Chapter Nine Count Maximilian, Mesmerist and Illusionist Mrs. Wallace watched the way Agatha Giggs prospered with growing resentment. She felt her position as the most powerful woman below stairs had long been usurped though in truth Giggs’s influence seemed to pervade the whole house, upstairs and downstairs. Edward seemed content with this state of affairs and she no longer thought of complaining to him, fearing that he would side with Giggs. It was worse than that. Margaret Wallace heard stories from one servant after another about fearsome punishments and s****l abuses perpetrated by both of them, sometimes acting singly and sometimes together.
