Chapter4

The morning after the kiss felt like a dream Elara couldn’t quite wake from. She stood at the bathroom sink, gripping the cool porcelain, staring at her reflection. Her lips still tingled. Her cheeks were flushed. Her heart had barely calmed down since last night. She could still feel Ronan’s touch—his hands, his mouth, the way his gaze had softened after their kiss like he’d seen a piece of her no one else ever had. But it wasn’t just about passion. It was something deeper. Raw. Ancient. Their bond had shifted. Strengthened. She was no longer just Elara—the girl who worked at the diner, the girl who never quite fit in. She was becoming something more. And it terrified her. “Elara!” June called from the kitchen. “Are you coming down?” Elara wiped her hands and forced a steady voice. “Yeah, I’ll be right there!” She dressed quickly and made her way downstairs. June was hunched over her laptop, a half-eaten muffin on a plate beside her. “You look like you didn’t sleep,” June said, eyeing her over her glasses. “I didn’t,” Elara muttered. June shut the laptop. “Want to talk about it?” Elara hesitated. “If I told you something crazy… would you believe me?” June blinked. “Try me.” Elara took a deep breath. “What if I said I wasn’t entirely human?” June snorted. “Well, that would explain your weird obsession with raw steak.” Elara gave her a look. “I’m serious.” June’s smile faded. “Okay. Go on.” “I think I’m… part werewolf. My mom—she kept it from me. But I’ve met someone. He’s a shifter too. He’s helping me understand it all.” June stared at her for a long moment. Then she leaned back slowly in her chair. “You’re serious.” “I’m not crazy,” Elara whispered. “I swear.” June blew out a breath. “Okay. I don’t know if I believe it. But I do believe you believe it. And I trust you.” Relief flooded Elara’s chest. “Thank you.” “But if this guy hurts you, I’ll tase him.” Elara smiled. “Fair.” ⸻ Later that day, Elara met Ronan by the lake, the place where they first spoke. The autumn wind skimmed the water’s surface, and golden leaves danced across the rippling shore. Ronan was already there, seated on a mossy log, his eyes closed as if listening to the whispers of the trees. When she approached, he opened his eyes and smiled. “I can hear your footsteps now,” he said. “You’re becoming easier to track.” “Should I be worried?” she asked, sitting beside him. “Only if I were hunting you.” “You kind of were. Weren’t you?” He didn’t answer right away. “I felt your presence before I saw you. Like a scent on the wind. My wolf stirred the second you came to town.” Elara looked down at her hands. “I still don’t understand why me.” “Because you’re my mate.” Her breath caught. “I thought that was just… a legend.” “It’s real. Rare, but real. We don’t choose our mates. The bond does.” Elara glanced at him. “What if I didn’t feel it too?” “I would’ve walked away,” he said softly. “But it would’ve torn me apart.” Elara’s throat tightened. “I do feel it. I didn’t want to. I tried not to. But when I’m near you, it’s like I’m not just me anymore.” Ronan nodded. “That’s the bond. It connects our instincts, our souls. You’ll feel my emotions. My pain. My joy.” “And you feel mine?” “All the time.” She looked out at the water. “It’s a lot.” “It is.” “But it doesn’t feel wrong.” Ronan’s fingers brushed hers. “That’s because it’s not.” They sat in silence, their hands eventually intertwining. Elara felt calm settle over her, like a lullaby only her body could hear. “I had dreams last night,” she said. “I was running through the forest—fast, free. I think I was a wolf.” “That’s your spirit waking up.” “And I wasn’t alone.” He looked at her. “You were there,” she whispered. Ronan’s jaw tensed. “That’s not surprising. The bond connects us even in dreams. Especially when it’s new.” Elara leaned against his shoulder. “What happens now?” “In four nights, under the full moon, you’ll shift. It will be painful, Elara. But beautiful too. And afterward… you’ll never see the world the same way.” “Will I still be able to live here? In this town? With June?” “Yes. But you’ll have another life too—one in the woods, with the pack.” “Will they accept me?” Ronan hesitated. “They’ll follow me. And I accept you. That’s what matters.” Elara raised an eyebrow. “Bit controlling, aren’t you?” He chuckled. “I’m the alpha. It comes with the territory.” The words hung between them. Elara realized it was the first time he’d said it out loud. “You’re the pack’s leader.” “Yes.” “And what does that make me?” Ronan’s eyes glowed faintly. “If you choose it… you’d be Luna. My equal. The heart of the pack.” Elara felt her pulse spike. She hadn’t asked for any of this. And yet… it didn’t feel like a burden. It felt like destiny. ⸻ As twilight fell, Ronan walked her back to the edge of town. The world glowed amber and gold, and the stars began to prick the sky like sparks. At the tree line, they stopped. “You don’t have to be alone tonight,” he said. “If you need me—just whisper my name. I’ll hear it.” “That bond thing again?” He nodded. Elara stepped forward, close enough to feel the heat of his body. “Ronan…” “Yes?” She brushed a kiss to his jaw. “Thank you. For not walking away when I was just some scared human girl.” His hands cradled her face, thumbs brushing her cheeks. “You were never just anything.” They kissed again, slower this time. More tender. It wasn’t about urgency—it was about knowing. And with every second, Elara felt her walls slipping away. When they parted, she whispered, “Good night, Alpha.” Ronan grinned. “Good night, Luna.” She walked away before her knees gave out completely. ⸻ Back in her room, Elara stared out the window, the moon rising slowly in the sky. Her fingers rested on her chest, right over her heart. She could feel it beating—but it wasn’t alone anymore. Somewhere out there, in the dark woods, another heart beat in rhythm with hers. And in four days, everything would change. She wasn’t ready. But with Ronan by her side… maybe she didn’t need to be.
