Chapter 5:Dinner With Ghosts

648 Words
The house was too quiet. Cassiopeia Lawrence stood at the top of the staircase, her fingers resting lightly on the railing. Below, the dining room was glowing with warm golden lights. It looked peaceful. It wasn't. Tonight, Adrian would sit at that table. The same man who had once sworn to protect her. The same man who had smiled while poisoning her life. In her past life, she would have spent hours choosing a dress, nervously rehearsing what to say, hoping to impress him. Tonight, she wore black. Simple. Elegant. Unbothered. A soft knock echoed through the hall downstairs. "He's here!" Seraphina's voice rang out, overly bright. Cassiopeia closed her eyes briefly. Calm. Controlled. Untouchable. She descended the stairs slowly. Each step steady. Each breath measured. Adrian was already inside when she reached the last step. Tall. Handsome. Perfectly dressed. His smile was warm when he saw her. That same smile. For a split second, her chest tightened. Then the memory returned,Seraphina in his arms… whispers behind closed doors… the humiliation… the betrayal. The tightness vanished. "Cassie," Adrian said softly. "You look beautiful tonight." In the past, she would have blushed. Now she simply nodded. "Thank you." That was all. No shy smile. No lingering eye contact. Adrian blinked. Seraphina noticed. They all sat at the table. Small talk filled the air. Her father discussed business. Seraphina laughed too loudly at Adrian's jokes. Cassiopeia ate quietly. Observing. Measuring. Every glance. Every movement. Adrian kept looking at her. As if trying to figure something out. Finally, he spoke. "You've been distant lately." Seraphina stiffened slightly. Cassiopeia dabbed her lips with a napkin before responding. "Have I?" Her tone was calm. Too calm. Adrian leaned forward. "You didn't call me back yesterday." "I was busy." "With what?" Their eyes locked. In that moment, Adrian felt it. Something unfamiliar. This wasn't the girl who used to cling to him. This wasn't the girl who trusted him blindly. There was distance now. And something else. Awareness. "I didn't realize I needed to report my schedule," she said gently. The table went silent. Her father frowned slightly. Seraphina's smile faltered. Adrian forced a laugh. "That's not what I meant." "Then what did you mean?" Her voice remained soft. But sharp. Like silk wrapped around a blade. Seraphina suddenly felt uncomfortable. This was wrong. Cassiopeia wasn't supposed to speak like this. Wasn't supposed to challenge him. Wasn't supposed to look… superior. Adrian studied her face carefully. And for the first time... He felt uncertain. Outside. Across the street. The black car was parked in the shadows. Ivan Volkov watched through the tinted glass. His gaze was fixed on the dining room window. On her. She sat straight. Composed. Cold. Not the fragile girl he once remembered. Not the girl who died with betrayal in her eyes. This version was different. Stronger. And far more dangerous. His phone vibrated once. A message from one of his men. "The investment deal Adrian is pursuing can be blocked." Ivan's thumb hovered over the screen. He glanced up at Cassiopeia again. Adrian leaned closer to her. Too close. Ivan's jaw tightened slightly. He typed one word. "Do it." Across the city, a business opportunity Adrian had been counting on quietly began to collapse. Ivan leaned back in his seat. No one would hurt her again. Not while he was breathing. Inside the dining room, Adrian's phone buzzed. He glanced at the screen. His expression changed. "What is it?" Seraphina asked quickly. "Nothing," he said, but his voice lacked confidence. Cassiopeia noticed. Interesting. Very interesting. She didn't know why. But for some reason.... She felt like the universe had just shifted in her favor. Outside, the black car's engine started. Ivan gave the house one last look before driving away. His voice was low. "Play your game, Cassiopeia Lawrence." A faint smile touched his lips. "I'll control the board."
