Chapter 6

647 Words
By the time Silas, Lila, and the police arrived, Sybil had already been wheeled into the emergency room, the doors slamming shut behind her. "It's her!" Elara jabbed a finger at the nurse restrained by police, then whirled on Lila, voice razor-sharp. "Lila put her up to this! You're terrified Sybil will wake up and blow your cover, so you went for the kill!" Lila's face went ghostly pale. She staggered back two steps, her lip trembling as she threw Silas a look of pure betrayal. "Silas, look at her! She's accusing me out of thin air! How could I ever do something so vile? All I want is for Sybil to wake up!" Silas's brow furrowed, his gaze darting between the two women like a pendulum. Seeing his hesitation, Elara felt a flicker of grim satisfaction. At least this time, he wasn't instantly blaming her like always—no questions, no proof. She was living on borrowed time as it was. If she could expose Lila's lies before dying and make Silas doubt her even a little, that alone was worth it. As police led the nurse away, the three waited outside the ER. The silence was so heavy you could choke on it. Then—a shrill ring shattered the air. Silas's phone. He answered, and within seconds, his face turned the color of ashes. When his head snapped toward Elara, his eyes were pure poison—a blade honed to flay her alive. Ice flooded her veins. Then he moved. His fingers dug into her throat like iron bands, cutting off her air. "Elara." The words scraped out, raw with fury. "The nurse cracked. It was you all along!" "L-Lies!" Elara clawed at his grip, face purpling. "If I'd ordered it, why stop her?" "She got cold feet," he snarled, "so you twisted the knife and framed her!" "Elara, how could you?" Lila's voice quivered as she fake-sobbed, clinging to Silas's arm. "Scared Sybil would name you? So you struck first?" "But dragging me into this? I've begged the gods for Sybil's recovery—why would I harm her?" Revulsion poured off Silas in waves. He flung Elara away like garbage. "Pray to every god you know my mother survives." Elara slammed into the wall, ribs screaming. Gasping against the cold tiles, her throat on fire, it hit her—Lila had set her up. "You scheming witch!" Her nails bit into her palms as she glared at Lila. "You paid that nurse to take the fall for you!" Lila sauntered closer, eyes glinting with triumph. "The nurse sang like a canary. Give it up—you're done." Crack! Elara's restraint finally snapped—her palm flashed out, landing a stinging slap that sent Lila's head jerking sideways with a sharp c***k! Lila dramatically collapsed to the floor, unleashing crocodile tears as she clutched her cheek. "Silas! Look at her—she hurt Sybil, and now she's attacking me!" She wailed, her voice dripping with performance-grade misery. Silas's chest clenched at her fake distress. He dropped to his knees, gathering Lila into a protective embrace, but when his eyes locked onto Elara, his gaze burned with arctic fury. "How dare you touch her?" He snarled. He sprang up, barking a whip-c***k command at the bodyguards. "Lock her in the next room. No one opens that door without my order!" "Silas! By what right?" Elara writhed against their unrelenting vise grip, her voice scorched with fury. "I'm innocent! Lila's the real killer here!" But Silas was blinded by rage, deaf to her pleas. The sterile hospital lights stretched long, suffocating shadows across the walls, thick with despair. Bound to the bed, restraints biting into her wrists like serpents' coils, Elara lay utterly still. Inside, her hope crumbled to ashes. This was her truth—to him, she'd always be the unforgivable demon in his story.
