My smile falters as the door clicks shut behind Eli and I feel something twist in the pit of my stomach—something I can’t explain. Getting up, I stand by the hotel window, my heart heavy with emotion as tears threaten to spill from my eyes, even though I don’t want to cry.
I watch as Eli’s car drives away, a lump forming in my throat for reasons I can’t quite understand, and my hand instinctively drifts to my stomach, desperately trying to steel myself.
