The History of Our Ancestors VOL. I He began with moss and slowly spread it throughout the planet, covering every inch of rock with soft greenery. As it spread, the volcanic soil that made up the ground began altering. The land now infused with vegetation slowly sprouted tiny blades of grass. The grass grew everywhere, taking the moss's place except where the mineral levels were too high, making it impossible for grass to grow in these areas. Instead of producing grass, it broke down the rock formations that made up the vast canyons. As it did this, the moss altered and its pigment changed colour from luscious green to bloody red and burnt orange, which gave the moss the ability to corrode the rocks it covered. This action created sand; the sand was blood red in colour due to the moss's new colouring, which gave the sand its colour. Over time, the canyon's depths slowly filled with sand. After a few thousand years, the moss had corroded many layers of rock formation until it reached some jewels that had formed there. They, too, were corroded, creating ruby-coloured sand that glittered in the sunlight. While the canyon's depths filled with sand and the land's newfound greenery began developing seeds that held new plant types within, Necalli designed the plants in his domain where he grew them and harvested the seeds, shrunk them, and then placed them within the blades of grass so when the time was right the grass would push the seeds out through their roots into the soil so they could grow. However, they could not be planted until the volcanic fumes in the air had been reduced. The fumes were too strong for the seeds to handle, whereas the grass had the moss genes to help live in such a climate, the seeds did not. Necalli taught them how to feed off the fumes that filled the air from the volcanic eruptions so, in turn, they could clean it for the awaiting seeds. He taught them how to open their pores, which could only be seen through a microscope, to inhale the fumes. Throughout the day, with the help of the sun’s rays, they will absorb the carbon from the air. When they were full, they would use the sun's warmth and process it into food for nourishment. Once they had fed, all that remained was clean air, so at night, their pores would open again to release the now clean air. Necalli taught them how to use the moon's cool rays to help them exhale air from their leaves into the atmosphere, thus creating oxygen. The cycle continued. Day by day, the air became cleaner. Because of this, the atmosphere began to change. Thanks to the plants' constant feasting, their combined efforts had cleaned the air enough for weather patterns to form. First came the rain, then hail, snow, thunder/lightning, scorching heat, and gale-force winds. The weather was so unpredictable that one minute there would be a blizzard freezing the land, and the next minute, thunder and lightning would assault the ground with their strikes. The weather was aggressive in its ever-changing state, yet plant life had persevered through every type of storm. Two thousand years later, the plants had cleaned the atmosphere enough that the weather calmed, became less aggressive and started becoming predictable, giving the seedlings a chance to be embedded in the soil and sprout up into saplings. Over time, the saplings grew, the weather stabilised, and the vast canyons began filling with water, creating rivers, lakes, ponds, and the sea. Plant life had developed further thanks to the temperamental weather at the start. The now dominating waters carried clumps of fertilised soil into the canyon’s depths, allowing soil and sand to combine, starting the beginning of aquatic plant life. It took eighty-three years for the sea to fill. As it filled, the water became salty, the salt changed the shorelines from dirt to white and yellow sand, thus creating beaches. Yet the red water never changed the white sand to red even to this day no one knows why, even the best scientist cannot explain the phenomenon. Now that the ocean was full it helped to regulate the weather patterns which created the seasons. So, in the beginning, there was moss than grass and trees without seasons, but once spring, summer, autumn, and winter were born they helped plant life to thrive and develop new types with every passing year. Without them, the land would never have created flowers, shrubs, herbs etc. Five hundred years later Nebula was home to a thriving woodland with of all kinds of trees, tall grass decorated in flowers of all colour’s shapes and sizes, rapid rivers, flowing streams, beautiful meadows, and enormous lakes with a stunning ocean to top it off. Necalli was happy with the way the world looked but was not satisfied, he felt instead of having one gigantic vast island he wanted multiple. This would also give him a chance to see if the little bit of life that started could adapt in different climates. And so, Necalli caused an extreme earthquake that tore up the land. Instead of the land being one he split it into five and spread them throughout the world. One of the five he raised to the heavens and placed it gently on a cloud to keep it afloat. Now satisfied with the way he separated the island into many he left the plants to adapt to their new climates to see how they would cope. Eighteen thousand years later the plants had adapted to their new surroundings, those sent to the north learned to cope in the freezing temperatures and even learnt to maintain the chilly weather to prevent it from rising. On first arrival to keep warm they combined their roots together to share warmth, as their soil changed over the years to solid black ice. Their colours and patterns had changed to blend in with their new wintery home, their colours varied from blues to whites and silvers. They shared the same patterns as snowflakes for flowers and icicle shapes for trees, but the colours were specific for each type. Large flowers tended to be light shades of blue, tree leaves were always sliver and flowers that grew on the tree’s trunk were white. The colouring was caused by the moon’s rays where the aquamarine dyed them and set the patterns and the climate was caused by the moon’s icy aura. But the strangest thing was that they had completely changed their body chemistry because now flower stems, tree trunks and branches were completely made of ice. They were a beautiful deep dark cobalt blue that stood out against the pure white of the snow that blanketed the land creating an icy forest. Although the land is made of pure ice plant life continued to grow only now, they survive off the cold air by feeding on it and converting it to warmth that they share in their roots. This allowed them to live without the need for water or carbon and they were still able to produce fruit to use for compost as did most plants. During the day, the sun light made the wintery wonderland dazzle and glow while the snowy ground was shrouded in a cool mist that we know now as ‘The Glacial Forrest'. Those sent to the south adapted to blazing heats that were created by the sun’s fiery aura, over time the soil dried up as did the plants. It became a wasteland where nothing could grow but the plants found a way to survive without being watered for months. At first, they tried absorbing fluid from the sea whilst separating the salt from the water with their roots, they did this by combining their roots together and stretching them to the edge of the land they lived on. It worked at first, but the soil was affected by the salt that caused the dirt to turn into orange sand, thanks to the ruby colour of the sea and the amber rays from the sun thus creating the ‘Citrus desert’ where only the sweetest fruits can grow. The plants took what was needed from the sea until they were able to alter their climate slightly, doing this made it so that it would rain three times a year. It rained once in the spring while it did the plants would maintain as much water as possible, they even developed little sacks to store the water, smaller plants had three, medium ones had two large sacks and huge ones had five large sacks. The water was collected through a little mouth-like opening that would only open when it rained. The sacks were made from leaves they had converted into orbs; they turned the leaves inside out to keep the water cold then used two bigger leaves to form the outside of the orb. They thickened the outer layer so the heat couldn’t dry up their water supply, in the summery months there would be two downpours that lasted two days, one at the start of the summer and one near the end. This was due to the summer being incredibly hot so they would need far more water to survive. They also developed a special sack that filled itself with sand, this was made from their roots because they were no longer needed the way they first started out. When it was full it would close and only open again when the downpour days would occur. Then it would close until the last day of summer, throughout winter the sack would convert the sand/water mixture into food where they would only feed once a year, since the sand was once soil it still carried its nutritional value which helped them flourish in the desert. They did not need it to rain during the autumn and winter months as the temperature was cool live in. As for the trees they survived the same way, but grew taller and slimmer, their leaves grew and stretch until they were enormous. One leaf alone could be turned into a hammock that could hold at least six Astralights at once. They provided shade for the flowers and cacti. The flowers ranged from bright orange to deep purples and ultra-green that blended in with the desert, the tree’s bark turned red like the sea and the cacti were a mixture of greens and yellows, some were square shaped some round. The cacti used their roots to create ponds to collect rainwater that would develop an oasis for plants that was not able to develop the way the others had. They also converted their water into an extremely sweet drink, they would release some through the spikes that grew from their roots into the oasis water supply this helped to keep the smaller plants fed and watered much longer. To east the plants adapted to a more humid climate, this is the effect of the cold north and heat from the south constantly pushing against each other causing a humid climate. It rained far more often than they were used to so the trees would soak up more water than normal so, the flowers and other smaller plants would not drown. But there was only so much the tall trees could do since it would rain five days straight every week, once the rain stopped the sun would heat up the area creating steam. This softened the bark, leaves and petals of everything there. Over time the plant learnt to hydrate with a limited amount of water using their outer layers. In doing this they soaked up ten times the amount of nutrients needed through their roots, this gave the plants a growth spurt causing them to grow larger with thicker stems and leaves. This also caused them to change the way they look, flowers and trees evolved from a woodland forest to a tropical jungle. Eventually, the trees grew so tall and large that should anyone attempt to climb one it would take a week before reaching the top by hand. Their leaves were so thick that they collected the rainwater above the canopy and only after the second rain spell would it be heavy enough to break through the canopy and reach the ground. Once it did the heat would create a steam effect making everything moggy and damp the flowers grew abnormally large alongside the trees even to this day plants in ‘Rainfall Jungle’ continues to grow. As they grow their leaves and petals grow more and more vibrant with each passing year, during the months of spring when the flowers first bloom, they create a spectacular light show where their vibrant colours shun through the raindrops when the sun hits. Colours of all kinds would shine against the deep green leaves and dark brown trees. At the west of Nebula high above the ocean in the heavens themselves was the land we know today as ‘The Celestial Plains’ hidden amongst the clouds. The land never moved from its position it stayed motionless in the west. The land is surrounded by a barrier of thick clouds encircling it, above the island were clear skies so plants could still receive exposure from the sun the moon and every kind of weather including seasons. Due to the location of the hovering island, the climate's temperature was chilly, like Rainfall Jungle it too was located between the north and south. But because it was placed among the clouds it could not take on a humid climate like the jungle. Because the vegetation had almost direct exposure from both sun and moon, they evolved completely different from the other lands. Due to the chilly atmosphere, it covered the flora in constant frost, during the day the frost would melt creating beads of dew, during the night the beads would crystalise and slowly be covered by frost once again. Once the moon had passed and was no longer exposing the plants with its rays, they were left gazing at the stars in the dark of night. Within the first few decades of the island's new home, the land's shape began to change more and more with every season. The land itself became rounder, the river flowed from the top of the mountain that sat in the centre of the island, the river ran down both sides of the mountain until it reached the edge of the island creating never-ending waterfalls. The waterfalls experienced the same exposures as the plant and began changing. This continued for ten thousand years until one day they could no longer be covered in frost, they learnt to retain the suns warmth throughout the day to keep them warm at night. They also learnt to mimic the patterns of stars and galaxies they gazed at for so many years, by doing this they managed to change the leaves on the trees from green to black with pure white dots just like the stary night. The flowers became the same dark-coloured background, but the petals were decorated with different constellations while their centres mimicked the vast galaxies. Some flowers and trees developed that way while others mimicked the clouds that surrounded them, their pigment changed to pure white and would always change depending on the weather. If it was sunny, they became a creamy white, if it was thundering, they became a dark grey with flashing colours that matched the thunderbolts etc. As for the flower stems and leaves, they turned a dark green that would glitter, and the tree stumps became dark brown that also glittered, the grass however would change daily into the many different colours of the galaxies while the rivers did the same since it had constant contact with the soil thus creating ‘Galaxy Falls’. They continued to feed the same way but sometimes chose to live off moonlight since they developed a way to convert moonlight into feed. As for the remaining piece, Necalli positioned it at the centre of the world. It is said that he kept it there because it was nestled directly above his heart, according to legend if we drilled straight down, we would arrive at the centre of the planet where his beating heart resides. If you were to try this on any other continent the outcome would be different, but no one knows why. The last piece was the largest of them all, although the other lands were large the centre was by far the largest. It was the only part of the world with a volcano, although it is true that the other lands have volcanoes of their own the centre is the only one still active. According to legend - “So long as this volcano lives so lives Necalli, should the flames grow cold and die so will Necalli and our world with him.” In modern day we have no reason to believe this is the case only that science has stated that the centre of our planet is a giant sphere of scolding hot fire, which is fuelled by the oil that seeps through the layers of solid rock that which lie beneath the soil. The heat that emanates from the volcano helps with regulating the atmosphere's temperature, weather, seasons, and to keep vegetation alive. Only when the core overheats will the volcano irrupt to expel all the excess heat. The volcano irrupts every one hundred years, it also helps fertilize the soils worldwide with its volcanic ash, this is because the ash is packed with nutrients and minerals that is carried by the wind to nourish the land which then produces greater yield. The ash however can be toxic to Astralights, should it be inhaled and embedded in the lungs it would start to nourish the body, but the nutrients carried are so concentrated that it becomes too overwhelming for the body causing poisoning from over nourishment, but it is perfectly safe for plant life. The volcano was surrounded by a mote of lava that would have spread throughout the entire land had it not been for the river blocking its path, the river cooled the lava creating a wall that keeps the lava at bay. What little greenery that once surrounded the volcano all but disintegrated, but the plants kept fighting in vain to populate the land despite the scorching heat. Necalli was baffled by the plant’s determination to exist that he decided to help them. He fused them with the lava itself so they could thrive in the harsh heat. The trees became living rocks with lava veins running up them and their leaves looked like any other except they were now made of magma. As they fall during the autumn season they slowly withered into ash before hitting the ground just like any other. As for the flowers only one type now grows there, their stems and leaves were made from smooth solid obsidian that looked like delicate glass. The flower itself has eight petals, four were long burnt orange colour that contrasts with the four short black petals. In the centre was a smaller flower shaped like a lotus made from magma that glowed and changed colours from yellow to orange to red and black. After some time, the volcano was populated with trees and flowers, only these types could survive without water, they purely lived off the lava that flowed beneath them. Back then the volcano became known as ‘Necalli’s heart’ but in modern day nobody calls it that. On the other side of the giant river that blocks the lavas advances is the wetland, because of the scorching heat coming from the fiery rock the wetland became foggy and steamy. The temperature started rising to combat this the trees began lifting themselves out of the water so only the roots would touch the watery ground to change the atmosphere. Using their leaves, they tried to make it rain to reduce the rising temperature, however they were unsuccessful. They began to dry and shrivel up from the rising heat, Necalli was unhappy by this, so he made it rain for four months. This reduced the temperature but also flooded the land, because of the extreme flooding the trees ascended higher all the while gaining the ability to make it rain when needed. All the other plant life became damp and mossy, flowers that inhabited the ground changed entirely into mushrooms of all types but retained their original colouring from when they were flowers. Some grow near the base of the trees, others chose to grow around pools of water while the rest prefer the dark damp corners near rocks. Any remaining flowers now grow from the vines that are attached to the tree branches high above the watery ground. The vines attach themselves to the tree and burrow the roots into bark to absorb food from the tree itself since they do not get much sunlight. Flowers learnt to fuse their cells with the vines to avoid drowning, they grow and reproduce needing little sunlight because of this only one type of flower grows there in five different colours lime, peach, plum, violet and ice blue. Although they are the same type of lily with different colours, they all have different properties lime could cure illnesses, peach could cure physical disabilities, plum cured blood infections, violet helped with fertility, and ice blue helped with mental health. Other than that, most of the surfaces were covered in moss except for one tree, this one grew larger than the others at the centre of the wetland, this tree became known as the ‘mother tree’. This one was connected to everything in the wetland, after three thousand years the mother tree became a towering titan over the wetlands. Its purpose was to create rain when needed, to create huge amounts of foods for the ones that get little sunlight, since the mother's roots are connected to everything, she can tell which plants need more support. She is also the only tree that can grow all five types of lilies in such a large quantity. With the help of the mother tree the wetlands developed rivers and streams to assist with cooling, in modern-day the wetlands are better known as the ‘waterlogged swamp’. To the east past, the swamp stands the twin mountains, their peaks are permanently snowy from their great hight. Beyond them lies the ‘rocky gauge’ where many mountains reside none as large as the twins but tall nonetheless, to get to the other side of the gauge or to any of the mountains you must navigate through the intricate stony maze. Past the gauge is a towering stone wall with a series of caves which lead underground to different parts of the ‘cavern of gems’, it is the only place to hold billions upon billions of different types of gems. It also houses various metals such as steel, copper, iron etc, many types of stone and a huge deposit of coal, even in modern day after we haven’t even farmed a quarter of amount. Because the gauge was nothing but stone nothing could grow there, however there is one cave that leads to a cavern beyond the stone wall, inside the cavern is a field size room with a no ceiling with an enormous circle of rocky flooring, surrounding the circle was a mote of crystal-clear water filled by the rain. Along the walls were numerous gems covering every inch of the walls and when the sunlight hits the cavern just right it is filled with colours of every kind dancing along the water making it dazzle. With the rainfall coming through the open ceiling over the years grass started to grow on the stone circle. Over time seeds carried by the wind from all kinds of flowers settled in the cave and started to grow. Since there was no soil for them to embed in, they found a way to fuse their roots with the growing grass. Once they started growing, they struggled to feed but they found a way to feed off the minerals in the stone. In doing so they managed to thrive, as time passed the flowers grew to fruition but along the way they changed. The minerals transformed them into gems giving the name ‘cavern of the living gems’, Necalli was so mesmerized by their efforts that he gave them ever-lasting life, should you pick one it will last forever, never wilting never fading. But if you happen to pic one a new one will grow back in its place the same as the last never changing. On the opposite side of the land is the largest beach, with scarlet red sand bridging the land with the ruby sea. Above stand tall cliffs with many paths leading to the beach, although all the beaches are connected to the sea ‘scarlet cove’ is the only one with red sand all the others have either white or yellow coloured sand. No matter how much the sea washes over them they never change colour, they say the reason scarlet cove has red sand when the other do not is because Necalli loved how the sea was ruby-coloured and wanted a large part of the land to match. At the south of the centre were vast fields, soothing meadows, and the largest forest on the whole of Nebula with millions of types of trees, flowers, fungi, and grass. The forests were separated by wide open fields with rivers of all sizes bending and twisting in all kinds of directions shaping the land. Dotted around the many forests were various lakes and ponds of every size thus making up the land we know today as ‘The mother land’. Overall, there were five forests: 1. Starlight woods - where the tree bark is as black as night with snow white leaves to match, this forest is known for its dark purple flower that only blooms in autumn, unlike the others that tend to bloom in spring. At centre of the woods there is a saltwater lake where black and white flowers grow beneath the water, unlike most they cannot live above it if they were to be removed, they would dry out. This woodland gets its name because at night the white leaves glow to illuminate paths through the land almost like the night sky. 2. Iron forest – the trees are tall and slender, yet they are as strong as iron, their bark dark brown, their leaves the colour of iron. The forest has many streams flowing through it, so the terrain is quite soft and damp, because of the dampness this forest is the main source of fungi and due to the overwhelming amount flowers chose not to grow there. 3. Forest of petals –The surrounding forest is made up of navy-coloured bark trees who’s leaves change colour every season, one season they may be pink the next they will be orange, the flowers that grow on these trees also change colour, they become the colour of the leaves from the previous seasons. So, if the leaves were red and are now green the flower will then be red followed by green, in some seasons they would be a mixture of colours instead of solid ones. This forest also surrounds a meadow full of wildflowers, some large, some small, somewhere they have bred with others to make a new breed of flower. In spring these flowers will bloom and wait until summer to shed their springtime petals to reveal what they truly look like, creating a shower of petals hence the name forest of petals. 4. Emerald meadow – everything in this meadow the trees, flowers, even the ponds of water. The meadow has wide yet short emerald-coloured trees, most trees are gigantic in hight but in this meadow, they are only half the height and never grown any taller. They have many smaller leaves than most that bunch up together like bushes, the flowers grow in clusters near the roots of the trees, they do not have leaves of their own, so they use the stem to connect to the tree's leaves through the roots. As for the ponds, they are small with dyed water, they also hold all the nutrients for the plant life who feed off it through the soil. 5. Silver grove – the silver grove is at the very heart of the centre; its trees are silver in colour with pale pink leaves decorated with clear royal blue flowers at the base. The grass surrounding the area is a pure blinding white, dotted around the ground are tiny gold and bronze flowers. In the middle of the grove, there is a pond with cracks spreading from it. It is no ordinary pond as it was filled with silver water and no one can touch it, should you place your hand in the silk-like water you would not feel a thing. The water never rises no matter how much it rains and no matter how hot it is it never reduces. (Silver grove came at a later date, according to legend this is where Necalli first entered the mortal realm which purified the grove and caused it to change colours and the water that occupies the pond is from his godly realm, but no one knows what the grove originally looked like.) And thus, this made up the lands of Nebula, content he left the land to prosper as it was. But after several millennia he felt like something was missing from his world. End of chapter 2
