The heavy oak doors of the master study slammed shut with a concussive boom that rattled the leaded glass windows overlooking the churning sea.
Inside the dimly lit room, the air was thick with the scent of old paper, leather, and gunpowder. Dante stood by the floor-to-ceiling mahogany bookshelves, his broad shoulders tense beneath his shirt, staring down at a tactical map spread across the heavy desk. Small metal markers dotted the city layout, rival territories, safe houses, and the perimeter of the Vane estate.
The warning he had delivered at dinner wasn't just a threat; it was an active countdown.
A sharp knock echoed at the study door, and before Dante could even grant permission, the heavy wood pushed open. Viktor, his second-in-command and the deadliest shadow in the syndicate, stepped inside, his face grave.
"Boss," Viktor said, keeping his voice low and clipped. "We intercepted a coded transmission from the Rossi loyalists. They’ve mobilized a strike team. They aren't waiting for an opening in the city; they’re planning a direct breach on the estate tonight."
Dante didn't flinch. His jaw tightened, a muscle ticking violently in his cheek. The amber flecks in his eyes seemed to expand, glowing with a feral, unnatural intensity in the dim light of the desk lamp.
"How many?" Dante asked, his voice chillingly calm.
"A dozen elite enforcers," Viktor replied, stepping closer. "Armed with heavy ordnance and thermal breaching gear. They think the storm cover and the sea cliffs will give them a blind spot in our perimeter."
"They're fools," Dante snarled softly, turning away from the desk. "Double the guard rotation at the lower sea gates. Move the sniper units to the western ridge. And Viktor?"
"Boss?"
"Leave the front courtyard open. Let them think they found a weak point. I want every single one of them inside the gate before we close the trap."
Viktor gave a sharp nod of acknowledgment and slipped out of the study as silently as he had entered.
Dante exhaled slowly, running a large hand over his face. His mind wasn't on the tactical advantage or the incoming bloodbath; it was locked on the woman currently upstairs in his bed. Elena was stubborn, proud, and furious. The moment the shooting started, she wouldn't cower under the covers like a traditional mafia trophy wife, she would try to find a weapon, or worse, use the chaos to run.
He strode toward the door, his long legs eating up the distance, determined to lock her in the panic room before the first shot was fired.
Upstairs, Elena was pacing the length of the master suite like a caged tigress.
The silk hem of her black velvet gown swished against the Persian rug as she retraced her steps for the tenth time. Her mind raced with a dozen different scenarios. Dante’s warning hadn't been a bluff; she knew her father’s inner circle. If they had put a bounty on her head, they wouldn't hesitate to tear this entire fortress down to the foundations just to wipe out the bloodline alliance.
She couldn't just sit here and wait to be rescued or slaughtered.
If they breach this place, I’m a sitting duck, she thought, her teeth sinking into her lower lip as her eyes scanned the sprawling bedroom for any possible weapon.
She remembered seeing a heavy iron poker by the grand fireplace in the adjoining study, and perhaps a heavy duty communications panel near the desk. Moving decisively, she pushed open the heavy double doors leading into Dante's private study, stepping into the dark, shadowed room.
The moonlight cut through the rain, streaked windows, casting long, sharp beams across the floor. Elena hurried toward the desk, her eyes scanning the shadows.
Suddenly, a massive shadow detached itself from the darkness beside the doorway.
Before she could scream, a heavy arm wrapped around her waist, lifting her feet off the floor, while a large, gloved hand clamped firmly over her mouth, muffling any sound. The sheer, effortless strength behind the hold was unmistakable, it was Dante.
"What in God's name do you think you're doing, you reckless little fool?" Dante's deep, furious growl vibrated right against her ear, hot and ragged.
Elena thrashed wildly in his grip, her elbows driving backward, trying to strike his ribs, but hitting his chest felt like slamming against solid steel. She clawed at the hand covering her mouth until Dante finally pulled her backward against his solid frame, anchoring her completely.
"I am not hiding in a bedroom while people try to kill me," she muffled furiously against his leather clad palm.
Dante slowly lowered her feet to the floor, but he didn't release his grip. He spun her around so she was pressed flush against the edge of the mahogany desk, his large body caging her in completely. In the pale moonlight, his face was a mask of cold, lethal fury, his amber eyes burning down at her with a terrifying intensity.
"Listen to me very carefully," Dante snarled, his voice dropping to a harsh, dangerous whisper. "An elite hit squad is currently moving up the cliffside to breach this estate. They are coming for you. This isn't a game of rebellion, Elena. This is a war, and the moment you step out of line, you get yourself killed."
Elena froze, the anger momentarily stuttering under the sheer weight of his words. Her breath hitched in her throat. "An elite squad... they're already here?"
"They will be within the hour," Dante said, his gaze locked onto hers, searching every micro expression on her face. Instead of stepping back, he reached up, his large hand cupping the back of her neck, his thumb brushing against her sensitive skin. The contrast between the deadly violence of his words and the possessive, searing heat of his touch was dizzying. "And you were wandering around looking for a weapon like a suicidal idiot."
"I am not a coward," Elena shot back, her voice shaking slightly with a mix of adrenaline and sudden, overwhelming proximity. Her hands came up, resting flat against his chest, feeling the violent, rapid rhythm of his heartbeat beneath his shirt. "I refuse to be a passive victim in your war."
"You aren't a victim," Dante murmured, his voice softening into something dark, heavy, and intoxicatingly possessive as his gaze dropped to her lips. "You're my queen. But if you want to survive by my side, you have to trust that the monster protecting you is worse than the monsters hunting you."
The air in the study grew dangerously thin. The distant, muffled crack of a silenced gunshot echoed faintly from the lower perimeter walls, cutting through the sound of the raging storm outside.
The attack had begun.
Elena’s eyes widened, her breath catching as the reality of the violence crashed over them. Yet, neither of them moved. Dante’s hand tightened on the back of her neck, pulling her an inch closer until the space between their lips vanished.
The first kiss wasn't gentle; it was a collision of desperate fury, raw survival, and a volatile, magnetic hunger that had been building since the moment they met at the altar. Dante captured her mouth with a fierce, possessive desperation, his lips crushing against hers as if he wanted to consume her whole and lock her safely inside his own soul.
Elena gasped, a startled sound that was swallowed by his mouth. Her hands curled into the fabric of his shirt, pulling him closer as an electric jolt fueled by the ancient, glowing blood-binding mark on her wrist, shot straight up her arm and exploded through her veins. It was terrifying, intoxicating, and completely consuming.
When Dante finally pulled back just a fraction of an inch, his chest heaving, his amber eyes blazed with an unholy, feral fire that promised absolute ruin and absolute devotion.
"Stay in this room," Dante whispered against her swollen lips, his thumb tracing her cheekbone one last time before he stepped back into the shadows of the doorway. "When I get back, we're going to finish this conversation."
Before she could draw another breath, Dante vanished into the dark hallway, leaving Elena alone in the quiet study as the sounds of war echoed up from the courtyard below.
