Things I Do To Keep Her Safe

[ALPHA SIMON’s Point of View] I had no choice. It was a dangerous decision. The one I never wanted to make but I had to. Even my cousin Kathleen and my Beta, Sebastian, were not happy about it. They didn’t like Astrid’s sister at all. She was hard to communicate with. Never listens to explanations. But for Astrid’s peace of mind, I had to bring Maia to my island. Risk the information that this place exists. Risk the safety of my family. My mate’s. Maia Addison—the youngest daughter of one of the council members of the Alpha of the WolfClaw Pack. My father’s pack. One of the most fierce soldiers in their Gamma unit. Unlike Astrid, Maia was blessed with a strong and powerful wolf, which made her famous among the young fighters in their batch. I was even impressed when news came to me that she once defeated my brother in hand-to-hand combat, making her father so proud he forgot he had another daughter who also needed his love and attention. Astrid had become Maia’s shadow. And I knew how crazy Maia gets when it comes to protecting her older sister. That was why I had to take her here to my secret hiding place. A place no one in my family knows. There, sitting on a couch in front of my desk, Maia Addison was wearing a casual shirt and baggy old jeans. Her eyes were wary as she studied me with them, piercing and lethal. Kathleen and Sebastian were standing ten steps behind her. I told them I didn’t need their assistance but they insisted they couldn’t leave me alone with a she-wolf as dangerous as her. Not that I couldn’t defend myself, though. But as my Beta and my third in command, Sebastian and Kathleen had to make sure of my safety. As the Master Alpha of the Pack. “You have my sister.” It wasn’t a statement but an accusation. “Your brother almost killed her and now you are keeping her? What do you want from Astrid!” “She’s my mate.” My expression was as hard as steel. My gaze didn’t falter from her angry glare. “I know what my brother did was beyond forgiveness but Astrid... I promised I would protect her with my everything.” “He rejected her,” she snapped at me, her arms folded on her chest, “The same night she almost died!” “I know. I was there. I was the one who saved her from that place,” I told Maia with as much patience as I could muster. “She lost her memory about you and your father. About everyone. And her head is killing her whenever she forces herself to remember things.” “I have to take her back to the mainland. She doesn’t belong here!” Maia barked at me. Something snapped in my head and my temper slipped a bit as I hissed at her. “Just as I said, she is my mate. She belongs here. She belongs to me. You can’t take her with you to the mainland. Because if you do that, and once Lawrence finds out that Astrid was mated with me after he rejected her, you know what will happen to your sister. He will kill her. Just to have his revenge on me. Just to weaken me and take over my pack.” Maia scoffed. “And the fact that he will be your Alpha soon, I don’t think I can trust you for my mate’s safety.” I glared at her. “If you won’t give my sister back to me, then why did you invite me here in your small paradise?” Maia asked condescendingly, which made Kathleen grimace with hatred. “She’s looking for anyone who knew her before she lost her memories.” As I massaged the part between my eyes, I told her, “She had been having trouble sleeping, and I am starting to feel worried about her.” “You are only making things worse, Simon Wright.” My eyes darkened. “And what do you prefer me to do? Leave Astrid on the mainland, broken and humiliated? I told you what she did. She walked herself in front of that truck—” “It’s my fault,” she said, shaking her head. Her voice trembled. “I shouldn’t have let her go to that g*dd*mned place.” “We both know what kind of person Lawrence is. And you can’t blame yourself if Astrid didn’t listen to you. She was his mate. Unfortunately, Lawrence was too proud to accept her for being an Omega. I was there. But it was too late for me to stop things.” “So what’s your plan now? She had been missing for months on the mainland and everyone who knows her is already getting worried, despite me telling them she’s on vacation somewhere.” “As long as she’s my mate, I can’t let her go anywhere near Lawrence. He will use her against me. My brother despises me and he would take any opportunity just to hurt me and make my life miserable.” “I can’t believe Astrid is stuck in this situation.” Maia massaged her right temple with her fingers. “She is too weak and too vulnerable for this. She doesn’t deserve what Lawrence did to her!” “I apologize for what happened.” I answered as gently as I could, “I know how much you cared about your sister. That’s why you are the only person I told about what happened to her. You know she is safe here.” She studied the sincerity on my face and just stared at me for seconds before she spoke again. This time, no rage. “How is she?” “She’s in her room, sleeping. The medicine she takes makes her very sleepy. I guess that also helped with her headache.” Maia sat back on the couch with a heavy sigh. “Why don’t you just talk to your brother and make peace with him? Maybe that will stop him from putting a target on my sister’s back.” I smirked. “I had already tried that so many times, Maia Addison. Lawrence is not someone who would listen to any explanation after what father did to him. He’s broken beyond repair. And he blames me for it.” My brother. Lawrence wright. The man who broke Astrid’s heart and soul into millions of pieces—the reason she almost died the night after I saw her under the heavy rain. I was there when Astrid was taken forcefully into my brother’s mansion and rejected her in front of all the wealthy brats in their pack. I already knew Lawrence was up to something bad. But it was worse than I had thought. It was as if I didn’t know my brother anymore. Maybe it was the Moon Goddess’ calling when my feet brought me to that place. To my brother’s mansion, where he celebrated his birthday. I was ready to settle things with him—to talk to him about what really happened and why I had to leave the WolfClaw pack. But in that place, I saw Astrid. Poor Astrid, who went out of that building, soaked and barefootedly walking under the rain. Remembering all of it wrecked something in my chest. “Your sister needs you. And you have to talk to her. To make her feel she is not alone and to convince her that she has to put all her trust in me.” I asked her, almost in a pleading tone. A tone I never used unless I was desperate. “Maybe that will make the pain in her head go away.” “I don’t know, Simon Wright. If I could really trust you. But since you are my sister’s mate, then I will give you a chance to prove to me that you can take care of her. Keep her safe. And make sure Lawrence will never find out that she is your mate.” she gave me a threatening look. “Or goddess help me, I will kill you and your brother myself.” Sebastian and Kathleen snarled behind her. “If something happens to her, I will come to you myself to face that judgment,” I told her with a stoic look on my face. “Just make her believe she belongs here. With me.” “I can’t promise that,” she said, flipping her hair to the back of her shoulders and raising an eyebrow at me. “But I will do my best to make Astrid believe she is safe in this place.” “I guess that’s more than enough. As long as her headaches stop. As long as she stays here.” I answered, pain etched on my face. I would do everything just to make Astrid stay here with me. Even if I had to lie to her about everything.
