The Midnight Sounds
Chapter 10: An Uninvited Echo
The quiet intimacy of the Delta safe house shattered into jagged fragments the moment the lock on the front door clicked.
It wasn't the slow, clumsy pick of an amateur, nor was it the heavy hydraulic ram of a tactical raid. It was the sharp, mechanical turn of a master key.
Elias reacted with terrifying speed. Before the heavy oak door could even swing open three inches, he disengaged from Evelyn, pulled up his sweatpants, and scooped his suppressed pistol off the table in one fluid, deadly motion. He shoved Evelyn behind his broad frame, shielding her completely as he leveled the weapon at the threshold.
"Move a muscle and I end you," Elias growled, his voice dropping into that icy, lethal register that made the room’s temperature plummet.
A woman stepped casually through the door, closing it behind her with her heel. She didn't look threatened by the gun pointed at her chest. In fact, a slow, cat-like smile spread across her lips.
She was stunning in a dangerous, sharp-edged way. Standing near five-foot-ten in sleek leather trousers and a damp, dark trench coat, her copper hair fell in dark, wet waves over her shoulders. Her piercing green eyes swept over the room, taking in the roaring wood stove, Elias’s bare, sweat-glistening chest, and Evelyn— flushed, breathless, and wrapped in Elias’s oversized flannel shirt on the edge of the oak table.
"Is that any way to welcome an old partner, Elias?" the woman said, her voice a sultry, smoky purr with a faint European accent. She reached up, slowly pulling off her wet gloves, entirely unbothered by the barrel of his gun. "Especially when I just burned two of the Maestro's border trackers to get here?"
Elias didn't lower the weapon. His jaw tightened, the muscle ticking beneath his stubble. "Nadia. You shouldn't be here."
"And yet, here I am," Nadia replied smoothly, stepping deeper into the room. She tossed a small, silver memory drive onto the table near Evelyn's knee. "And lucky for you I am. You thought Julian only left a signal beacon in the alley? He leaked your Delta coordinates to the Maestro's execution squad twenty minutes ago. I had to personally intercept them at the bridge."
Evelyn's heart thudded violently against her ribs. She pulled the flannel shirt tight around her bare thighs, her eyes darting between Elias and this mysterious newcomer. The air in the room was suffocatingly thick, instantly charged with a volatile mix of danger, history, and a sudden, sharp spike of jealousy.
"Who is she, Elias?" Evelyn asked, her voice steady despite the adrenaline spiking through her blood.
Nadia turned her emerald eyes onto Evelyn, assessing her with a cool, predatory gaze that made Evelyn's skin prickle. "I am Nadia," she purred, walking over to the wood stove and extending her long, slender hands toward the heat. "His former partner in the Maestro's syndicate. And occasionally... his much more adventurous pastime."
Elias lowered the gun slightly, though his posture remained rigid. "Nadia and I worked together to breach the Maestro's vault three years ago. We ended things. Permanently."
"Did we?" Nadia countered softly, casting a provocative, lingering glance over Elias's broad, sculpted torso. Her gaze anchored on the dark hair trailing down his stomach, her eyes gleaming with explicit intent. "I don't recall signing any final papers, Elias. And judging by the heat in this room, you haven't lost your appetite."
"She's playing you," Evelyn warned, stepping off the table, her bare feet hitting the cool floorboards. She stood her ground, refusing to be intimidated by the taller woman. "She tracked us."
Nadia chuckled, a low, melodic sound that oozed confidence. She took a slow step toward Elias, ignoring Evelyn completely. She reached out, her long, manicured fingers lightly dragging across the hard plane of Elias's chest, leaving a trail of goosebumps in their wake.
"I saved your lives," Nadia whispered, stepping into Elias's personal space until her heavy breasts pressed against his chest through her open coat. She tilted her head up, her lips hovering mere inches from his jaw. "The Maestro wants us all dead now, Elias. The girl, you, me. He knows we have the primary frequency keys."
Elias didn't pull away from Nadia's touch, though his dark eyes remained guarded. "What are you proposing, Nadia?"
"Survival," Nadia murmured, her hand sliding lower, down the center of his stomach to rest possessively over the bulge in his sweatpants. She didn't hide her intention; her palm cupped him directly, feeling the residual heat and hard length still lingering from his encounter with Evelyn. "And maybe... a little celebration for making it out of the city alive."
Nadia turned her head slightly, looking back over her shoulder at Evelyn with a dark, wicked smirk.
"Unless, of course, your little musician friend is too delicate to share?" Nadia taunted softly, her fingers stroking Elias through his clothes with an agonizingly slow, rhythmic pressure. "The Maestro's network takes three people to override at the central node. We need each other tonight, Elias. In every possible way."
Evelyn felt a hot wave of blood rush to her face. The sheer audacity of the woman was intoxicatingly filthy, yet the raw, explicit tension filling the small room was undeniable. Elias stood between them, his breathing heavy, his dark eyes shifting from Nadia's tempting, wicked smile to Evelyn's flushed, defiant face.
"Evelyn," Elias rasped, his voice thick with a dark, dangerous hunger as Nadia's hand worked over him. "Decision's yours. We lock her out... or we pull her into the fire with us."
