a line she could never uncross—and Alexander had casually reminded her that to him, she was still just an arrangement.
She was physically safe, her sister was alive, but as Glory looked around the vast, empty room, a chilling realization settled deep in her chest: Alexander held all the power, and her heart was already in grave danger.
