What happened to Emma (Part Two)
When Shamrock reached her destination Emma was kept in the captain’s cabin until the ship’s cargo was unloaded. She peered out of the porthole at an azure sea under blinding light. She had no notion of where she might be but it was obviously a tropical climate because the oppressive heat filled the cabin and sweat ran from her armpits even though she was not exerting herself.
Captain Harvey remarked that she needed no clothing so when she eventually stepped on deck, she was naked. Emma had to shield her eyes against the glare and felt the sun beat down on her shoulders. Being so light skinned she knew she would soon be covered in freckles if she stayed in the sun and that her skin would then begin to peel.
