Chapter 8Aaron waited for the call to connect. There was no ignoring the tremble in his hands and he had to clutch the phone to keep it from shaking. It rang once, twice, three times, and by the fourth ring, Aaron knew it was going to go to voicemail. Which was fine, it had been a bad idea. Jeff would never answer and why would Aaron have ever expected him to? It didn’t switch to voicemail, though. It connected. “Make my day and tell me you’re dying on the side of a road somewhere.” Aaron spoke quickly, worried that if he gave Jeff a moment to think, there was a good chance Jeff would disconnect the call and block him. “Don’t hang up.” The other end of the phone was dead silent. “I need to talk to you.
