MASON POV
Sitting in my office, I can't help but keep replaying the interview with that girl Archer just interviewed.
Despite her glasses and conservative attire, she had these mesmerizing sea-blue eyes and cherry-like lips that are truly unforgettable.
I feel like I've seen her somewhere before, a strong intuition is telling me so.
But my train of thought is suddenly interrupted as my fiancée, Fiona, walks in with her designer clothes and 8-inch high heels. Her vibrant red hair was the most eye-catching presence in the entire office.
“Sorry, boss, I can’t stop her,” the secretary apologizes. Fiona’s vicious smile disappears and she yells at Monica rudely.
“Are you blind, I am Mason’s fiancée not just some random person off the street, so move.” she tries to wedge her way into the office, elbowing Monica in the process so she can escape her nagging.
Her loud entrance has made my brows furrow in distaste. Fiona steps aside from her and strides over to my desk. With a flip of her long stick straight hair over one shoulder and a sweet smile on her thin lips she looks absolutely innocent compared to her rudeness just a minute ago. Her eyes run my appearance up and down like a hungry beast before coming over and leaning on the edge of my desk.
“What happened this time?” I coldly greet Fiona.
"Next Friday my sister's family will hold a birthday party for my little nephew. My sister wanted me to make sure you were going" Twirling a lock of hair arouind her finger, Fiona tilts forward slightly to exaggerate her exposed cleavage and jade necklace resting in the hollow of her neck.
Glancing up I see she must be trying to get my attention with her beauty but it is no working this time.
"Too busy," I say curtly before going back to my reports.
I deny her in two words because we are not close, or we are enemies. 5 years ago, I was invited to the Winchester family but ended up waking up on Fiona’s bed.
But too bad, I have no memory of it.
So the two families agreed to have Fiona and I be in a "committed relationship". At first it actually went well. Fiona was a sweet girl. But since the engagement her personality has done a complete 180. Maybe she is just showing her true colors now. She is rude and entitled and loves spending all my money. She treats my staff terribly. What confuses me the most is that I have never had any s****l urge to her since that night. I don’t even want to get close to her.
I hate breaking promises. If she’s like the girl I interviewed today, I will probably be attracted to her in a second, though that girl’s dressing style is a bit olld fashioned.
My mind wanders because of that girl.
Fiona’s eyes twitched before she put on a mischievous smile.
She leans in close to my ear, breathing hotly, "Mason, do you want to play some thrilling games?"
I have no idea what trick she has up her sleeve, but before I can say anything, she starts undressing.
"There could be someone entering my office at any moment. Are you sure about this?" I warn her.
She places a finger on her lips and makes a "shh" sound.
Then her clothes slide off, dropping to the floor by her feet. She reveals a pair of exaggerated and grotesque-looking artificial breasts, resembling two stiff and repulsive soldiers.
She begins to wiggle her body, and as I watch this repulsive scene, I can't help but furrow my brow.
Just then, I catch a glimpse of a figure outside, moving erratically.
It's her, the girl with glasses who came for the interview.
I see her gaping mouth, seemingly shocked by what's happening in the office.
"Oh Mason, how do you like it?" Fiona moans while caressing herself. "Your fiancée, me, stripping down piece by piece in your office..."
But my gaze skips past her and actually lands on Abigail at the door.
Her reaction is too amusing that I say, "Exciting."
However, as Fiona tosses her stockings at me and turns around to wiggle her butt, Abigail gets scared and runs away.
When Fiona proceeds to climb onto my desk, I completely lose interest.
"Monica, come in ten minutes to clean up my desk and escort Miss Fiona out," I press the intercom button and instruct my secretary.
"You better put your clothes back on before Monica comes in," I say coldly to Fiona and get up to leave.
This drives Fiona completely mad.
"What! Mason! You can't do this to me!"
"I've stripped myself naked! If you were a real man, you wouldn't leave like this..."
I hear her screaming behind me like a shrew and she throws my telephone to the ground.
ABIGAIL POV
I arrive at the new home Giuliana prepared for Mia and me, following the address she gave me.
After opening the door, Mia is the first to run out and jump into my arms. I squat down to embrace her, catching a whiff of the milky scent on her, feeling both content and reassured.
"Congratulations, Mom! You're amazing!" Mia smiles, squinting her eyes. I guess Giuliana must have told her the news of my successful interview.
"Thank you, my sweetheart," I peck her cheeks twice.
"Guess who's back?" Giuliana emerges wearing an apron. "I bet it's the rising star of Los Angeles architecture!"
Giuliana expresses her joy and playfully teases me.
"Come here for a hug, dear!" I call out to her, and she comes forward to take my coat and bag, giving me a big hug in return.
Then the three of us sit by the sofa and start enjoying our dinner.
Mia runs back into the room halfway through her meal.
Giuliana and I stay in the living room.
“Have you thought of how to face your family now that you’re back?” Giulia asks cautiously as she takes the last bite of her Chinese food. She sets the now empty container on the coffee table as she anxiously stares at me and curls her legs up onto the sofa, waiting for my reply.
Looking out the window at the golden sunset I think before turning back to her with a determined look.
“For Mia’s sake I’ll face anything or anyone.” I set my food down and raise a hand in pledge to my words.
But in honesty I really will do anything for my baby girl, I’m no longer the weak and desperate teenager I was 5 years ago.
“Oh, by the way I have some gossip for you. Next Friday the Winchester’s are holding a huge party that all the elite and prominent families of Los Angeles are invited to. It seems like a super big deal.”
Winchester, a name I thought I had been rid of all those years ago.
A shiver runs down my spine before I reply.
“Do you have an invite?” I ask as I stand up from my relaxed position. Giulia startles in surprise, whether from my sudden movement or the question itself, I’m not sure. She is second in line to her family’s company which is the biggest construction industry supplier in the state so I wouldn’t doubt she has one.
“Uh, yeah I do, here.” She jumps up from her seat and walks over to her purse that’s sitting on the kitchen counter. Giulia digs through it before scampering back over to me, handing the envelopeover. Inside is the gilded invitation.
“What are you going to do?” Giulia asks as she shifts in her seat with anticipation.
“I left in a hurry back then; I wasn’t able to get my belongings and the heirlooms I'd inherited from my mother’s will,” I say nonchalantly, when in fact it’s a very big deal. The company my father owns today was originally my mother's Richard Bonks married my mother, Isla Winchester, so he could gain power and use her family influence in the Los Angeles community.
When my mother died, he took over as the CEO but as my mother’s only child I was left 10% stocks in her will, along with a few other family heirlooms. Although 10% isn’t much and it won’t allow me to become the CEO it still gives me enough power to make the company hurt financially. Now that I’m back in Los Angeles there is no way in hell I’ll let Naomi fish lips take over my mother’s company.
“Hey about Mia’s father, are you really going to try and find him? After all these years it will be like finding a needle in a haystack.” Giulia says cautiously knowing she has already brought up the past but might as well continue the path she’s on.
The question makes my heart skip a beat.
“Look, Mia is gorgeous with her dark hair and emerald, green eyes, if she is this pretty surely her father will look similar and hopefully be just as handsome. Also, we know he was someone invited to my 18th birthday back then, which Naomi made sure only the elite of Los Angeles were invited to. I mean, how hard can it be to find a hot rich guy in L.A.?” I glance at Mia on her pile of pillows and I cannot help but feel proud at my strong and beautiful girl.
I stare at the gilded invitation in my hand, the family name "Winchester" elegantly printed in cursive on it. The man with his forest-green eyes flashes through my mind once again.
"Alright, since you've made up your mind, I'll do my best to help you," Giuliana gives me an affirming look.
"Thanks, Giulia. I know you're always the most supportive of me," I respond with a grateful smile.
"Well, Abby—" Giuliana suddenly calls my name in a mysterious tone, mischief twinkling in her eyes.
"Feel like indulging a bit? I think today calls for a celebration," she whispers in my ear.
"What?" I squint, puzzled by her suggestion.
Before I can ask what about Mia if we go out, Giuliana excitedly interrupts, "Well, I'll call your new babysitter to take care of Mia, so you and I can hit the bar and celebrate your new job."
"But... we're going out on a Monday night?" I cautiously inquire.
"Yes! What could possibly go wrong?" Giuliana doesn't give me a chance to refuse.
MASON POV
As I shake off Fiona and leave the office, I finally get a moment to breathe.
That woman would go to great lengths to get my attention, resorting to disgusting tactics. But because of that one-night stand five years ago, I have to pay the price and play the role of her perfect fiancé.
Her awful behavior makes me doubt if she's even the person I had that one-night stand with five years ago.
I choose to head downstairs to the coffee shop and have the barista serve me a pour-over Americano.
Just as I take a sip of coffee and gaze out the window, I see Archer and Derek walking over in my direction.
"Hey, Mason! What brings you here all by yourself?" Archer plops down with his usual flamboyant grin, which is quite characteristic of him.
"You sure know how to find a quiet spot, Mason." Derek glances at me after taking a seat.
Archer chuckles and tells me, "Maybe you should know that your fiancée is causing a scene at the office right now."
"I don't care," I say.
"But she's really annoying, Mason," Archer complains. "What does she want? Can't you just satisfy her?"
I let out a cold laugh and reply, "She can find other men to satisfy her. I'm not interested in her."
Archer laughs again upon hearing my response, and Derek touches his nose, unable to hide the smirk on his face.
"To be honest, Mason, I can't quite figure out your taste. Do you actually like that plain Jane we saw today?" Archer raises an eyebrow at me.
"Who's the plain Jane?" I wonder.
"Forgetting already? Abigail, the old-fashioned girl you insisted on keeping around," Archer pouts.
"She's not a plain Jane," I emphasize, setting down my coffee cup.
Archer seems taken aback by my serious expression, and he closes his mouth.
After a moment of silence, Archer pretends as if nothing happened and smiles at me, saying, "Come on, Mason, don't be so uptight. We should go have some fun!"
"Yeah, maybe we can hit the bar, have some drinks, and forget about your annoying fiancée for a while."
"Let's go!"
