Chapter 6

1076 Words
Pete's POV Ever since I was a kid, I knew there was no such thing as fated mates, not anymore. Wolves across the country feared being discovered, so instead of searching for the one wolf the Moon Goddess had chosen for one, wolves chose a mate themselves, or sometimes the parents chose one's mate. This was the case with one of my sisters. When she turned fourteen, our Alpha, our father, chose to marry her of to Maxwell. Maxwell is my best friend and he's been so my whole life. Once the time came, we would each take the place of our fathers and become Alphas in each of our Packs. In our time, back then there were several Alphas who were noble, so arranging a marriage was not unheard of, neither for humans nor wolves. But since Miranda was only fourteen, she could not marry Maxwell yet, her wolf was still asleep, so they agreed to wait until she was sixteen, then Maxwell would also have served his duty in the Royal Army. I myself was only seventeen at the time, so I hadn’t thought much about marriage. I spent most of my time training. My father wanted me not only trained as his successor, but also trained as a fighter. I started my days at the training ground with the rest of the pack fighters, as the sun rose. After breakfast, I sat in the office with my father, reviewing paper after paper of official character. In the afternoon, pack members came by with their problems, to get help from their Alpha. Only in the evening did I have time off. I spent that time reading, spending time with the family and sometimes slipping out to see if anything exciting was happening in the village. Then I turned eighteen, something changed, both for me and my wolf! I started to yearn, but I did not know for what! After brooding over it for a little over a week, I told my parents about my anguish. None of them were in doubt, I longed for my mate! Although we no longer nurtured hope of finding our fated mate, we could well long for them. Choosing a mate and becoming a marked wolf removes the longing, but never the thought of what if. I knew the female wolves around us and I had not met anyone I wanted to share my life with. With the blessing of my parents, I traveled the country. A journey of formation we called it, which was very much in vogue among the noble young men. My mother said people did it to run off the horn before settling down and getting married. I had no horn, I am a wolf, I had a longing, and I had to find the one who could satisfy it.   I would set out on my journey from home on horseback. I whit good quality clothes and a strong potion that could hide the fact that I am a wolf. Dogs trained to track down wolfs would not hesitate to attack and kill me. Like so many other wolves, I did not understand why humans were so afraid of us, we never did anything to them! No attack on a human had been recorded for over fifty years when the "war" broke out. Man discovered us and we were hunted wild. They shot first and asked afterwards! But I was safe on my journey, thanks to Maxwell's father, who had provided me with my potion. I still remember the night he brought it over. "Where did you get it from?" my mother grabbed the bottle before I could receive it. The old Alpha from the yellow moon just laughed. "I mean it!" My mother continued "They're getting harder and harder to get hold of!" The old Alpha just nodded, my mother handed him the bottle back. "We can not accept that, it is too expensive a gift!" The always beautiful Luna from Yellow Moon stopped my mother. "Anitha, be sweet now!" She smiled a sad smile "Let's help take care of Pete!" Her husband nodded "We can not have our son lose his best friend, or our daughter-in-law her brother!" Miranda shone like a little sun. And my mother let me have the bottle with me. The morning of my departure, my little sister sneaked in to me, she was now full fifteen and her wolf had woken up. I could immediately see that something was going on with her. I moved over and made room for her in my bed. She cuddled up to me and sighed. "Promise me, big brother, that you're looking for your fated mate!" I laughed quietly, as if! She shaked her head. "No they are still out there!" I looked at her in disbelief. Quietly, she told me her secret. She had met her fated mate. Just a few days after her fifteenth birthday. She described him as a nice guy, strong and intelligent, and very ambitious. I listened speechlessly and was then filled with a strong joy! But she stopped me, she had chosen to reject him. It had hurt, but she had chosen it and did not regret it! I got very angry at her, how could she? Reject her mate, the one chosen by the moon goddess for her! She looked at me seriously. "I had to, I did not love him!" When she saw my surprised face, she continued with a small smile. "I've always loved Max! I can't let him or our parents down!" I nodded, my sister had chosen her duty over her mate. I was not sure I agreed with her, but who was I, who had not felt what it was like to have a mate, fated or chosen, to tell her right from wrong. I swore to her, that I would never mention my knowledge of it to anyone! I left my home, hoping to find a mate who was appropriate for the role of my mate, my Luna, and the mother of my pups. I kissed each of my sisters on the forehead, asking them to take care of themselves. I kissed my mother's cheek and she asked me to take care of myself. My father gave me a warm embrace but said nothing. I mounted the horse and rode away, knowing that they would wait for me once I had found what I was looking for.
