Angels POV He poured himself another cup of tea. "But I have come to the conclusion that it is probably the safest way for a single woman with a small child to travel!" I took a light sigh and nodded. "I'm not quite young anymore, and Jock there, has more energy than I have!" I looked at him wondering. He smiled soothingly at me. "What do you say, that he comes on the travel with you?" I was surprised and sat down, speechless on the chair facing him. He nodded "You will see, he can carry things for you, and then he will protect you and the little one if needed!" I nodded completely numb. Then I could feel a tear rolling, one more and suddenly I slapped my hands over my eyes and cried like a little child. My landlord was completely embarrassed, and tried to reach over and pat me on the shoulder. "There there girl, no reason to pour water out, you can say no thank you!" I shook my head and looked at him through tears, with a small smile I tried to explain myself. "You have already been so kind to us, I had not imagined at all that you could do anything so generous!" he smiled and drank his tea. "You and that little one have in the last day reminded me of many good times in my life, served the best food I've had in a long time and you even baked my wife's scones, just as well as she did ..." he leaned back with a satisfied sigh. "But as you look for your brother, I know you must go on, I want you to take Jock with you, both for his, yours and mine sake!" I looked at him curiously, but did not dare to ask. He got up and went inside to himself, when he returned shortly after, he had a pile of letters in his hand. He laid them on the table and sat down opposite me. "These letters are from my daughter. She and her husband moved north, he was in the army and was sent to the border up there ... When he finished his service, they chose to stay up there. She has written several times since my wife's death and asked me to move up to them. " He shook his head sadly. "But I did not want to intrude, nor did I want to leave my home, our home! I shared it with both my wife and our children. There are many memories here that I could not bear to leave!" I nodded, even though my life had not been filled with good times, I well understood that it could be hard to leave the familiar. "But now the time has come!" he said resolutely, putting both palms down on the table. "Will you help me?" I looked at him incomprehensibly. He smiled "Promise me to take Jock with you!" I nodded eagerly "and help me pack up? Here are many things I do not need when I travel, they must be packed and given away, must be cleared out and cleaned before the Lord gives the house to some new ones!" I nodded, I wanted to help him with everything he asked for! The next few days were spent making everything ready, for the departure of all of us. In the evening I sat and worked on a backpack for Jock. Miles, as my landlord was called, had been right, Jock was a strong young dog, with the right equipment, he could help me carry my stuff. When ten days had passed since my arrival, we were ready! Miles had written to his daughter, had a suitcase with clothes and few personal belongings. I had both Jock's bag and my net filled with food, I had remade some of Miles' wife's clothes, either for myself or for Marvel. The house was clean, most of the furniture and kitchen utensils were still in the house, the Lord had chosen to give the small farm to a newlywed couple, and they did not have much themselves, so our job had been to clean and sort in what was to be included in the acquisition. Miles had sent a large trunk in advance, with all the things he could not have in his suitcase. It was early morning I had just washed up after breakfast when we stood in the courtyard again. Suddenly Miles reached out and took hold of me. I froze at first, but then let myself be embraced. "Thank you sweet girl! You have given me something to live for again!" I gave him a big hug and sniffed a bit. When he let go of the embrace he let his hands stay on my shoulders and looked down at me. "I never think you told me your name!?" I shook my head almost uselessly. "Angel!" I whispered and then there was a deep laugh. I looked up at Miles in confusion. "It goes without saying! Only an angel can make an old man like me come to his senses!" He leaned forward and kissed me on the forehead. "Take care of yourself Angel!" then he let go of me, patted Marvel on the cheek and Jock on the head. "May God be with you!" I nodded and mumbled goodbye. While Miles stood looking after us, the three of us walked off on the country road, heading south.
