The Good, The Bad and The Ugly
Conner looked left and right before he walked up towards their room. Gemma and Max. He didn’t deserve her! Max was an animal. A dirty wolf. He wasn’t Fae or even an elf like Conner was.
When Goine had first approached him years ago, to help obtain Gemma; Conner had agreed. He hated humans and to an extent, the Fae. When his Elfin father slept with his mother and he had been born; he had discovered that his elfin father had a little Fae in him...because he was also Goine’s father. Goine had relished telling his half sibling of their connection and had used that hate to recruit him into their folds. But Conner wasn’t stupid. He knew Goine didn’t truly consider him his brother; he only used him because he knew Conner had the demon element in him that allowed him to have certain powers that Goine could never have.
Conner approached the bedroom, trying to keep his thoughts and his heart clean otherwise he knew he would be discovered. As he knocked on the door, his mind already made up with an excuse of why he was there, Conner waited patiently for an answer. When he heard no sound, he slowly opened the bedroom door. As he tried to walk into the room, he was immediately knocked back a couple of spaces as the invincible protective charm denied him entry.
“s**t” Conner whispered
Conner turned around and walked towards the staircase, wondering where Gemma was. Even though he hadn’t admitted it to Goine or Chris; Conner truly had fallen for Gemma. At the beginning, he hated her. Hate all she stood for. Hated who she was and had wanted to hurt her, kill her even. Then, over the two years that they were together, he had slowly started to see HER. Who she really was. Even while others frowned down on him, she never thought of him as less. When she hadn’t wanted to have s*x, he had laughed inside at her rediculus notion that s*x meant something. As he played the waiting game, he discovered how good she truly was and how innocent her heart was too. He started to notice then how her face would light up when he was considerate, or how she leaned in for a hug...just because. Even when Conner did something that Gemma couldn’t explain, she still stood strong by him. Before he knew it, he looked forward to seeing her and when they started to become sexually active; he slowly started to care about her. When he proposed, he didn’t do it because he had to. Yes it was part of the plan and Goine tried to push him to do it earlier, but on the day Conner proposed, he knew it was because he had admitted a truth to himself that day. That he loved Gemma and wanted to make her his. He would have helped drain her essence, given it to Goine and would have whisked Gemma away to the underworld, where demons lived. He would have taken her away from all the prophecy surrounding her and would have made many a spawn with her.
“Oh, sorry, were you looking for me?” Gemma said
Conner turned around, surprised to see Gemma now standing at the door and in the very room that she hadn’t been in before. He almost let himself ask her where she had been and how she had gotten into the room when before, she hadn’t been there; when he remembered his place
“My lady” Conner said, bowing to her “I have fish finger sandwiches for you along with some Irn Bru if you would like to come down?”
“Oh!” Gemma exclaimed in happiness “Yes please”
“We will be down shortly” Max said in a sombre voice
When Max closed the door, Connor turned around and walked back down the stairs, his steps measured as he walked beside the table and saw Pontus walking in, his left arm in the air beside him as freshly laundered and folded pile of clothes floated in the air under his fingers. Seeing him, Pontus stopped for a moment in surprise
“I thought you would be in the kitchen making arrangements for lunch” Pontus enquired
“It’s been done. Sandwiches and drinks have arrived” Conner said “Pontus, would you mind if I leave for a moment. I have a few errands for the kitchen to run”
“No not at all. I will let the Astrid and Max know-” Pontus started to speak
“I have spoken to them already” Conner said in a rush “They have said they will be down shortly”
Nodding, Pontus continued walking into the dorm as he placed the clothes into a silver tray. As he started to sort them into the right clothing piles, Conner walked out of the dorm and into the corridor. He saw many students and teachers as they moved around the academy, laughing and joking with each other as they ignored Conner who was only too happy to be invincible at this time. He kept his breathing low even as he felt his heartbeat pick up in anger. As he finally found the empty cupboard away from the main corridor, he took out a blue ball; threw it into the air and stepped into the open portal that transferred him back to his chosen place
“My boy! What are you doing here? I haven’t seen you in so long”
Conner looked up into the eyes of his mother, her long black hair tied as a knot on top of her head. Her black dress dragged behind her as she walked towards him with a smile.
“I hate him!” Conner shouted in anger before letting out a bellowing cry, fire lighting up around him as he screamed out again
“Come” His mother said gently “Let me help you”
“Every time...every f*****g time! He always interferes” Conner said angrily
“He is her mate. It’s to be expected that he is cautious who is around her” His mother explained
“But-” Conner started
“Come” His mother urged
Taking his arm, she guided him to the kitchen table as he realised that in his anger, he had gone where he could seek comfort and speak what was in his heart. He went back to his mother. While his mother, Julianna, wasn’t a good demon, she wasn’t a bad one either. She often walked between the two lines and based her outcome on the choices she had and what the outcome would be if she acted in certain ways As Conner sat at the table, his mother put down a cup of hot drink in front of him as she walked to sit beside him on the chair
“I am not good, nor bad. That part of me, you have also. While I have never understood the need to fit in, I understand that you wish for siblings has lead you to be with Goine” Julianna said quietly “But that does not mean that you have to follow through on what goes against your heart”
“We are demons. We don’t have hearts” Conner spat out in anger
“If we didn’t have them, then you’re wouldn’t beat for Gemma” Julianna said softly
Conner picked up and threw his cup against the stone wall behind him in anger as he took in what his mother said
“Then cut it out of me!” Conner shouted
“If it were only that simple” Julianna said sadly
Conner laughed with a sad and loud voice as he wondered if his heart was on his sleeve for others to see. Could Goine already know? Conner put his hand to his forehead as he changed back to his demon self, his skin changing , his ears becoming pointy. When Goine had told his that he had planned to have s*x with Gemma when he found her, Conner had been disgusted. He was essentially her uncle and Goine had thought about doing this when Gemma had been a child. There had been many deplorable things that Conner had done in the past; many people and morals that he had betrayed but he had never stopped so low as to do what Goine had wanted to.
“The others can’t see it” Julianna said
Conner looked at his mother in surprise “What?”
“Your heart’s desire. It is not visible to anyone. I see it because I am your mother and I have a small percentage of the gift of sight; but the others…..when they are full of greed and sickness, then anything good and pure is often blinded to them” Julianna explained
“If I can get the essence out of her” Conner said, looking at his mother “It would change everything”
“Not enough. Had it been you who had been her first, then you would have had a better chance. Now, she has mate with her two beings. There is little to no hope” Julianna said, shaking her head
“If I could just-” Conner started
“If you persist down that road, you could forfeit your life” Julianna cut in, standing up
Conner hissed in a surprised breath as he shook his head, walking slowly to his mother. His fingers tapping on the table in agitation
“And you still see this?” Conner asked quietly
“I do. Help Goine if you want, but you pursuing Gemma…..ends in your demise and I don’t want to see my son lost to me” Julianna said, cupping Conner’s face lovingly
Pushing his mothers hands away, Conner stomped out of the room as Julianna fell to her knees onto the stone floor and covered her face with her hands, weeping at the thought of her son lost to her

“I will have the truth!” Goine shouted louder
Goine used both arms as he swiped at all the decorations and paper on the table, sweeping them off the table and onto the floor; breaking some of the items. As the sound of crashing items rang loudly in the room, Goine’s eyes bulged as his breathing sounded harsh and loud in the room. Chris calmly looked at Goine, his left eyebrow lifting in enquiry
“Are you done having a tantrum?” Chris asked
“This wouldn’t have even happened if I hadn’t started all of this” Goine said, holding his hand out to his sides in a flourish “I am the one that has given you the reason to do what you did and you think to withhold information from me. I always knew of Carrie but who else is there?”
“You don’t need to know right now. All you need to know is that we have many insiders who have been help-” Chris cut off and ducked his head as Goine threw a fireball at his head
“Who….is...it?” Goine asked through clenched teeth
“If you persist in acting foolish, there is little chance of me telling you anything” Chris said with a calm voice
Goine looked at Chris before stretching and twisting his neck, letting the tension out as his muscles relaxed. When he opened his eyes again, the rage was gone and a smirk lifted the right side of his lips
“Keep your secrets” Goine said in a soft deadly voice “ but just remember who Julianna will only speak to about her visions”
Chris’s smile fell off his face as he listened to the veiled threat from Goine. Understanding his position, Chris walked around the mess on the floor and sat down behind the table, trying to act calm.
“The only reason I don’t wish to tell you who it is; is because of Conner” Chris said quietly
“What has he got to do with this?” Goine asked with a frown
“He still carries a torch for Gemma” Chris explained
“Bahhhahaaa” Goine laughed, throwing his head back “Preposterous! This is another one of your lies so as not to tell me what I want to know”
“If it was lies, then why haven’t we performed the Anum-ai spell in months?” Chris asked “You know as I do, that this spell helps whoever is entering their dorm; to keep a peaceful heart towards her and her mate. We had to perform that spell at least once on a weekly basis then eventually twice every month because he still had anger and hatred in his heart. It has been over a year since we have had to do it”
“Because he has gotten so good at hiding his hate” Goine said
Now it was Chris who laughed, copying Goine by throwing his head back. Standing back up, Chris walked over to Goine
“Now who is hiding?” Chris said softly “You’re halfling brother has changed sides. He may still hate the others, but he wants Gemma for himself….as he has ALWAYS wanted her”
Goine looked at Chris’s face before turning around and stalking away, his hand opening up a blue portal ball, sucking him to where he want’s to go, leaving a smirking Chris behind.

“You are being ridiculous” Gemma said in frustration
“Malakaie agree’s with me” Max said as he turned to look at Gemma who was sitting on their bed
“Then you’re both wrong” Gemma said “You know that no-one can enter here with bad intentions. Besides, he’s Pontus’s cousin”
“That’s besides the point, I’m telling you Gem’s, he was acting too suspicious. And the vibe I got wasn’t good” MAx explained as he sat down beside her.
Taking her hand in his, he turned it over and placed a kissed on her wrist where her pulse beat. Looking into her eyes, he sighed
“I would never put you in danger just like I wouldn’t ever take those that you loved, cared for or trusted; away from you. But please listen to me when I say Pontus’s cousin Jorr is not to be trusted. He is not right” Max huffed out.
“Your basing it on the fact that you saw his face change for a second when he turned around to walk away; Which could have been a trick of the light or a facial glitch of him thinking about something else” Gemma sighed
“I’m basing it on the fact that he tried to enter our room and the spell that Malakaie and Nait placed on this room didn’t just bar him...it pushed him away” Max explained
“It did? Wait...what spell?” Gemma asked, sitting up properly
“Malakaie explained that he felt the traitors were too close. That is why he is no longer too comfortable with Maddie, Ben or Cindy being near you-”
“Which I already explained was silly” Gemma said, rolling her eyes
“Maybe” Max hummed “But the point is; he and Nait placed an extra strong enchantment spell. It means that if the room feels like it can’t trust the person entering the room, it will bar or repel them away. Besides the point that he had no right to open the door”
“Oh Max don’t! Don’t be so up-” Gemma started
“This has nothing to do with being stuck up Gemma! For f***s sake! Stop taking your safety so lightly!” Max shouted as he stood up
Running his hands through his hair, he looked back at Gemma who stared at him wide-eyed, her throat swallowing as if she was trying not to cry. Sighing, MAx sat back down beside her and took her hand again
“I can’t be careful enough. I may act and sound mad but it’s because I’m mad about your safety” Max sighed
“I know” Gemma whispered
“Then please let me protect you” Max whispered back “Let me take care of you. I know you can take care of yourself; but I need to also be able to do that”
Gemma nodded her head, the mood in the room now quiet and somber. Max kissed her gently on the lips before standing up and pulling her with him.
“Where are we going?” Gemma asked
“Come on” Max sighed “Let’s go prove that I’m just a crazy mate who is too suspicious for him own good”
“How?” Gemma asked as Max pulled her behind him and out of the room
They both walked down the stairs and past the living room. Seeing the fire alight, Gemma smiled as she and Max shared thoughts of snuggling in front of it while watching some tv before needing to study. When they walked into the dining area and saw the food on the table, Gemma sat down while Max made up plates and Gemma poured the drinks. Gemma laughed when she saw the fish finger sandwiches and happily grabbed some and put them on her plate; ignore the five other dishes there. Max grinned as he filled up his plate, his hand brushing against her thighs as he sat down. When Gemma hummed in pleasure, Max’s c**k hardened as he thought about taking her back upstairs and having his way with her. When Gemma stopped eating her sandwich and looked at him, his body tightened with worry
“What?” Max asked
“When did you tell Pontus that I sometimes enjoyed craft cheese with fish fingers?” Gemma asked, puzzled
“I didn’t” Max growled out
“B..But...then maybe Mammi did?” Gemma whispered
“Gem’z, you’re scaring me. What is it?” Max asked, his food forgotten
“Now and then, I like cheese in the fish finger sandwiches. Not always, so I don’t tell people to make it like that. Since we been here, this is the first time Pontus has had cheese in the sandwiches” Gemma whispered as she looked towards the door
Max got up and had Gemma stand up behind him, mind-linking Cindy to come quickly. As Cindy replied, they heard Pontus walk towards the dining area. Feeling the need to protect them yet sensing Pontus wasn’t a threat, Max only lengthened his nails and kept them to his side.
“Can I get you something else?” Pontus asked, his eyes widening when he saw Gemma’s uneaten food “Were the sandwiches wrong my queen?”
“Pontus” Max said “Why did you change the way the fish sandwiches are usually made?
“I’m sorry, I don’t follow. There is something wrong with the sandwiches?” Pontus asked with a frown
“Yes” Gemma said, clearing her throat “Not all of them, but some have cheese in them...I was just wondering why?"
“I am terribly sorry my Queen” Pontus said with a worried face before bowing. “Jorr placed the order for lunch today. He helped organise it. I advised him of the soup and pie earlier in the morning but when I asked him before he left, he said lunch had been delivered. I didn’t think to check it as he has always done it correctly in the past"
“Jorr” Max said in anger
“He went to the kitchen. I can call-” Pontus explained
“No, that’s not necessary” Max said with a tight smile “I’m sure it was just an honest mistake”
"If you’re sure” Pontus asked worriedly “It’s no trouble-”
“No, really” Gemma said “It’s fine. I was just surprised is all”
Pontus nodded before picking up another tray and walking out of the room. Max turned around and looked at a white faced Gemma who looked as if she was going to faint any moment
“Gemstone?” Max asked as he cradled her face in his hands
“Not everyone knows I like the cheese” Gemma whispered “i only started liking it a few weeks before you came back home. I had it accidentally-”
“How?” Max cut in
“When C...Conner made it for me the first time...he put on cheese. I enjoyed it but felt it was too heavy so couldn’t eat the others” Gemma explained
When Max’s face started to tense up, his eyes blackening with anger and jealousy; Gemma rushed on to explain the rest
“After that, a week before you came back; I had it once in front of everyone when I was at your house. When the staff had made my plate, I told one of the helpers to add a small bit of slice to every third sandwich so it wouldn’t get too heavy. Everyone saw me eat it and I explained how I discovered it” Gemma rushed on
“f*****g Conner” Max gripped
“But why would any of them tell Jorr to do that?” Gemma asked
“Something’s not right. f**k Gem’s!” Max huffed out
“I...I Know.” Gemma whispered worriedly
“Now do you believe me?” Max asked “Something is not right here...and with Jorr….come on” Max said
Pulling Gemma’s hand, he walked out of the dining room, walking towards the door. Hearing Cindy say that she was just by their dorm; Max walked faster
“Where are we going?” Gemma asked
“To the kitchen...to speak to Jorr. It’s time we found some answers” Max said, his mind whirling at the possibility of a traitor closer than he would have liked.
