The days following Amira’s return to Nueva Ecija were filled with a blend of sadness and determination. The remnants of their farm, once a symbol of their hard work and dreams, lay in ruins. The small hut that they had called home was little more than a pile of debris, and the memory of her father's death still weighed heavily on Amira’s heart. Yet, amidst the loss, there was also a quiet resolve to rebuild—not just their home, but their lives.
Each day, Amira woke early to gather her brothers, Andres and Luis, and set to work. They salvaged what little they could from the wreckage, trying to rebuild a semblance of normalcy. The pain from the loss of their father was still raw, but the love and support between the three siblings was a source of strength.
“Ate, anong gagawin natin ngayon?” Luis asked, looking up at her with wide eyes filled with hope.
“Maglilinis tayo ng bakuran at maghahanap tayo ng mga materyales para sa bahay,” Amira replied, doing her best to stay strong for her brothers. "Kailangan natin magsimula muli."
Their stepmother, Teresa, quietly watched from the doorway, her hands folded together. Though she had never been a biological mother to Amira, she had always done her best to care for her. With her husband gone, it was now her responsibility to guide the children through this difficult time.
"Ate, may dumating na tao," Andres called out to her, pointing toward the road.
Amira turned around, startled to see a large vehicle approaching their property. The truck rolled to a stop, and from inside, a man stepped out—tall, with a familiar face. He smiled at Amira.
“Amira! Ipinag-utos mga prinsipe na pumunta ako para maghatid ng mga ito sayo. Nagpadala sila ng tulong para sa inyo ng pamilya mo at sa mga tao dito sa baryo na nasalanta din ng bagyo,” the driver called out, his voice full of warmth.
“Anong tulong?” Amira asked, her curiosity piqued. She had heard from the princes through the occasional letters, but she had not expected any further assistance.
“Mga pagkain, materyales para sa paggawa ng bahay, at may nagpadala pa ng mga trabahador para tulungan kayo sa pagpapagawa ng bagong bahay,” the driver explained. “Binigyan ka nila ng mga kailangan mo para makapagsimula kayong muli. At higit pa, papagawan din nila kayo ng grocery store na itatayo sa dating sakahan ng iyong ama.”
Amira’s eyes widened with disbelief. “Bakit? Hindi naman nila kailangang gawin ‘yun.”
“Nag-aalala sila para sa iyo,” the driver said kindly. “Ang mga prinsipe ay nagsabi na wala kayong dapat ipag-alala. Ang lahat ng ito ay mula sa kanila.”
As the driver began unloading the truck, Amira’s heart swelled with gratitude. It was more than just material support; it was the knowledge that the princes cared for her and her family, even though they were miles apart. She thought back to the moments she had spent with them—how kind, patient, and generous they had been.
“Mga kapatid, tumulong tayo sa kanila,” Amira called to Luis and Andres, urging them to help bring the supplies inside.
With the help of the driver and a few local volunteers who had heard about the assistance, they began unloading the truck. Bags of rice, canned goods, and boxes of vegetables piled up quickly. Then, a larger group arrived—construction workers and engineers who had been sent to help build a new home and grocery store. The princes, not content with just sending food, had also arranged for the construction of a larger, cozy concrete house and a grocery store that would provide the community with fresh produce and essential goods.
Amira's heart swelled with gratitude. She could hardly believe the kindness the princes had shown. She had expected nothing more than the occasional letter or message of sympathy, but this—this was beyond anything she could have hoped for.
“Ate, ang ganda ng bahay at grocery store na gagawin nila!” Luis exclaimed, looking at the construction workers who were already setting up materials to begin work.
“Talaga,” Amira said softly, her eyes shining with gratitude. “Hindi ko alam kung paano ko sila pasasalamatan.”
Teresa came up beside Amira, her eyes filled with tears. "Wala kang dapat ikabahala, Amira. Binibigyan nila tayo ng pagkakataon na magsimula ulit."
Amira nodded, taking a deep breath. She turned to the workers and gave them a respectful nod. “Maraming salamat po sa pagtulong.”
The construction of their new home and grocery store was set into motion immediately. The workers began by laying the foundation, digging into the earth to prepare the ground for the new structures. Over the next several weeks, the house and store began to take shape—concrete walls, a solid roof, and windows that let in the bright, warm light of the sun.
Amira spent most of her days overseeing the construction, making sure that everything was progressing smoothly. Despite the physical exhaustion that came with it, she found a sense of peace in the steady progress. It was a symbol of new beginnings—of hope rising from the ashes of loss.
Late one afternoon, as Amira watched the sun set behind the new house, she found herself thinking of the princes. How had they known exactly what she and her family needed? It felt as though they had been watching over her all along, even from a distance. She couldn’t help but wonder what they must think of her, now that she had returned to her family. Would they expect her to continue the life they had offered her in the palace? Or would she choose to stay with her family, to rebuild her life from the ground up?
The sound of hammering broke her thoughts as she turned back toward the workers. “Ate, halika na. Kailangan natin magtulungan,” Andres called out to her.
She smiled and joined her brothers as they continued to help rebuild their new home and grocery store. Even though the work was tiring and difficult, there was a lightness in the air—a sense of possibility that had been missing when they first arrived.
The house and grocery store would take time to finish, but with the help of the princes, their community, and their unbreakable bond as a family, Amira knew they could overcome anything. Their journey was just beginning, but the foundation of their new life was already in place.
