Beryl's POV
But I still underestimated the influence of the twins.
I lay in bed, tossing and turning, unable to sleep. Fate was a fickle thing. My wolf told me the twins were my mates. I hadn't even had a boyfriend, so how could I handle twins? What's more, Lyra would never accept my status. Just thinking about it left me at a loss.
Tomorrow was the school dance. The twins had invited me, and despite my worries, I agreed. I rarely attended these events before. I had endless chores, rushing home after school each day. Lyra wouldn't let me sneak out, always finding excuses for me to redo tasks.
Although I still worked for my keep, my status in the pack had risen because of the twins. People noticed the shift in their attitude toward me. Even the girls who used to bully me came to apologize, wanting to be my friend.
While Lyra was away, they even moved my room from the attic to a spacious corner room on the east side of the house, with a soft, comfortable bed.
Every morning, I felt the warmth of the sun on my face as it streamed through the window, my golden hair cascading down to my waist, shimmering in the light.
"Maid! It seems I've been too lenient with you lately. It's already morning. Why aren't you downstairs making breakfast?" Lyra's heavy footsteps approached as she spoke.
I quietly slipped past the kitchen, avoiding her gaze and hiding in the pantry. I walked past their room. The house had five floors, with Alpha and Lyra occupying the most luxurious one.
Feining breathlessness, I pretended to have rushed down from the attic. "The stairs are so steep, aren't they?"
Startled by my sudden appearance, Lyra looked at me suspiciously. "Don't be ridiculous."
Despite the scolding, I was secretly pleased with my little victory.
I felt more positive about the Greystar Pack.
Perhaps being the twins' mate wasn't a bad thing. My life was actually getting better!
Except for Ashley.
Ashley was crazy about the twins. After failing to teach me a lesson last time, she was furious. Things spiraled out of control when I witnessed her confessing to Lucas at school.
Ashley seductively sidled up to Lucas. "Baby, aren't you excited to see me?"
Lucas remained coldly silent, neither rejecting nor welcoming her advances.
"My figure is much better than Beryl's. You will definitely experience the ultimate climax." She stood up, leaning slightly, her ample bosom heaving beneath her clothes, or lack thereof.
"Your body is indeed great," Lucas said, his gaze unwavering. "But, I'm not interested at all. You and a dead tree hold the same appeal for me. I'm only attracted to one person, and that's Beryl, my mate."
"You'll regret this!" Ashley snorted, rolling her eyes and storming off.
True to her word, Ashley found her opportunity to teach me a lesson before the school dance.
I was incredibly nervous as the dance approached. Not just because I was attending with the twins, but because I hadn't been to one in over a decade. When I arrived at school, I didn't see the twins. I had no idea where they were.
Time flew by, and the bell rang again. I felt like Cinderella forgotten by the prince, stripped of my magic and cornered by Ashley.
"You have to drop out of school!" Ashley shrieked at me, her envious gaze stripping me bare. "Leave Lucas alone, he's mine."
"Lucas doesn't belong to anyone," I retorted, rolling my eyes. "He doesn't have a mate yet. You can go for it."
"Maid, it seems you still haven't learned your lesson." Ashley shoved me. "You'll always be just a slave. I can easily hurt you. Get out of here while I'm still holding back."
"That's right," Tessa, Ashley's best friend, chimed in, mimicking her menacing tone. "Or we'll make you 'look good' at the dance, b***h!"
"Don't you know, the twins' longest relationship never lasted more than two weeks? You're just a pathetic plaything, you haven't even awakened your wolf!"
"Maybe I'll awaken my wolf soon!" I argued.
"Don't be ridiculous." Ashley and Tessa laughed mockingly. "When will you awaken? When you're lying in your coffin?"
Ashley's words stung, hitting a nerve deep inside me. I felt defeated, exhausted. I tried to leave, but Ashley grabbed my wrist. "I didn't say you could leave."
"At the dance, I'll be Lucas' date. I won't let you take him from me."
Unable to break free, I was pushed hard to the ground. Mud stained my dress. For tonight's dance, I had chosen my only pretty dress, a pale blue one. It was the only formal dress I'd ever owned. Now it was ruined. How could I possibly show up at the dance like this?
Tears welled up in my eyes. Biting my lip, I tried to push away the chaotic thoughts. Maybe my wolf was wrong. Maybe I wasn't the twins' mate. Mr. Eleanor once said that the feeling between mates was unmistakable.
Unfortunately, my wolf was always asleep, and I couldn't ask her for more information, leaving me in a constant state of confusion.
Ashley tore a corner of my dress. "Stop it! Stop it!" I cried out in despair. "You can't ruin this dress. It's the only one, the only one I have..."
"What's wrong? Poor Beryl, can't you afford a new dress?" Ashley gloated. "I don't understand how you have the nerve to attend the dance."
"Let's tear it up even more," Tessa said, ripping at the fabric.
They laughed cruelly.
Just then, I heard heavy footsteps. "Were the twins here?"I thought, "I needed to avoid them!"But before I could react, Andrew appeared before me, the air thick with his scent.
Seeing me covered in dirt, Andrew grabbed Ashley in a fury. "What did you do to her?"
"Beryl will be at the dance in the most expensive dress, while you, you're not even qualified to attend." Lucas glared at Ashley, his aura radiating dominance, making her tremble under his pressure.
Third Person POV
Lucas was surprised to see Ashley there. It wasn't difficult for the twins to guess what Beryl had been through.
Just now, they were holding two luxurious gift bags, filled with accessories they had bought for Beryl to match her dress.
Seeing this, Ashley and Tessa quickly fled, unable to withstand the twins' anger.
Lucas and Andrew handed the gift bags to Beryl, her green eyes widening in surprise. The twins immediately moved to soothe her anxiety.
"What's this?"
"What else could it be? It's a gift from me, of course," Andrew said.
They sensed her low spirits, which in turn, upset their wolves.
"My goddess, she must have encountered something unpleasant," Fenris roared in Lucas' mind.
"Don't you care? You're not protecting her enough! She's always getting bullied by those bitches!" Fenris complained.
"Shut up!" Lucas retorted, finding Fenris too noisy.
Beryl looked at Andrew strangely, as if he had grown a second head. "I don't need gifts, it's not my birthday."
"Of course it's not a birthday present."
"These are accessories for the school dance," Lucas said. He caught a whiff of Beryl's scent, sensing her distress. "Haven't we given you enough security?"
Lucas tilted her chin up. Her scent was intoxicating, conjuring images of her bathing. He felt himself stir.
He could hear her heartbeat, her heavy breathing, confirming his suspicions.
The twins were furious, discussing how to deal with Ashley. Fenris roared in their minds, enraged by her disrespect towards Beryl.
"She doesn't deserve to be at the dance," Fenris growled.
"We should kick her out," Andrew agreed.
"That wouldn't be difficult," Lucas mused, "but we need Fenris' help."
Andrew smirked. "Ashley is madly in love with you, brother. So you're the one who brought this disaster upon Beryl."
"It's precisely because I understand Ashley's nature that we need a more comprehensive plan. We can't let Beryl get dragged into this."
The twins exchanged glances, finding the answer in each other's eyes.
Beryl clutched her torn dress, her voice filled with despair. "I'm sorry, but I can't go to the dance with you tonight."
"Absolutely not!" Andrew exclaimed, pulling her into a hug, as if afraid she might disappear. "You have to go with us!"
The ripped fabric revealed her fair skin, making her scent even more alluring. Andrew leaned in close, nuzzling her ear, testing her patience.
"But my dress is ruined," Beryl said, her voice trembling, her eyes shimmering with tears. She reminded the twins of a startled fawn in the forest.
Her scent grew sweeter.
Lucas chuckled. "My dear girl, don't you worry. We've not only bought you accessories, but also a beautiful new dress. I'll have Beta take you to change. You'll be the most beautiful girl at the dance tonight." He kissed her tentatively, his lips lingering on hers.
Beryl was then led to the changing room, but the twins didn't follow. They had more important matters to attend to, punishing Ashley for bullying Beryl.
Transforming into their wolves, they snapped bones in seconds. Their fur gleamed under the moonlight as they raced across the vast pack territory. Their thick coats were a deep, shadowed grey, their golden eyes burning with a dangerous light that seemed to pierce through everything.
They found Ashley quickly.
Their wolves threatened and chased Ashley, who had also shifted, forcing her to flee.
The entire process was simple yet effective.
Ashley was gone, driven away with bite wounds from the twins' wolves. The wounds were deep and would take a long time to heal. At least for now, Ashley wouldn't be causing any more trouble.
