My eyes fluttered as I heard classical music that sounded like lullabies in my ears.
The room was spinning and it took me seconds to focus my eyes and realize where the hell I was. There were screams and yells but they were not the sound of someone who was in pain. There were colorful decorations and flowers everywhere. A party? was literally in the middle of the dance floor, with the people dancing all around me like I was some kind of cult sacrifice. Someone had put a mask on me and the first thing I did was to snatch it away from my face.
I was frozen in shock. I looked down and found myself wearing a ballgown dress and I realized everyone was wearing the same Elizabethan style with masks and ridiculous wigs I used to watch in historical movies. I would think I traveled back in time only if I didn’t see one of the ladies browsing on her mobile phone.
The ceiling of the place was high and the whole place was spacious enough for me to estimate that there were fifty people surrounding me.
“W-What is h-happening?” I breathed, and my chest hurt as if someone had hit me with a mallet. It was so hard to breathe. My body was so heavy and I couldn’t move…
“Stand up, lazy feet. The soon-to-be Alpha wants you in his room!” one of the masked people in the hall grabbed me by my arms and dragged me up the stairs. I was too terror-stricken to fight, too weak to resist, until they led me to a room with a huge wooden door and threw me inside it. My petite body landed with a thud on the cold, concrete floor.
“You look amazing in that dress, little bunny.” A sultry, soft voice distracted me from the pain in my shoulders, “I’m sorry I have to drag you into this but you are just so desperate for my attention that you are willing to risk going into that creepy and abandoned amusement park.”
It was Lawrence. Lawrence Wright, wearing the same ridiculous padded sleeves and weird ruffled undershirts. But what caught my attention most was the mockery in his voice. Why did he sound like that? That evil grin on his lips scared me to the bone.
“What is happening, Lawrence? Was it you who hit me on the head?!” I cried to him as I watched him make his way towards me with slow, aching steps, “What is this?”
“Shhh… I just found out that you are my mate, Astrid. And I know you can feel it too. That’s why I have to bring you here. In my place,” Lawrence sniggered as he forced me to look him in the eyes after he pulled my face with his thumb and forefinger on my chin, “You know... I used to like you, Astrid. But as we got older, you also got so... boring.”
That last word felt like a cold knife that pierced through my chest, “Then why am I in here?! What do you want from me?”
Those electric blue eyes suddenly darkened and his stares grew cold as he leaned closer to me, his lips an inch away from mine, “Because you are not the she-wolf for me, Astrid. I am going to be the next Alpha of the Pack and I don’t deserve an Omega as a mate. Do you hear me?”
No…
Those cruel words felt as if someone poured cold water on me as I stared back at Lawrence.
“Come with me,” he growled in my ear as he dragged me out of the room and down the stairs, back to the mini stage where all the eyes of the people in the hall went on us.
All were curious and surprised. The spotlight blinded me as I suffered from multiple panic attacks. It was so humiliating to be put in front of all those people who laughed like I was some kind of freak in front of their eyes! I wanted to run—to hide away from their judging eyes. But Lawrence’s hand was tight around my wrist and there was no way to escape.
All I wanted was to be with Lawrence. My mate.
But I never thought it was a death wish.
“All ears on me!” Lawrence pushed me closer to him as I grimaced from the dazzling light of the spotlight that focused on both of us. “As I will make it certain that I will be the next Alpha of this pack now that my father is too old to handle or manage things on his own, I found out just a few days ago that I was mated to this woman!”
To my horror, Lawrence threw me in front of him and I fell on the floor. Everyone laughed, sneered, and yelled in contempt as Lawrence continued with his finger pointed at me like I was some kind of criminal, “It was disgusting that I was mated to this Omega in front of you. And tonight is the night you will witness how merciful and gracious I am as your next Alpha.”
My chest felt so tight and it was so hard to breathe. I was in a panic. The whole room was spinning and I didn’t know what was happening anymore. I gasped loudly when Lawrence grabbed me by my arm and pulled me up to show my face in front of every aristocrat, and the wealthy people I suspected were just his friends from the Campus where we studied.
He forced me to look at him in the eyes as he smirked at me—so evil that it brought terror right in the middle of my gut.
“I, Lawrence Wright, reject you, Astrid Addison, and never want to see your face again,” he snarled close to my ear, making the hairs on my nape rise in terror, “Now go out of here!”
One push and I almost stumbled down the stairs. Tears streamed down my face as I felt that unimaginable pain in my whole being, like something was tearing me into pieces down to my very soul. I gasped, desperate for air but Lawrence’s men were so ruthless, just like him, to drag me out of the place until I saw a bunch of girls giggling in the foyer and one of them was Lawrence’s rumored girlfriend.
Selena.
“Poor Astrid. You think you are so blessed by the moon goddess to be mated with a man like Lawrence Wright?” her eyes were glaring as she raised an eyebrow at me. There was pure disdain in her look. “You should have just stuck your nose in your books!”
A scream escaped from my swelling throat when Selena and her bunch of girl friends started pulling and ripping the dress I was wearing. The two guys who dragged me to the foyer watched and cheered for the girls.
“No, please stop!” I sobbed, feeling so weak and dizzy that I felt like fainting. One of them pushed me down the stairs and I rolled down on the muddy grass as heavy rain poured down on me. Less than a minute and I was already soaking wet.
“That’s what you get for assuming things, Astrid Addison.” Selena sniggered as she looked down at me, her eyes full of contempt. “Rot where you truly belong.”
Loud thunder crashed into the dark sky.
I felt half-dead already.
