Chapter 2: The Threshold

851 Words
The drive from the cathedral to the Vane compound felt less like a journey and more like a descent into an alternate realm. Inside the bulletproof interior of the black SUV, the air conditioning hummed quietly, but the atmosphere was thick with an oppressive, suffocating tension. Elena sat as far against the opposite door as the plush leather seat allowed. Her white lace wedding gown took up half the bench, a stark, mocking symbol of purity in a car that smelled of leather, rain, and Dante’s expensive, cedarwood cologne. Dante didn’t look at her. He sat with one long leg crossed over the other, staring out the tinted window at the slick, neon-lit streets of the city. Yet, despite his physical distance, Elena could feel him, every breath he took seemed to alter the pressure in the cabin. The strange, low vibration she had felt in the cathedral still thrummed faintly beneath her skin, anchoring her to him whether she liked it or not. "You’re staring," Dante said suddenly, his deep voice slicing through the silence without him even turning his head. "I’m looking for an exit," Elena shot back instantly, her voice crisp and unyielding. At that, Dante turned his head. Those unnatural amber eyes caught the dim streetlights flashing outside, glowing like molten gold in the dark. A slow, predatory smile touched the corners of his mouth. "There are no exits in my world, moya zvezda," he murmured, leaning forward into the shadows between them. The sheer gravity of his presence made her pulse spike. "Only deeper rooms. And sooner or later, you’ll walk into them willingly." "Never," she whispered, though the word lacked its usual bite as his gaze locked onto hers. The car slowed, turning through a set of wrought iron gates that loomed like jagged teeth against the stormy sky. They were entering the Vane estate, a sprawling, gothic fortress nestled on the jagged cliffs overlooking the black, churning ocean. High stone walls, armed guards, and security systems older and darker than modern tech kept the rest of the world at bay. This was his kingdom. And she had just been locked inside the keep. The SUV glided to a halt beneath a grand stone portico. Before the driver could even cut the engine, Dante’s door clicked open. He stepped out into the rain, instantly circling the vehicle to pull Elena’s door open before a guard could reach it. He didn't offer a hand. Instead, as Elena tried to slide out on her own, his large, gloved hands gripped her waist. With effortless, terrifying strength, the subtle, supernatural edge of his bloodline flexing beneath his clothes, he hoisted her completely out of the car, setting her feet squarely on the wet cobblestones. Elena gasped, her hands instinctively flying to his chest to push him away. The heavy wool of his suit felt like a wall of iron. "Don't touch me without permission," she hissed, looking up into his shadowed face as the rain began to soak through her hair and lace gown. Dante didn't step back. Instead, he leaned down, his face inches from hers, his breath hot against her damp cheek. "You belong to me, body and blood," he growled softly, the words vibrating against her lips. "You don't get to dictate when I touch what is mine." Before she could reply, he swept one arm beneath her knees and scooped her up into his arms, ignoring her sharp gasp of protest. He carried her up the massive stone steps, past a pair of armed sentinels who kept their eyes fixed straight ahead, and straight through the towering oak double doors of the manor. The heavy doors slammed shut behind them, sealing out the storm and locking her fate into place. The foyer was breathtakingly dark and opulent vaulted ceilings, black marble floors, and massive crystal chandeliers casting long, eerie shadows over centuries-old oil paintings of cold-eyed men who looked remarkably like Dante. "Put me down," Elena demanded, beating her fists lightly against his broad shoulder, though she knew it was like hitting a monolith. "We are going to our rooms," Dante said smoothly, carrying her up a grand sweeping staircase as if she weighed nothing at all. "And then, little ghost, we are going to talk about the rules of your new life." He kicked open a set of heavy mahogany doors at the end of the long hallway, revealing a sprawling master suite draped in velvet, obsidian, and silver. A massive mahogany bed dominated the center of the room, flanked by floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the raging sea. Dante carried her straight to the center of the room and set her down on her feet, but he didn't let go of her waist. His amber eyes blazed down at her, dark with a hunger that made her stomach flip with a dangerous, unwanted thrill. "Welcome to your cage," Dante whispered, his thumb trailing slowly up her bare arm, right over the hidden, glowing mark of their blood-binding. "Let's see how long you try to rattle the bars."
