He was kneeling in my dirt.
Alpha Damien Blackwood. The most feared Alpha in the region. On his knees, planting crops in Moon Crest Territory like a common worker.
I stood on the balcony and watched.
Three days.
For three days he’d done exactly what I told him. No complaints. No excuses.
It was infuriating.
"Alpha Carter?" My beta, Aria, came up beside me. "The Silver Moon wolves are asking for extra rations. They say the work is too hard."
"They can eat less," I said without looking away from Damien. "Or they can go back to their dying pack."
Aria hesitated. "And him?"
Damien wiped sweat from his brow. His black shirt was stuck to him. He looked... tired. Not the cold, perfect Alpha I remembered. Just a man.
"He stays," I said. "Until the curse is broken."
"And then?"
I finally looked at her. "And then he leaves. And never comes back."
The lie tasted bitter.
Because every night, when the moon was high, I could feel it.
The bond.
Faint. Like a thread that wouldn’t snap.
Thor was calling to Cora. And Cora was answering.
_Stupid wolf._
"Get him," I told Aria. "Healing session starts in 1 hour."
*DAMIEN’S POV*
My hands were bleeding.
I hadn’t done manual labor in 10 years.
Now I was digging trenches under the hot sun while my own wolves watched from the barracks.
Humiliating.
But not as humiliating as what happened last night.
Luna had made me heal a sick pup.
"Use your hands," she’d said. "Channel what little power you have left."
I’d put my hands on the pup and felt it. The curse. Black and rotten.
And then her hand had covered mine.
"Like this," she whispered. Her skin was cool against mine.
Silver light had poured from both of us. The pup’s breathing evened out.
When it was done, she’d pulled away instantly. Like I burned her.
"Good," she’d said. "Do it again tomorrow."
No thank you. No acknowledgment.
Just... orders.
"Damien."
Aria’s voice. Luna’s beta.
"Alpha Carter wants you for healing."
I stood, wiping dirt on my pants. "Lead the way."
The healing room was in the back of the main house. Clean. Full of herbs and moonlight.
Luna was already there. Standing by a table with a boy on it. Maybe 8 years old. Feverish.
She didn’t look at me when I came in.
"Close the door," she said.
I did.
"Silver Moon Pack has been cursed for 3 years," she said, finally meeting my eyes. "The curse feeds on rejection. On broken bonds. It’s in the water, the soil, the blood."
"Can you break it?" I asked.
"I can," she said. "But it will take time. And it will hurt."
"Do it."
She moved to the boy. "This is one of yours. He’s been sick for 2 weeks."
I looked at the kid. He was so small. "Can you save him?"
Instead of answering, she grabbed my wrist and pulled my hand to the boy’s forehead.
The second we touched, it happened.
Heat.
Silver light exploded between our palms.
The bond flared to life like someone poured gasoline on it.
_Mate. Mate. MATE._
Thor was losing his mind. Cora was answering.
I tried to pull away. Luna held on tighter.
"Don’t," she hissed. "If you break contact now, he dies."
So I stayed. Hand over hand with her. Feeling her power pour into me, and mine into her.
The boy’s fever broke. Color came back to his face.
When it was over, Luna yanked her hand back like she’d been burned.
"Get out," she said, voice shaking.
"What?"
"I said GET OUT!"
I left.
In the hallway, I pressed my back to the wall and tried to breathe.
My hand was still tingling from where she’d touched me.
Gods. I hated this.
Hated that she had power over me. Hated that I still wanted her.
*LUNA’S POV - THAT NIGHT*
I couldn’t sleep.
Because of him.
Because every time I closed my eyes, I felt his hand on mine. Strong. Warm.
_Stop it,_ I told Cora. _He doesn’t deserve us._
_But he’s hurting,_ Cora whined. _And we can heal him._
"No."
A knock at my door.
"Alpha Carter?" It was Marcus. "One of our wolves collapsed. The curse is spreading faster."
I cursed and threw on a robe.
In the east barracks, three Silver Moon wolves were on the ground. Shaking. Black veins crawling up their necks.
"They drank from the river," Marcus said. "Before we knew it was poisoned."
I looked around. Damien wasn’t here.
"Where’s Alpha Blackwood?"
"Sleeping, Alpha Carter."
I went to his room and threw the door open.
He was awake. Sitting on the bed, staring at the wall.
"What?" he asked, annoyed.
"Your wolves are dying. Get up."
He stood immediately. No argument.
In the barracks, I took charge. Silver light from my hands, pulling the curse out.
It was exhausting.
Halfway through, my knees buckled.
Strong arms caught me.
"Let me," Damien said quietly. He took my place, hands glowing faintly.
It wasn’t as strong as mine. But it helped.
We worked side by side for an hour. Saving them.
When it was done, I was drained.
Damien handed me water. "Here."
I took it without thinking. Our fingers brushed.
The bond sparked again.
"Don’t," I whispered.
"I’m not—" He cut off. "I’m sorry. For before. For all of it."
I looked at him. Really looked.
He had dark circles under his eyes. Dirt on his face. And he’d just spent an hour saving his people instead of sleeping.
"You’re not the same," I said.
"No," he agreed. "I’m not."
We stood there in silence. Too close.
Then I remembered.
He rejected me. In front of everyone.
I stepped back. "Get some rest, Alpha Blackwood. We start at dawn."
*DAMIEN’S POV - ONE WEEK LATER*
A week of this.
Work. Heal. Sleep. Repeat.
And every day, it got harder to remember why I hated her.
Because I didn’t.
I hated myself.
Tonight was different though.
Full moon.
Luna called everyone to the training field.
"We’re testing control," she announced. "The curse reacts to moonlight. If we can’t control our wolves tonight, we’ll never break it."
She looked at me. "You first, Alpha Blackwood."
I stepped into the circle. Thor was restless. The moon was pulling at him.
Shift.
Pain. Cracking bones. Fur.
I stood there as a massive black wolf, 6'4 in wolf form.
Luna was next.
She didn’t shift fully. Just her eyes. And claws. And the glow around her was blinding.
She was beautiful.
_Dangerous,_ I reminded myself.
"Fight me," she said.
"What?"
"You heard me. Fight me, Damien."
So I did.
We circled each other. Snapping, clawing. But neither of us drew blood.
Because this wasn’t about winning.
This was about control.
After 20 minutes, we both stopped. Panting.
Luna shifted back. Sweat on her skin, hair stuck to her face.
"Good," she said. "Tomorrow we do it again."
She walked away.
I stayed in wolf form a moment longer, watching her.
_She’s not weak,_ Thor said. _She’s stronger than all of us._
I knew.
*LUNA’S POV - THE DEAL*
On the 10th day, I called him to my office.
He came in, dirty and tired.
"Sit," I said.
He did.
"I’ve been studying the curse," I said. "It’s tied to you. Specifically to your rejection."
Damien’s face went blank.
"To break it completely," I continued, "you have to undo what you did."
"How?"
"You have to publicly claim me as your mate. Again. In front of witnesses. And then reject me again, but this time with respect. With an apology."
He stared at me. "That’s it?"
"That’s it," I lied.
The truth? The curse would break if he truly meant the apology. If he truly regretted it.
And if I could forgive him.
"I’ll do it," he said immediately.
"Why?" I asked. "You hated me."
"I was wrong," he said. Simple. "And my pack is dying."
I nodded. "Then we do it in 3 days. Full moon. At the border between our territories."
He stood to leave.
"Damien?"
He turned.
"Thank you," I said quietly. "For staying. For helping."
He looked surprised. Like no one had thanked him in years.
"You’re welcome, Alpha Carter."
And he left.
I sat there for a long time after.
The deal was set.
In 3 days, he would claim me and reject me.
And maybe, just maybe, both our packs would be free.
But what about us?
Cora whined. _Mate._
_I know,_ I told her. _But some bonds are better broken._
*DAMIEN’S POV - 3 DAYS LATER*
The border.
Hundreds of wolves from both packs watching.
Luna stood across from me in a white dress. Not torn this time. Clean. Powerful.
My heart was pounding.
The elder from Moon Crest stepped forward. "Alpha Damien Blackwood. Do you wish to claim Luna Carter as your mate?"
I looked at her. Really looked.
At the girl I’d thrown away. Who was now the strongest person I knew.
"Yes," I said. My voice carried. "I claim Luna Carter as my mate."
Gasps.
Luna’s eyes widened. She hadn’t expected me to say it like I meant it.
"And do you wish to reject her?" the elder asked.
I took a step forward.
"Luna," I said. "Three years ago, I was cruel to you. I was blind and stupid and I hurt you in the worst way possible. I called you weak. I called you trash. I broke the bond between us and I’ve regretted it every day since."
Silence.
"I can’t undo what I did," I continued. "But I can apologize. Publicly. And I can tell you now: You were never weak. You are the strongest person I’ve ever met. And if you never forgive me, I understand."
I turned to the elder. "I reject Luna Carter as my mate."
But it didn’t feel like rejection.
It felt like setting her free.
The sky cracked with lightning.
And then... light.
Silver light poured from the ground. From the trees. From Luna.
The curse was breaking.
Wolves howled.
When it faded, Luna was standing there, glowing.
She looked at me.
For the first time in 3 years, she didn’t look cold.
"Thank you," she whispered.
And walked away.
