Chapter Fifteen The torture chamber is put to use Edward Mundey searched through Lord Pelton’s papers in the hope of finding more shares or other evidence of income. His lavish spending, including his gaming and visits to whorehouses in London, had seen Pelton’s money frittered away. He toyed with the idea of torturing Pelton to gain knowledge of any monies in secret accounts but he didn’t want the real owner of Colesworth Hall to know what a spendthrift he’d been. Spending other people’s money was a pleasant pastime but in time the money ran out. As he trawled through the tin boxes extracted from the safe, Edward came upon the draft of an unfinished manuscript in Pelton’s handwriting entitled Rule of the Rod accompanied by correspondence with a publisher.
