Cassiopeia arrived at the Imperial Crown Hotel at exactly 6:58PM.
She did not rush.
She did not hesitate.
In her past life, she had walked into places like this feeling small.
Not tonight.
The lobby was quiet, elegant, powerful. Crystal lights shimmered above polished marble floors. Soft music floated through the air.
A hostess approached her.
"Miss Lawrence?"
Cassiopeia paused for half a second.
"Yes."
"This way, please."
So he had planned everything.
Interesting.
She followed the hostess into a private dining hall.
The doors opened slowly.
And there he was.
Ivan Volkov.
Seated calmly at the head of the table, dressed in a perfectly tailored black suit. His presence filled the room without effort.
For a moment, Cassiopeia forgot how to breathe.
She knew that face.
Not from this lifetime.
But from flashes.
From blurred memories of hospital corridors.
From distant board meetings.
From a pair of cold grey eyes watching her when she thought no one was looking.
So it was him.
The man behind the curtain.
The hostess left, closing the doors softly behind her.
Silence settled between them.
Ivan stood.
Every movement was controlled. Measured.
"Miss Lawrence."
His voice was the same one from the phone. Deep. Steady. Dangerous.
"Mr. Volkov," she replied calmly.
She refused to look intimidated.
He gestured toward the seat across from him.
"Please."
She sat.
Their eyes locked.
Neither looked away.
"You're bold," Ivan said.
"You're intrusive," she replied smoothly.
A faint shadow of amusement passed through his eyes.
"Straight to the point. I respect that."
"Why are you interfering with Adrian's company?"
No small talk. No games.
Ivan leaned back slightly.
"Because he's incompetent."
"That's not a sufficient reason."
"It is for me."
She studied him carefully.
"You're not doing this for business alone."
It wasn't a question.
It was an observation.
A slow silence followed.
Then Ivan spoke.
"He is not good enough for you."
The words landed heavily between them.
Cassiopeia's expression did not change, but something inside her shifted.
"You don't know me."
"I know enough."
"From what? Research?" she challenged.
"From watching."
The air changed.
Watching?
Her pulse quickened.
"In what way?"
Ivan's gaze softened for just a second before hardening again.
"In ways that don't matter."
That was not an answer.
Cassiopeia leaned forward slightly.
"You destroyed his partnerships."
"Yes."
"You redirected investors."
"Yes."
"You strengthened my company."
"Yes."
"Why?"
A pause.
Then calmly...
"Because this time, you will not fall."
Her heart skipped.
This time.
Her mind froze.
"What did you just say?"
Ivan realized it immediately.
A slip.
Small.
But dangerous.
He stood slowly.
"You're intelligent, Cassiopeia. You'll figure it out."
He moved toward the window, hands in his pockets.
She rose as well.
"Figure what out?"
He turned to face her fully now.
For the first time, the distance between them felt charged.
Heavy.
Intentional.
"I am not your enemy," he said quietly.
"And what are you?"
His eyes darkened.
"The only man in this city who will never betray you."
Silence.
Her chest tightened.
Those words felt too certain.
Too personal.
Too real.
She swallowed slowly.
"You speak as if you know my future."
Ivan stepped closer.
Not touching.
Just close enough that she could feel his presence.
"I know men like Adrian," he said.
"That's not what I asked."
Their eyes locked again.
The tension between them was no longer polite.
It was dangerous.
"You should stay away from me," she said softly.
"That would be wise."
"Yes."
"But I won't."
Her breath caught.
He moved back slightly, restoring distance.
"Dinner is getting cold," he said smoothly, as if the charged moment had never happened.
Control.
He had complete control.
But as Cassiopeia sat back down, she realized something unsettling.
For the first time since her rebirth…
She had met something she could not predict.
And that terrified her more than death ever had.
Ivan watched her quietly as she picked up her glass.
This was only the beginning.
He had stepped out of the shadows.
And now there was no going back.
