Pete' POV
I spent part of the day with Shelia, we ate together at a decent restaurant. Although she ate restrainedly, I had the feeling that she was hungrier than she expressed. After lunch I suggested to her that we go for a walk, she took me by the arm and followed me. The time I had been in the capital, I had had time to look around. I knew where a market was located, so I took Shelia with me. I chose to give her some new clothes and shoes, so I was sure she had something warm when the winter came. At some of the stalls where food was sold, I bought both fresh vegetables and pickled. I bought salted fish and dried meat. So I knew she had food for a while. I followed her home to her apartment and helped her up with the goods. It was late afternoon and I knew she had to go to work, so I thanked her for the day, and for the fact she had taken the time to talk to me, although she had been reluctant to do so. Shelia smiled shyly and said it had been her pleasure. Then she wrapped her arms around me in a hug, and thanked me for everything I had bought for her. Then she withdrew and quietly closed the door between us. I went down the stairs and out into the backcourt. When I looked up, I could see Shelia hiding by the window frame. I smiled to myself and started walking back to my hotel. My wolf sulked, he was unhappy that I had spent so much time on Shelia. He did not care about her, but did not share the cause with me. I argued that as an upcoming Alpha, it was not wrong of me to help a young wolf in need. He did not contradict that either, he just would rather not spend more time with her. I promised that now, that we had helped her, we would return to our mission, to find a mate.
Well, I was already prepared that finding a suitable mate would be difficult! But I did not expect so many wolves to be hidden among humans. I spent several days looking at humans. It so happened that I noticed someone who was different. I can not explain why just that or that person's body language was different from the others. One day I had wandered into the expensive end of town, where the rich and noble bought what they wanted, not just what they needed. I had seen a young girl get out of a carriage. She got out without holding on to either the carriage or the driver. She stood completely still for a brief moment, then looked around. It wasn’t her actions them self, more the way she did them. I could almost see her wolf sniffing at the surroundings, catching a special scent, maybe a danger or something interesting, and then watching it turn its head to find out where the scent came from. She looked at her driver and said something to him. He nodded, followed her to a*****e. Then he came to me. He stood with his back to me and looked at the cart.
"My lady asked me to tell them that their potion is evaporating." Then he left me abruptly and went back to the store entrance waiting for his Lady, while he kept an eye on the cart. I hurried around the corner, applied more potion before walking past the driver and into the store.
She was sitting on a chair in the middle of the room and was shown hats. Just my luck, I had ended up in a lady's sales room. A dealer immediately rushed to me and inquired about my business. I asked to look at a hat for my sister, who was engaged to Duke Owlery, of the Yellow Moon house. This made the young dealer rush for some hats. But I also noticed that the young woman straightened her back and cast a glance in my direction. I think I saw several dozen hats, and one looked like the other. In the end, I chose one that the retailer called an adorable young girls hat. It was blue with a white ribbon! I couldn’t care less! I chose it and just wanted out of the store. When I had paid and received the hat box, the clerk gave me a small folded note. I took it, went out on the street and walked to the corner before reading it.
I've heard about the engagement, so I suppose you're Pete. I expect to see you for tea at 15 o’clock!
Lady Elisabeth Melbury
I looked at the clock. I had just over four hours to bathe, change clothes and find out where this Lady Melbury lived.
However, I stopped at a men's store in this expensive part of town. Since I was now to attend tea in a Pack house, I had better dress according to custom. I chose a finished set, which with small corrections would be ready early in the afternoon. I found a small restaurant and had an excellent lunch. It was definitely a place for humans, the dishes were small but tasty. I ended up eating both appetizer, two main courses and a dessert. Then I picked up my new clothes, went to my hotel room, were I bathed and dressed. At the reception desk, I asked for a cart that could drive me to Melbury House. That was obviously all that needed to be said, I was not asked for an address, the driver drove me right to the door.
