Chapter 2: The Deal As the night unfolds, I realize that this unexpected alliance with Maverick might be the start of something more than just a revenge plan. But even as I prepare for what’s to come, I can’t shake the feeling that there’s more to Maverick than he’s letting on. He’s a mystery I’m eager to unravel, and for the first time today, I feel like I might actually be able to take control of my life again. Little do I know, this cruise is about to change everything. The next morning, I wake up to the soft sound of the ocean lapping against the side of the ship. The sunlight filters through the thick curtains of my cabin, casting a warm glow across the room. But despite the perfect weather, the peace I should be feeling doesn’t reach me. I still can’t get the image of Richard and Lisa out of my mind. I roll over, pulling the covers tighter around me. I don’t want to think about them, about how happy they seem while I’m stuck in this mess of my own emotions. I have no idea what I’m supposed to do now, but then Maverick’s words from last night echo in my mind. “We could pretend to be a couple. Get him jealous. Show him what he’s losing.” It’s a ridiculous idea. Revenge. I don’t even know why I entertained it. But as the thought lingers, I can’t help but feel a spark of something—something I haven’t felt in a long time. Control. Power. The idea of making Richard regret his betrayal, of showing him that I’m worth more than his lies, appeals to me in a way I can’t ignore. I sit up, glancing out of the window. The sky is impossibly blue, the sea a vibrant shade of turquoise. It feels like paradise. I should be enjoying the view. But all I can think about is getting back at Richard. And for some reason, Maverick seems like the person who could help me do that. I find Maverick at the top deck later that afternoon, exactly where he said he’d be. I hadn’t expected him to be the type to keep his word so easily, but there he is, leaning against the railing, staring out at the horizon like he owns the view. I walk up to him, trying to ignore the fluttering in my chest. It’s ridiculous. This is just a business arrangement. A deal. Nothing more. Maverick turns as he hears my footsteps, and his lips pull into a small, almost predatory smile. “Hey there, Scarlett. You sleep well?” I shrug, offering him a tight smile. “Yeah, sure. Could’ve been better.” His eyes study me, like he’s trying to read between the lines, but I don’t give him anything more. “You decided yet?” he asks, his voice casual but with a hint of curiosity. I take a deep breath. “I’m in.” He raises an eyebrow, as if he didn’t expect me to say it so quickly. “You’re sure about this?” I hesitate for a second. I should second-guess myself, but I don’t. “Yeah. I want to do this.” “Good.” Maverick pushes off the railing, moving closer to me. “So here’s the plan. We’ll make it look like we’re totally in love. Hold hands, kiss, the whole nine yards. I’ll be the perfect guy. And when your ex sees it, we’ll make sure he knows what he’s missing.” I swallow, feeling a twinge of something—a mix of nerves and excitement. “And… what do you get out of this?” I ask, the question slipping out before I can stop it. Maverick’s eyes darken slightly, and he steps closer, his presence making me feel even smaller. “Let’s just say I don’t like cheaters either,” he says, his tone low. “It’s not just about you. It’s about sending a message to anyone who thinks they can play with people’s emotions.” I try not to let his words affect me. After all, we’re in this for different reasons. I want to make Richard regret everything, and Maverick… well, Maverick’s got his own reasons. It doesn’t matter. We have a deal. “Alright,” I say, swallowing the nervousness that threatens to rise. “Let’s do it.” The first day goes by without incident. We spend our time on the ship, getting comfortable with the idea of being together, even though it’s all fake. Maverick’s natural charm makes the whole thing easier than I thought it would be. He’s always one step ahead, always knows how to make people notice him, and his confidence draws attention without even trying. We have dinner together in the main dining hall, sitting in the middle of the room like we’re the center of attention. Maverick’s arm drapes casually around my shoulders as if it’s the most natural thing in the world, and I can’t help but notice how effortlessly he does it. The way people look at us, their curious glances, is almost amusing. I’ve never been the type to draw attention, but here I am, a part of a couple everyone is watching. Richard is sitting a few tables away with Lisa, his gaze flicking between us and back to his meal. He doesn’t say anything, but I can see the frustration in his eyes. The jealousy is there. I smile to myself, feeling a sense of satisfaction building within me. “What’s so funny?” Maverick’s voice pulls me from my thoughts, and I look up to see him studying me. I quickly cover up my smile, playing it off. “Nothing. Just… thinking.” He raises an eyebrow, not buying it, but he doesn’t press. Instead, he leans in closer. “You sure about this? I mean, it’s only been a day, but I’m getting the feeling you’re enjoying this a little more than you thought you would.” I glance at Richard again, the satisfaction still simmering inside me. “Maybe I am,” I admit, the words slipping out without me meaning to say them. “It feels good, you know? Making him see what he lost.” Maverick’s lips curve into a smile, and I swear there’s something dark in his eyes. “That’s the idea,” he says softly. “But remember, we’re not doing this for the fun of it. We have a plan, Scarlett.” I nod, my mind shifting back to the reason we’re here in the first place. I know that this is all part of the game. But still, the thought of watching Richard squirm… it makes the anger bubbling inside me feel a little less sharp. The next few days pass in a blur of carefully orchestrated moments. Maverick and I are inseparable, always together, always in the spotlight. He’s a natural at this, making everything seem real. Every time we kiss, every time he touches my hand or smiles at me, it feels more and more like a real relationship, and I have to remind myself that it’s all just a facade. But it doesn’t stop the feelings from creeping in. One evening, after we’ve spent the day at one of the private beaches on a secluded island, Maverick and I walk along the shore, the golden sunset painting the sky in shades of orange and pink. There’s something romantic about the whole scene, and for a moment, I forget that it’s all a lie. I forget that this isn’t real. “You know, you’re good at this,” I say, glancing over at Maverick, my voice light. He chuckles, the sound smooth and easy. “What, pretending to be your boyfriend?” I nod, biting my lip. “Yeah. You make it look so natural.” Maverick stops walking and turns to face me. There’s a moment of silence before he speaks again, his voice serious. “You know, Scarlett, you don’t have to do this alone. I can help you take down Richard in ways that’ll make him regret ever breathing in your direction.” I look up at him, unsure of what to say. His offer is tempting. Too tempting. The thought of making Richard suffer for what he did, of using Maverick to get revenge—it almost seems too easy. “I don’t know,” I reply, my voice quieter now. “It just feels… complicated.” Maverick steps closer, his face just inches from mine. “Sometimes, the best revenge is complicated,” he says, his voice soft, almost seductive. “But I’m here, Scarlett. I’ve got your back. You’re not in this alone.” I don’t know why, but the intensity in his voice makes my heart beat faster. I can feel the heat between us, the electricity that’s always been there, simmering just below the surface. For a moment, I wonder if this whole thing is getting out of hand. But then I remember Richard and the pain he caused me, and suddenly, it feels like the only thing that matters. “I’m in,” I whisper, my voice barely audible against the crashing waves. Maverick’s eyes darken, his lips curling into a knowing smile. “Good,” he says, his voice low and dangerous. “Let’s make him regret everything.”
