Chapter 12: A Chilling Realization

1010 Words

Steve turned to Lucy and Adam with a satisfied grin. “Off you go, then. Show us what you’ve got!” As Adam and Lucy headed back to the rink, chatting easily, Elena’s chest tightened. She tried to ignore the pang of jealousy that flared as she watched Lucy laugh at something Adam said. He was being polite, she told herself. That’s all. But it didn’t matter. The sight of them together—so at ease, so natural—ignited a burning ache she couldn’t suppress. Her gaze followed them as they stepped onto the ice, Lucy slipping her hand into Adam’s for balance. She couldn’t hear what they were saying, but the way they leaned toward each other, laughing and skating in sync, made her stomach twist. “You okay?” Steve asked, dropping into the seat beside her. Elena forced a smile. “Fine. Just tired.”
