The pain of each footstep is annoying. Once one experiences the fiery application of the cane… and daily; agony becomes a relative thing. Walking is more mentally aggravating than physically for the slight annoyance brings the vision of the wicked Bai slowly and methodically tapping away with her short length of rattan. And in not being able to control the vision, to put her unmerciful image out of my mind, the long term effects of bastinado are more psychological than physical. And of course what heightens the torment is realizing that that is what is intended, that I forever think of my torturer, each footstep serving as a reminder.
