Chapter seven:the ride home

she paused for a second when he opened the door for her.
it caught her off guard a little.
for some reason, she hadn’t expected that from him.
a man like adrian looked like the type that had people opening doors for him instead.
“thanks,” she said softly before getting in.
the inside of the car smelled faintly like his cologne again. dark and clean and distracting in the worst way possible.
by the time he got into the driver’s seat, sofia was already staring out the window pretending to focus on literally anything else.
the ride stayed quiet at first.
not awkward exactly.
just quiet enough for her thoughts to become a problem.
because now she was alone with him.
really alone.
and somehow that changed everything.
she became too aware of every small thing. the sound of his watch when his hand moved on the steering wheel. the calm look on his face while driving. the way one hand rested casually near the gearshift.
it was ridiculous.
she needed to calm down.
adrian glanced at her briefly before looking back at the road.
“why are you sitting so stiff?”
her heart skipped embarrassingly fast.
“i’m not stiff.”
“you look uncomfortable.”
“i’m okay.”
his eyes moved toward her again for one short second.
“is the cold too much?”
sofia blinked slightly. “what?”
“the temperature,” he replied calmly. “should i reduce it?”
“no,” she answered quickly. “it’s fine.”
short.
too short.
even she noticed it.
silence returned for another moment before he spoke again.
“did i do something wrong?”
that made her look at him immediately.
“no.”
“because you’ve been nervous around me since you walked into the apartment.”
and unfortunately, he sounded completely calm saying it.
which somehow made her even more nervous.
“i’m not nervous.”
one side of his mouth lifted slightly like he didn’t believe her at all.
“right.”
sofia looked away again instantly, cheeks warming slightly while the quiet returned between them.
but this time it felt different.
heavier somehow.
