Chapter 6

Shen Hao Ming jolted awake to the persistent buzz of his phone. The immediate text message from headquarters detailed a brewing problem in New Ford. His long-lost cousin, Shen Fan Lai, had overstepped his bounds, arrogantly imposing an underhanded protection tax on all ships in New Ford—an audacious move that had never occurred under Hao Ming's watchful eye. He reluctantly pushed his body away from his sleeping wife, Lola. She stirred slightly but remained in deep sleep, her peaceful demeanor starkly contrasting the storm of anger brewing within Hao Ming. He swiftly dressed, donning a dark long-sleeve shirt, Italian designer pants, and his signature leader's gold ring. He resembled a dark lord rising from the abyss. With a determined stride, he took his phone and moved towards his car, accompanied by Chen Lin and Lin Tao. This time, Hao Ming gripped his cane tightly, its leather-bound handle a testament to his unyielding authority. The underground meeting area buzzed with tension as every member awaited Hao Ming's arrival. The moment he entered the room, an intimidating aura enveloped the space. The men stood, saluting him as Lord Shen. Hao Ming walked to the head of the table, and only after he sat did the others dare to follow suit. Lin Tao took the lead, opening the meeting that had been called to address the unauthorized protection tax imposed by Shen Fan Lai. Hao Ming's deadly glare swept across the room, silencing any murmurs of dissent. "Bring him in," he instructed Chen Lin. Earlier, Chen Lin’s subordinates had caught Fan Lai red-handed, accepting bribes. Now, he was detained in the basement of headquarters. As Chen Lin moved to carry out the order, the meeting room's doors burst open, and in rushed Fan Lai’s mother, Shen Xiuying, her face twisted with fury. She made a scene, accusing Hao Ming of abusing his power out of jealousy. "You are just envious of Fan Lai’s success and his new followers. This tax was his idea to gain more influence, and you’re trying to crush him for it. I’ll take this matter to the old Lang, your grandfather. He will have you removed as leader!" The crowd erupted in whispers, but Hao Ming’s steely expression didn’t waver. With one decisive knock of his cane on the floor, the room fell silent. The memory of his ruthless actions against the New Lawson Gangster family lingered in everyone's minds—a stark reminder of his capability to wipe out entire factions and burn their legacies to ashes. Hao Ming ruled the underground world with an iron fist, uniting it under his singular authority. "Take her out of here," he ordered, his voice chillingly cold. Chen Lin complied immediately, dragging Shen Xiuying out of the room despite her protests, leaving Fan Lai on the floor, clutching his broken ribs. Fan Lai looked up at Hao Ming, his eyes filled with desperation. "Brother Ming, what did I do wrong?" he pleaded, wincing with every breath. Hao Ming's gaze bore into him, unyielding and unforgiving. "You dared to act without my approval, undermining the order I have established. You sought power through deceit and extortion, betraying the very principles that hold this organization together." Fan Lai trembled, the weight of his actions crashing down on him. "I only wanted to prove myself, to show that I could lead and contribute more..." Hao Ming’s eyes narrowed. "Leadership is not about imposing fear and exploiting others. It’s about maintaining order and loyalty. You have failed in that regard." Fan Lai’s breath hitched as the severity of his situation dawned on him. The silence in the room was palpable, every eye trained on the unfolding drama. "Please, give me a chance to make amends," he begged, tears streaming down his face. Hao Ming stood, his presence towering over his cousin. "Your actions have consequences, Fan Lai. You will face them, just as anyone else would." As Fan Lai was dragged away, the meeting room remained in stunned silence. Hao Ming’s command was absolute, his authority unquestionable. But just as he thought the situation was under control, his phone buzzed again. This time, the message was more urgent, more threatening. Hao Ming’s eyes darkened as he read the text. An unknown enemy had surfaced, one who knew too much about the inner workings of the Shen family and their operations. The message was clear: “You’ve taken down Fan Lai, but this is far from over. The real game begins now.” A sense of foreboding settled over Hao Ming. He had secured his position for now, but the threat loomed larger than ever. With new enemies emerging from the shadows, the battle for control was far from finished. Hao Ming's grip tightened around his cane, his mind already racing with strategies. He knew that to protect his empire and his beloved wife, he would have to confront this new menace head-on. As he left the meeting room, his thoughts were consumed by the impending conflict. The game had indeed begun, and Hao Ming was prepared to play it to the end, no matter the cost. The stakes were higher than ever, and the future of the Shen family hung in the balance. Hao Ming rushed home, his heart pounding with a mix of urgency and dread. He found Lola awake and sitting on the sofa in the living room, an empty bottle dangling loosely from her hand. The sight of her, drunk and disheveled, stirred a potent blend of emotions within him—guilt, anger, and a fierce protectiveness. Lola looked up as he entered, her eyes glazed and unfocused. She struggled to stand, wobbling slightly before collapsing into his arms. "Where were you?" she slurred, clinging to him tightly. "You weren’t there on our wedding night. You left me alone." Hao Ming's heart clenched at her words. He held her close, feeling the warmth of her body against his. "I’m so sorry, Lola," he whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "I never wanted to leave you. I had to deal with a situation." Lola pushed away slightly, her eyes filled with hurt and confusion. "You always have a situation, Hao Ming. I needed you. I still need you." He gently took the bottle from her hand and set it aside, then cupped her face in his hands, forcing her to meet his gaze. "I’m here now, and I promise I won’t leave you again," he said, his voice steady despite the turmoil inside. Tears welled in Lola’s eyes, and she buried her face in his chest, her sobs muffled. Hao Ming held her tightly, stroking her hair, feeling the weight of his responsibilities and the depth of his love for her. But as they clung to each other, Hao Ming's phone buzzed again. He glanced at the screen, his expression darkening. Another crisis loomed on the horizon, one that threatened to tear them apart once more. He knew he couldn’t ignore it, but how could he protect the woman he loved and keep their world from crumbling?
